Insuring your Elgrand

Hi everyone,

I'm due to pick up my vehicle in a weeks time. Spent most of this afternoon on hold and got one quote from Direct Line for £945…. Ouch.

I'm getting the 2008 3.5 litre E51 Elgrand. Does anyone have a rough idea what I should be paying or does that figure sound about right?

Cheers,

Scott

Does sound a lot but insurance has got literally an infinite number of variables which affect the premium.

I spent yesterday trawling insurance companies for my 2005 E51. WOW what an experience that was, Direct Line, Privilege no longer offer cover for imports. Specialist companies came up with £661 to £700 for Driver plus 1 named, 50 years experience, max no claims, 1 speeding fine plus 3 points and £500 excess, I added no claims protection and excess protection just in case! I ended up with Flux as I had dealt with them before.

Don't yet own one myself but the best I could get was just under £600 from the ones others get £300 from. I'm an hgv driver, 18yr NCB 1 SP30 (3pts), full car licence 28yr bike for 36yr, C+E 16 months , D 6 yr.
Apparently as a professional driver the quotes are higher because your more likely to be involved in an accident. A bit stupid given an accident in my lorry has nothing to do with my car insurance. But a high flying corporate monkey having business meetings and liquid lunches etc will pay a pittance.

Hey guys and girls,
I m an old git 65 plus , I pay with. L&V. about £450 for 3.5 V6 ,16 years old . Drives like a dream!. Last year I put my 4 kids and partners on the policy , they’re about 35 ish. I was bracing myself for a top up.
Unbelievably the operative said , where can I send the REFUND,
I got £20 back. They said more drivers less risk———#@£&£#@& !
Can you understand that?
Dave

Is the LV a renew? I ask as they aren't insuring imports anymore, but will honor ones already with a policy.

There's always the old Martin Lewis trick of getting quotes approximately 23 days before the renewal date when apparently quotes are lowest. Comparison websites save a lot of time and there's always the option of then trying the lowest quoter direct.

i hate to be cynical but each driver now has the ability to lose YOUR no claims bonus for you if there is an accident.your no claimssaving comes to much more per year than £20, so it’s a gamble the insurance company happily takes. See if your NCB is protected if the others have an accident in your van.

Insurance is always a hot topic of conversation, especially when it comes to Japanese Imports.

As a general rule of thumb, there should be no real "premiums" for insuring the Elgrand over any other vehicle in it's class. The problem you may find is that insurance databases are not always as up to date as they should be when it comes to imports.

Typically, you want to be going for a Japanese Import Specialist insurer. These are usually the best in terms of keeping up to date with import vehicles on their database. They will also, USUALLY, be the most competitive.

Do NOT bother wasting time with comparison sites for your Elgrand... they will throw up ridiculous quotes and just be a waste of your time. Go to insurance companies directly.

My general advice to anyone who asks is to follow the below:

Contact Adrian Flux. Give them all your details and get a quote - I would not recommend taking a policy out with Flux due to the level of complaints I have seen/heard from people in the event of a claim. But, this is just hearsay really, so it's up to you if you choose to insure with them.

Ring Sky Insurance, give them all your details and the quote you got from Flux, they will, most of the time, beat it.

Ring GreenLight Insurance (our Insurance partner), give them your details, give them your cheapest quote, and then tell them you are a member of ElgrandOC to get your 15% discount. If they cannot beat the quote from Sky, go with them.

There are a lot of members who are more than happy, or have had their best quotes from some of the normal, big name insurance companies such as Direct Line, Admiral, Aviva etc. So if you really want to get a comparison across the board, ring some known insurance companies too and see if they can be competitive or not. But I would advise you ring the three Jap Import Specialist insurers listed above first, and then go to the big known insurance companies.

There is a whole different routine you will have to take to insure a FRESH IMPORT that has NOT BEEN REGISTERED. You need to insure on the Chassis number etc, and things are more complicated overall... so if you are looking at insuring an Elgrand off the boat to get in home for MOT etc, then please check in the "Import Experiences" forum section to see what others have done.

Hope this helps.

I always used jap cover cabt fault them tbh

I always thought the Elgrand has been very reasonable to insure, the first time it has been over £300 has been this year (and thats on 5000 miles per year and i took business use off) with the insurance increases. However, that was with 19 years no claims. Starting researching getting a cabrio for the summer so been looking at quotes without any no claims (as it's on the Elgrand) and actually been very surprised, thought they would be much more. With a variety of bargain price potential summer fun cars (volvo c70, bmw 3 series 3L, merc e class v6, saab 9-3T) on 12k miles per year and business use all come back between £350 and £500, which seems very doable. I do wonder how much thr Elgrand would actually cost me without all the no claims discount!!

Renewed my insurance last week through Greenlight, there was a bit of a hike this year but they still provided the cheapest quote.

£354.52 for a 2006 Rider. Jan 2024
£269.35 for a 2006 Rider. Jan 2023
£369.35 for a 2007 HWS Camper conversion. Dec 2022

Both converted to run on LPG with annual mileage limited to 6000 miles and with a full NCD.

Mine, Admiral: 0 no claims (on another car); 0 points (for now, in 20mph Wales o_O); 40s; 5K miles; no commuting; parked on drive; own another car; additional driver (Mrs); legal cover. £525ish. But that's with full breakdown cover, which was about a £90 add on.

I m not sure what your point is here? Are you saying they are gambling that we have a crash lose our NCB and pay more next year???
What about the £2-3000 they may lay out in repairs ( or more) !

Just got a quote for fully comp £337.80 from Churchill
Currently insured with LV. LV now say they will not insure imports (for new policies or change of vehicle). Phoned Churchill who said they will not insure imports! Admiral very helpful, policy would be slightly more than I am currently paying with LV (£615.31). Have been recommended "Mark Richards" an insurance broker. Seems that age limits options to one company (£972.11). All based on husband & wife driving, South London location, 9 years plus NCB, 5,000 miles per year and car kept overnight in garage.
