I didn't, however I've been through insuring an Elgrand only once - recently..I've been told that my E51 needs a Cat 1 Thatcham installed with certification for it to be covered for theft.
Has anyone else experienced this ?

WHen I look at the text in my post above it's not what I was linking to. Not sure what has gone wrong. If you have a look at posts 155/156 in this thread you will see what I wrote back in December.Yes but I managed to get around the issue. Post is here.
Insuring your Elgrand
Sorry as a newbie have not got the hang of this forum yet! :) There's so much info on here but sometimes is very difficult to track down what you want even for those of us who've been around for a while! Glad you've found it. Shouldn't cause an issue not having it registered as a motorhome...forum.elgrandoc.uk
When you click on to the link it takes you through to your post 156 so all good.WHen I look at the text in my post above it's not what I was linking to. Not sure what has gone wrong. If you have a look at posts 155/156 in this thread you will see what I wrote back in December.
I have just got into Elgrand ownership, I have managed to get it insured quite easily and competitively with admiral insurance on a multicar policy.Insurance is always a hot topic of conversation, especially when it comes to Japanese Imports.
As a general rule of thumb, there should be no real "premiums" for insuring the Elgrand over any other vehicle in it's class. The problem you may find is that insurance databases are not always as up to date as they should be when it comes to imports.
Typically, you want to be going for a Japanese Import Specialist insurer. These are usually the best in terms of keeping up to date with import vehicles on their database. They will also, USUALLY, be the most competitive.
Do NOT bother wasting time with comparison sites for your Elgrand... they will throw up ridiculous quotes and just be a waste of your time. Go to insurance companies directly.
My general advice to anyone who asks is to follow the below:
Contact Adrian Flux. Give them all your details and get a quote - I would not recommend taking a policy out with Flux due to the level of complaints I have seen/heard from people in the event of a claim. But, this is just hearsay really, so it's up to you if you choose to insure with them.
Ring Sky Insurance, give them all your details and the quote you got from Flux, they will, most of the time, beat it.
Ring GreenLight Insurance (our Insurance partner), give them your details, give them your cheapest quote, and then tell them you are a member of ElgrandOC to get your 15% discount. If they cannot beat the quote from Sky, go with them.
There are a lot of members who are more than happy, or have had their best quotes from some of the normal, big name insurance companies such as Direct Line, Admiral, Aviva etc. So if you really want to get a comparison across the board, ring some known insurance companies too and see if they can be competitive or not. But I would advise you ring the three Jap Import Specialist insurers listed above first, and then go to the big known insurance companies.
There is a whole different routine you will have to take to insure a FRESH IMPORT that has NOT BEEN REGISTERED. You need to insure on the Chassis number etc, and things are more complicated overall... so if you are looking at insuring an Elgrand off the boat to get in home for MOT etc, then please check in the "Import Experiences" forum section to see what others have done.
Hope this helps.
I think age, location, parking arrangements etc all affect price. I went through Adrian Flux because they offer an alteration policy where you can make changes to the vehicle without affecting premium, for example we are getting a full Northstar conversion done, and then can send photos to get guranteed value.Just searching for insurance for a 2011 E52, 6k mile pa, 9+ncb - Santander highest so far with 1200, direct line lowest with 480!
Legend, tried the usual compare sights before checking here, and you are right, they just charge silly, looks like going through greenlight, mentioned elgrandoc and the representative straight away knew it. So far the best price.Insurance is always a hot topic of conversation, especially when it comes to Japanese Imports.

Just for info!i tried greenlight right now and they politely declined to offer me any insurance, apparently my standard e52 wasnt modified and hence they couldnt help.... might need to rethink my purchase , struggling to find decent car insurance...
what qulaifies as a mod? i may have been confused as this is my first e52 purchaseJust for info!
You don’t need loads of mods for green light to insure you , just a couple of little things will normally do
