Insuring your Elgrand

Even aftermarket alloys are considered mods, stainless exhaust, led lights etc

Thanks, worth ringing them again then? Cause there are defo 20 inch rims on there

Before buying my e51 I had insurance on my other jap import, a Toyota Caldina gt4. Most comparison websites couldn't find it based on reg and the manual searches also wouldn't find it.
Ended up spending hours calling specialists and ended up with a company called AIB insurance and took insurance out at £250 on the nose. It seemed to be less 'algorithm' generated and more of a personal calculated approach.

Fellow import owners worth giving AIB a look if you're struggling.

thanks, in the end rang up my existing car insurance admiral and asked them to quote me if i was to change the vehicle to an Elgrand, was a £0 change.. any happy with that as i am paying (£463 for fully comp, especially since i was getting quoted between £700-1200 elsewhere..

I spent some time today looking at the Thatcham site and trawled through this forum looking at old posts in this thread and some other threads and have managed to work out that the factory fitted Nissan Anti Theft System (NATS) in the E51 is the same as the one in in Nissan Micra which qualifies as a Thatcham Cat 2 system. The main difference between Cat 2 and Cat 1 seems to be the addition of an alarm to an already installed immobiliser. Some companies will sell a kit for that.
Armed with this information I phoned Greenlight to ask if the addition of an alarm to what I already have would satisfy the need for a Cat 1 system. The chap I spoke to today said that it's the immobiliser that they are really interested in and that an alarm wouldn't really be needed, I asked him if he was sure so he went silent to confirm with a colleague. This colleague has an imported 370Z which has the same immobiliser and they definitely accept it without need for additional work. All I need to do is provide proof that it's fitted and working.
Digging up an old one here but I’m in the same situation. How did you provide proof?

If I remember correctly I got Vine Place, the importer and converter, to write either a letter or a note on some paperwork that NATS was fitted and working.
I've just taken ownership of an Elgrand Rider which is one year older than the Elgrand HWS I was writing about last year and have insured it through Greenlight as well and the subject of an immobiliser or alarm never came up. The renewal of the HWS went through them as well last month. All 3 policies are through the same underwriter which is Highway Insurance who are part of LV.

Edit: Greenlight have a web portal to upload documents through.

Hi!
I'm trying to get all the information I can before taking the plunge... Insuring an Elgrand seems like a mine field!! 🥴

I have tried a couple of places and they're asking questions I am struggling to answer... Found the NATS answer in this thread (thank you)

Couple of questions... Is a conversion classed as a Car or Van ?
Is a Camper Conversion a 'Modification'?
How would I find out the BHP?

Failing that... Does anyone have a rough idea of annual insurance premium for such a vehicle 🙏

Any info welcome!
Thanks

@Zara
  • DVLA classes my camper as an MPV & PLG on the V5c.
  • My camper is insured fully comp with Greenlight Insurance Services Limited for £369.35 (they give a discount to club members - see Partner Site Links). A camper conversion is a modification as is LPG conversion. I have 9+ years no claims bonus, off road parking, don't commute to work, and I went for a limited mileage of 6000 a year on an insured value of £24k. I also live in a NE post code area not an SR one which makes it cheaper for me :)
  • I believe my engine should be in the range of 185-210 BHP but I have never had that tested.

@Leontgiscombe going through some paperwork today I saw that I got Vine Place to write a note on the sale paperwork regarding the NATS being in working order.

Awesome, thanks for that 🙌

found Adrian flux to be the cheapest and best for most of my jdm cars

Weren't the cheapest for me, I went with Greenlight in the second year, looking around for year 3 now.
Insurance prices have so many variables based on lots of factors, very difficult to find like for like pricing with other owners

This is great, thanks. I've looked at a comparison site and as our Elgrand has been over here since 2010 the quotes were more or less what I was expecting, about £400 with 3 years NCB (second car) and a claim a few years back (don't ask). Is it worth ringing around, I'm thinking I'm unlikely to get much lower than that? Cheers!

Hi all,
Just insured my Elgrand through Jap Cover.
Worth mentioning as for myself and the missus, compehensive cover just over £400

£254...multi policy with Admiral.:)

COVER
Elgrand Nissan
Reg no: H7---
£254.49

Been quoted £350 from Churchill, or £399 from Greenlight who i'll probably go with as they understand the vehicle and its inclusive of any modifications that may be done to the car, ie alloys etc

Wow, that's cheap...shit 🤔 :D

I had to call all but i was routed to brentacre and they found a solution for me.

Just Got my van insured last week with Admiral. Worked out about £50 cheaper to get house contents insurance and van insurance together rather than just the van insurance 🤔😂🥰

I have Admiral Multi Cover and they quoted a great price including home, car and the Elgrand ... However as it's a camper converted van their policy doesn't cover any modifications.

I went with Green Light in the end for around £700 😳 for the year (due to only 3yrs private No Claims, since always been a named driver in the past 🤦‍♀️)

If anyone is interested this is my first Elgrand and a bit of back and forth and I got a decent quote from Darwin insurance!
