Insuring your Elgrand

Just searching for insurance for a 2011 E52, 6k mile pa, 9+ncb - Santander highest so far with 1200, direct line lowest with 480!

I've been told that my E51 needs a Cat 1 Thatcham installed with certification for it to be covered for theft.
Has anyone else experienced this ?

I didn't, however I've been through insuring an Elgrand only once - recently..

WHen I look at the text in my post above it's not what I was linking to. Not sure what has gone wrong. If you have a look at posts 155/156 in this thread you will see what I wrote back in December.

When you click on to the link it takes you through to your post 156 so all good.
I've noticed this before. When you insert a link it always seems to display the first post of the thread.

Direct Line seem to be smashing everyone out of the water this year for Nissan Elgrand insurance. I've gone with them this year. Cheapest by far

Insurance is always a hot topic of conversation, especially when it comes to Japanese Imports.

As a general rule of thumb, there should be no real "premiums" for insuring the Elgrand over any other vehicle in it's class. The problem you may find is that insurance databases are not always as up to date as they should be when it comes to imports.

Typically, you want to be going for a Japanese Import Specialist insurer. These are usually the best in terms of keeping up to date with import vehicles on their database. They will also, USUALLY, be the most competitive.

Do NOT bother wasting time with comparison sites for your Elgrand... they will throw up ridiculous quotes and just be a waste of your time. Go to insurance companies directly.

My general advice to anyone who asks is to follow the below:

Contact Adrian Flux. Give them all your details and get a quote - I would not recommend taking a policy out with Flux due to the level of complaints I have seen/heard from people in the event of a claim. But, this is just hearsay really, so it's up to you if you choose to insure with them.

Ring Sky Insurance, give them all your details and the quote you got from Flux, they will, most of the time, beat it.

Ring GreenLight Insurance (our Insurance partner), give them your details, give them your cheapest quote, and then tell them you are a member of ElgrandOC to get your 15% discount. If they cannot beat the quote from Sky, go with them.

There are a lot of members who are more than happy, or have had their best quotes from some of the normal, big name insurance companies such as Direct Line, Admiral, Aviva etc. So if you really want to get a comparison across the board, ring some known insurance companies too and see if they can be competitive or not. But I would advise you ring the three Jap Import Specialist insurers listed above first, and then go to the big known insurance companies.

There is a whole different routine you will have to take to insure a FRESH IMPORT that has NOT BEEN REGISTERED. You need to insure on the Chassis number etc, and things are more complicated overall... so if you are looking at insuring an Elgrand off the boat to get in home for MOT etc, then please check in the "Import Experiences" forum section to see what others have done.

Hope this helps.
I have just got into Elgrand ownership, I have managed to get it insured quite easily and competitively with admiral insurance on a multicar policy.

I've had my cars insured with quotemehappy for the last few years and have always been very competitive (multicar discount too). Renewal for my old Elgrand would have been around £200.

Only problem is, they don't like modifications and the maximum age of car they'll insure could become an issue soon....

Anyhow, just I've switched back to Mark Richards / Japcover again. £385 with business use and fine with any wheels, suspension, exhaust, etc modifications. More than I'd like to be paying but most things are these days!

Appreciate the info and advice. I’m due for renewal in a couple of weeks. I’ve been with Direct Line since ownership started as they were the best for me personally, but never hurts to shop about each time 👍🏻

i have been with mark richards for about 13 years now with my imports thats 2 delicas and the Elgrand never had a problem

I think age, location, parking arrangements etc all affect price. I went through Adrian Flux because they offer an alteration policy where you can make changes to the vehicle without affecting premium, for example we are getting a full Northstar conversion done, and then can send photos to get guranteed value.

Legend, tried the usual compare sights before checking here, and you are right, they just charge silly, looks like going through greenlight, mentioned elgrandoc and the representative straight away knew it. So far the best price.

I think you will find that if you have just brought your vehicle and insuring it for the 1st or 2nd year you will have trouble on the compare sites because this is what I found on the 3rd year onwards I never had any problems getting really cheap quotes I've just done mine I am 67 and 15 years no claims bonus and one accident 10% my fault 90% their fault it’s a 3.5 and with confused.com I got it for £241 with Avia and a £20 voucher for Lidl.

1 thing I have found strange is voluntary excess I always get a cheaper quote if I put £0 excess I’ve never understood that one is worth trying.

It’s been about that price for the last 3 years.

It seems to be cheaper if you try and get your insurance 3 to 4 weeks before the old one runs out.

old post I know but had this on a 4x 4 shogun mainly I think as scum were using them for ram raiding never bothered getting it done and owned for 10 years with no problems guess it depends on if you live in a high crime area .

just insured mine through admiral. replaced it with my 2019 vito tourer 9 seater and it cost me and additional 50 pound:cool:

Just for info!
You don’t need loads of mods for green light to insure you , just a couple of little things will normally do
