Overcoming Social Anxiety and getting to a meet

I always stress over little details when not in my comfort zone, particularly when meeting new people. Once I get comfortable I always end up kicking myself about getting anxious in the 1st place.

I don't know whether it's social anxiety or just a fear of not being welcomed.

As a kid I had a thing about counting everything.. Tiles on the roof, number of metal bars on the front of the electric fire (I still remember it was 23 lol) and 6 divisions / cubby holes at the side of the fire. But not only that, I'd also play about with the numbers, like the ratio of tiles on one row to other rows, like thinking of a random number and seeing how quickly I could work out which cubby hole that number would land on if I went top left, top right, same on middle row and bottom row (which is obviously just X mod 6)... unless you do the rows/columns in a different order lol. I'm still fascinated with maths and mathematical constants (of which of course Pi is the most well known). My mum said I used to talk in my sleep, like playing chess with myself while asleep, mentally projecting complex design in progress circuit diagrams onto my bedroom curtains... and sometimes wake up next morning having somehow solved a design question in my sleep. Me and friends used to jump over the shadows of cars (while on the causeway) as they passed on our walk to school (not just jump, more a matter of the shadow not passing you while your feet were on the floor so instead of jumping you might lean on top of a wall etc)... I remember once doing it while I was walking alone, laughing at myself for feeling the need to it while alone (so not even playing the 'game' with mates), never did it again after that lol.. But I still hardly ever switch off, always thinking even in bed. If it's not work related it could be thinking about a design for a variable compression engine, methane powered gun, an electric circuit design, or might just be contemplating space/time, dark matter/energy, black holes etc lol.
Oh, I do the counting thing.
Maybe I am worse than I thought. 👀

The most annoying ocd trait for me is when I lock the door and know I've locked it then go out and have to turn back round and check again not all the time just when it's particularly bad that day I'm mostly satisfied with my excessive door checking :joy:

Get rid of all the stress and strain etc by reminding yourselves it could be worse - you might have had a transporter.

Ever tried to ween yourself off doing it? I'd just think I'm pretty sure I locked it (like 90%), what are the odds an opportunist is going to try the door on perhaps the 10% of times I forgot to lock it and be more likely to burgle if the door is unlocked than they would be if they'd come equipped to break the lock. Or print a check list off and write down the date/time everytime I locked/unlocked the door in the hope that would eventually ween me off having to re-check.

One weird trait I have is remembering number plates of cars that I own as well as some family and friends.

My cars in order of ownership:

1. Mini, THK570N
2. Escort HHK344Y
3. Range Rover DJI 7112 / WDV 942S
4. Range Rover C416 LBD
5. Freelander YB04 XOA
6. Range Rover L714 KSS
7. Freelander SO53WYB / NO51 ANH
8. Elgrand NO51 ANH - can't remember original as I transferred my plate pretty soon after I got it.

My Parents cars:

1. Cortina TDN722H / TDN 772H - it accidentally carried both for a while - think the first was the correct one..
2. Maxi SVY346N
3. Astra AUM828X
4 Maestro H103TNP
5 Astra H161 WCA
6 Yaris - can't actually remember that one.

Others:

Best friends first car (concurrent with my mini) Fiesta, LMM537W
Church minibus which my Dad drove regularly D898PVX

Can't really remember any others, those are just off the top of my head. What surprises me is that in most other respects my memory is pretty crap.

Yes I'm a lot better than I used to be but I do overly check I haven't had to go back and check for a while it all depends how the anxiety is that day

I used to memorise the chassis numbers of my vehicles but don't do that any more as it it just encourages similar behaviour.

I can remember multiple phone numbers from being a kid, postcodes too. My dad's Sierra was G966 DFY....

...can I remember my pin number??
How do I go and forget my pin number in a huge queue when it decided not to accept contactless "for my protection"?! 😡

Hi! Just to let you know I am still about! Just one of those years I decided to abandon due to family, finance, ferkin work and general shyte! Hopefully back on form next year and getting to those fantastic meets where it feels like family...😆

Dad's 1303S Beetle - KRD917L, my first car JCC499H, house I first lived for six weeks - 31 Ruskin Street. Current record for going to shop for milk and not getting any? 4 days 🤣 🤣

I now make a ten mile round trip almost every other day because I can't remember if I locked the door or set the alarm at work. Every time (up to now) I have. At current fuel prices my dementia is costing me a fiver in E5 every time 🤣 :(

Keith make notes, either on a device or good old pen and paper.

Kermit, you won't believe how many shopping lists I lose. Being serious (for once!) I am genuinely concerned about my short term memory, it's getting ridiculous. We committed mum to a home last year as she is now full blown Alzheimer's. Does make you wonder......

Ah ok, have you been to the Dr? You could do with some blood tests, you could just have a deficiency. Best to check. Dr will even give you a quick dementia test whilst you are there.

Simon, whilst clearly nowhere near as intelligent as you, I came up with the idea of an ignition coil per spark plug one morning, wind turbines down central reservations generating electricity and several other fanciful schemes. First time I've ever mentioned it publicly as no bugger will believe me.....

@Kermit have you tried to get an appointment in these post-covid times? 🤣
