E51 The E51 Catalytic Converter Problem

I'm in the process of getting hold of a E52, 3.5L which will be converted to dual fuel/ LPG. The cats will not have been de-cored (as far as I'm aware) so intend to get this done asap - or another workaround. I intend to run it on LPG as much as possible, but clearly this won't always be possible. Have heard about replacing the whole exhaust system and also a mention of 'bolt on kits', but not sure what these are? Anyone know? I appreciate that cats are an ongoing topic! Thanks.

Hi The dealer where I bought my E51 From wrote on the invoice De Cat & wax oil. I can see the wax oil. I can see the secondary Cats but they don’t look as though they have been touched at all. I have been to an Elgrand specialist who is recommending I have the front Cats de cored for which he wants to relieve me of £500.00. Is there anyway that
1. I can check that the supplying dealer DID actually decore the secondary Cats. & 2 once done, check that the primary cats have been decored. Being a Newbie I would be very grateful for any advise please.
Thank You
M

the decore would have been done from the top so under the heat shield you can check to see if the nuts have been undone or give them a tap if they sound hollow they have been done compare with the fronts which may sound full /dull or take the exhaust of and have a look

ps the fronts will not be done unless on lpg as it would fail mot

The importer that I'm using have said that they don't decore cats for their customers as it's not necessary. They say they've imported thousands and none of them ever went wrong. They claim these only fail when people don't use/service car probably by exceeding 6k mile period for oil changes and not using RON 97 fuel. Unfortunately they also said that if I decore the cats or convert to LPG I will lose the warranty, which is only 3 months.
Now whilst I am planning to only use 98-99 fuel, I'm not willing to risk by leaving cats alone. I'm planning to decore them anyway, but thinking if I probably should wait those 3 months to keep the warranty. How quickly do these disintegrate?
Also is it better to do front or rear cats? Read that even if rears are removed it might still happen

You should walk no RUN from an importer that say that they don't decore cats for their customers as it's not necessary

non refundable deposit already given and I'm now waiting for it to be registered. Think it's ok as long as I do it myself?

They do underseal it however, waxoyl. Tyres are japanese and I could already see that they're cracking, probably very old

And also ask if they have done one of these if not do one yourself.

Knock them down on the price or get them to fit new

Nice, thank you
And regarding the mileage they said they do have export document that they'll share as well as service history from japan
I will request them to provide me with the chassis number to check on carvx to confirm the mileage

Do you know how reliable usually the export document is with mileage?

I don't know mate as Mine was a second owner in the uk

They say they've imported thousands and none of them ever went wrong.
That logic is a load of bullsh1t! How many people go back to the dealer if they get a problem after the warranty has run out? And have they kept in touch with the "thousands" of people they've sold elgrands to? Can they honestly say "none of them have ever gone wrong"? That really is nonsensical!
Get the cats sorted. The evidence on here is much more reliable. If something goes wrong including cat failure in the first 3 months you'll be covered by the warranty so you might want to wait but don't leave it much longer for peace of mind.

When I was looking to buy mine a place that imports them in Middlesbrough said exactly the same thing. Went to vine instead.

Yep my plan was to sort them, but I wasn't sure if it's best waiting 3mo or just do it outright. Who knows if their 3 month warranty is actually worth the paper it's written on. If it drives ok for few weeks I probably will do it straight away.
I have a dilemma though as I don't know which cats I should do. Rear ones are easiest, but they don't eliminate the problem fully it seems. Are fronts doable on the drive? Is there a guide?

Looking at an E51 camper - cats not done previously so the 'quick option' to decore rear cats seems sensible as an ASAP fix with then some thought into longer term solutions.

Great information regardless of the poky banter. It was highly enlightening about the CAT quad system. I’ve bought an E51 2004 and the Seller, a Nissan Elgrand importer, is removing the rear CATS for me before I pick it up from him. As a newbie this conversation thread has been really informative. Thanks for all contributors. 🥳
