Insuring your Elgrand

Insurance is always a hot topic of conversation, especially when it comes to Japanese Imports.

As a general rule of thumb, there should be no real "premiums" for insuring the Elgrand over any other vehicle in it's class. The problem you may find is that insurance databases are not always as up to date as they should be when it comes to imports.

Typically, you want to be going for a Japanese Import Specialist insurer. These are usually the best in terms of keeping up to date with import vehicles on their database. They will also, USUALLY, be the most competitive.

Do NOT bother wasting time with comparison sites for your Elgrand... they will throw up ridiculous quotes and just be a waste of your time. Go to insurance companies directly.

My general advice to anyone who asks is to follow the below:

Contact Adrian Flux. Give them all your details and get a quote - I would not recommend taking a policy out with Flux due to the level of complaints I have seen/heard from people in the event of a claim. But, this is just hearsay really, so it's up to you if you choose to insure with them.

Ring Sky Insurance, give them all your details and the quote you got from Flux, they will, most of the time, beat it.

Ring GreenLight Insurance (our Insurance partner), give them your details, give them your cheapest quote, and then tell them you are a member of ElgrandOC to get your 15% discount. If they cannot beat the quote from Sky, go with them.

There are a lot of members who are more than happy, or have had their best quotes from some of the normal, big name insurance companies such as Direct Line, Admiral, Aviva etc. So if you really want to get a comparison across the board, ring some known insurance companies too and see if they can be competitive or not. But I would advise you ring the three Jap Import Specialist insurers listed above first, and then go to the big known insurance companies.

There is a whole different routine you will have to take to insure a FRESH IMPORT that has NOT BEEN REGISTERED. You need to insure on the Chassis number etc, and things are more complicated overall... so if you are looking at insuring an Elgrand off the boat to get in home for MOT etc, then please check in the "Import Experiences" forum section to see what others have done.

Hope this helps.
I've been reading with great interest on thus forum regarding insurance and the grey area regarding towing in the UK. Has anyone had insurance refused on the basis of adding a towbar?

I had a neighbour literally go bald dealing with them after an accident.

I’ve insured my S15 with flux for a few years now due to their competitive price, but I have also heard from another S15 owner who worked for Flux that they can be a right pita to deal with if you actually need to put a claim in.

I think that's the essence of what makes a good company- how do they handle it when things go wrong. Same deal with a dealership; car garage; returning clothes; returning anything really.
I find companies are pretty good at being good when you're giving them money.

Best quote I got as a second car with no NCD available (its on my other car) is £608 for the year with Admiral. Certainly more than I wanted but better than the £3500 with my current provider.

Mine is an E51 Series 3 converted to campervan.
I got my insurance through Caravan Guard for £390 which seemed OK.
Thanks so much for this, just got our insurance through Caravan Guard, saved us about £700 compared to Adrian Flux for the exact same cover!

www.ers.com got insured on the E51 Highway Star 8 seater for under £600 with combe of Buis/Social usage which was well over £200 cheaper than the comparison sites best deals.

Thank you so much for this. I got our Elgrand yesterday evening and wish I had read this before I got insurance. I did everything you said not to - straight onto comparison site! Next year i will be following your guidance

Hi.
I just been quoted by Flux £3100 and finally £2740 for extensive insurance (the only one available they said) for a e52 2.5l 2011…

I kind of agree with that. However, going by what some 'fresh Elgranders' have been quoted, I'm finding Admiral- via a comparion site- at ~ £620 with breakdown cover, on a 2nd car, hence with 0 no claims, is in the same ball park. I wondering how much less will I really get it for if I spend 11 hours on the phone giving my details to place after place? And jap car cover, for eg, I can't find any reviews for online, so I'm totally blind as to what they'd be like in the unfortunate event of a claim, even if they beat Admiral's comparison site price.

I previously called Admiral and they couldn’t find my car model in their data base and they will revert with a personalized (to be read << expensive >>) in 3-5 days.
I did try to find insurance on Gocompare, but the same situation - I couldn’t find my model.

I have bought yesterday my e52 and the “dealer” recommended japcar, too.

I think you have the 14 days “cooling off” option.

I used moneysupermarket's algorithm, and Elgrand is on the scroll down list. Admiral was coming up top of the list. I couldn't see an issue if I then pressed play and bought online.

I just tried. The newest option is 2010 and my car is 2011.

That's a pain. That must explain why it worked for me, but you've hit a blank- when I did it y'day I put a 59 plate in, which is the age of the one I'm getting.

I bought Japcover insurance at £1130 with £400 excess. Maybe I will be luckier next year.
Sounds a lot. Is it because it's an E52, and like you said a bit harder with databases, or (if you dn't mind me asking) got any major things with hinder the price: prior claims; 'being young'; additional drivers with similar; lots of points etc etc?

Just 3 years no claim bonus (haven’t drive in UK before), 3 points for speeding, 29 years driving license, no other driver on the insurance. The thing is that they virtually have no competition, due of lack of date base.
