Mines an 8 seater and they have insured me for over 4 years....A few on here are with direct line . But they wouldnt insure me because they said they don't do 8 seaters
I doubt it, the problem is that no insurers really understand imported cars and the call centre staff literally just make up crap as they go. It's just an excuse because they either don't want you for some reason, or they have entered something wrong. I had exactly the same crap excuse from an import specialist (Adrian flux) when they wanted £3k to insure me. Direct line probably insures more Elgrands than any other company in the UK, and for me charged a tenth the price AF wanted. Nearly every Elgrand has 8 seats (XLs are a minority of cars).I can only imagine they won't take on new customers , but are honering your deal as an existing customer .
Take out the little middle seat , you now have a 7 seater.A few on here are with direct line . But they wouldnt insure me because they said they don't do 8 seaters
Hello Darren I've had the same problem with both Direct Line and LV. Both have said that the way they are insuring JDM cars has just recently changed. Before they would go through underwriters, but apparently if the model of the car is not on their current list then they cannot now insure you. I was with LV and wanted to change over, but my latest car was not on the current list so no insurance. Went through Green Light eventually and got insured there no problem. They were also very helpful.A few on here are with direct line . But they wouldnt insure me because they said they don't do 8 seaters
+1 for AdmiralOurs is on Admiral Multicar, and is less than £200 now, and that is an outer London postcode, no garage. We got house and contents added, and it really made a difference.
I was told the same about NCD, apparently they will only allow it to be applied to one vehicle. Shopping around is your best option for getting a cheaper policy. I got reasonable quotes from Adrian Flux, Just Kampers and Greenlight. I didn't try for any of the multicar policies as I had no intention of running two cars.I have a big problem. Just heard that I can't use my no claim discount for a second car as registered owner, and to me this is novelty, as I've never had to enquire until now. Is it just my insurance company, or it goes across the globe? To me it is just nonsense..
It's confusing, as when insuring the Elgrand with a different company than my existing one of the other car they asked me if I have another vehicle to which I said yes, and got a quote for shy of £900, for 37yo and 9+ ncd; after reading the posts above and seeing how little you guys pay, I got looking to change insurer, but seems like I'm allowed to have two cars if I pay for the second one insurance premium with no ncd, explaining I can use my ncd for just one car. Is this common?
Unfortunately that's right. One ncd for one car. Some companies will give you an introductory bonus though. You need to shop around.I have a big problem. Just got a policy with greenlight. Under £600, I'm happy with that for the moment ty folks. I'm on the road againI was told the same about NCD, apparently they will only allow it to be applied to one vehicle. Shopping around is your best option for getting a cheaper policy. Aarrgh! Wish I had joined the Owners Club before I took out insurance with Adrian Flux! Ah well, there's always next year........ Thanks for the info KarlInsurance is always a hot topic of conversation, especially when it comes to Japanese Imports.
As a general rule of thumb, there should be no real "premiums" for insuring the Elgrand over any other vehicle in it's class. The problem you may find is that insurance databases are not always as up to date as they should be when it comes to imports.
Typically, you want to be going for a Japanese Import Specialist insurer. These are usually the best in terms of keeping up to date with import vehicles on their database. They will also, USUALLY, be the most competitive.
Do NOT bother wasting time with comparison sites for your Elgrand... they will throw up ridiculous quotes and just be a waste of your time. Go to insurance companies directly.
My general advice to anyone who asks is to follow the below:
Contact Adrian Flux. Give them all your details and get a quote - I would not recommend taking a policy out with Flux due to the level of complaints I have seen/heard from people in the event of a claim. But, this is just hearsay really, so it's up to you if you choose to insure with them.
Ring Sky Insurance, give them all your details and the quote you got from Flux, they will, most of the time, beat it.
Ring GreenLight Insurance (our Insurance partner), give them your details, give them your cheapest quote, and then tell them you are a member of ElgrandOC to get your 15% discount. If they cannot beat the quote from Sky, go with them.
There are a lot of members who are more than happy, or have had their best quotes from some of the normal, big name insurance companies such as Direct Line, Admiral, Aviva etc. So if you really want to get a comparison across the board, ring some known insurance companies too and see if they can be competitive or not. But I would advise you ring the three Jap Import Specialist insurers listed above first, and then go to the big known insurance companies.
There is a whole different routine you will have to take to insure a FRESH IMPORT that has NOT BEEN REGISTERED. You need to insure on the Chassis number etc, and things are more complicated overall... so if you are looking at insuring an Elgrand off the boat to get in home for MOT etc, then please check in the "Import Experiences" forum section to see what others have done.
Hope this helps.
