Insuring your Elgrand

I am new to the E51 world getting my first tomorrow after opting out of the company car scheme After a lot of shopping around I went with Churchill had to ring up as the reg number wasn't on the database and spoke to a really knowledgeable guy very friendly, really new his stuff and was able to sort me out a decent quote with transferred NCB, business use (for foster carers) etc. I did steer clear of the Green Flag option by going direct the same breakdown cover was 50% cheaper

I went to insure my new E50 Elgrand with Lancaster (previously used them for my MK1 MX5) they wanted almost 2.5K for the year!!!!!

Almost spat my tea on my keyboard!

I ended up going with Admiral for £535 fully comp with all teh extras (only been driving for 4 years) :D

Great price, so much less than mine, 2 accidents will drop off my 5 year history next year. Bring it on.

found Adrian flux to be the cheapest and best for most of my jdm cars
Flux seem to fall out with lots of people. I fell out with them over a VW camper and crazy high renewal quote. They were extremely unhelpful. Never going back there.

Just completed a renewal with Mark Richard. No having to send the same paper work off as a previous year this time round. They are letting you pay over 3 months for no additional charge. They came in a bit higher than Churchill Essentials, i dont know what items are stripped out to make it Essential so just renewed. Added no claims insurance now i am back to 4 years no claims.

I had a motorbike insured with Flux a while back, and due to the way they handle the theft claim I can say I will never use them again!! 😳

The best I have found it is £444 with Sterling via the Meerkats. It started at nearly £600 but got it down by reducing my voluntary excess interestingly. I did also get a VW T5 quote and that was £365 so the Elgrand isn't massively more.

My importer recommended Mark Richard. I dont think many of their underwriters would appear in an online comparison. They have Jap import department 01275792270.

Insurance is always a hot topic of conversation, especially when it comes to Japanese Imports.

As a general rule of thumb, there should be no real "premiums" for insuring the Elgrand over any other vehicle in it's class. The problem you may find is that insurance databases are not always as up to date as they should be when it comes to imports.

Typically, you want to be going for a Japanese Import Specialist insurer. These are usually the best in terms of keeping up to date with import vehicles on their database. They will also, USUALLY, be the most competitive.

Do NOT bother wasting time with comparison sites for your Elgrand... they will throw up ridiculous quotes and just be a waste of your time. Go to insurance companies directly.

My general advice to anyone who asks is to follow the below:

Contact Adrian Flux. Give them all your details and get a quote - I would not recommend taking a policy out with Flux due to the level of complaints I have seen/heard from people in the event of a claim. But, this is just hearsay really, so it's up to you if you choose to insure with them.

Ring Sky Insurance, give them all your details and the quote you got from Flux, they will, most of the time, beat it.

Ring GreenLight Insurance (our Insurance partner), give them your details, give them your cheapest quote, and then tell them you are a member of ElgrandOC to get your 15% discount. If they cannot beat the quote from Sky, go with them.

There are a lot of members who are more than happy, or have had their best quotes from some of the normal, big name insurance companies such as Direct Line, Admiral, Aviva etc. So if you really want to get a comparison across the board, ring some known insurance companies too and see if they can be competitive or not. But I would advise you ring the three Jap Import Specialist insurers listed above first, and then go to the big known insurance companies.

There is a whole different routine you will have to take to insure a FRESH IMPORT that has NOT BEEN REGISTERED. You need to insure on the Chassis number etc, and things are more complicated overall... so if you are looking at insuring an Elgrand off the boat to get in home for MOT etc, then please check in the "Import Experiences" forum section to see what others have done.

Hope this helps.
Very useful thanks

I shopped around getting quotes from camper specialist insurance companies , then went to my current insurer Direct Line, multi car user £730 thats with lots of extras added ,they beat the camper specialists on price.
i am London based so insurance is premium unfortunately

I don't think this has been mentioned before (I can only find one forum reference to them) but Quotezone are an internet comparison site (without the expense/overheads of silly TV adverts) who have a specific section for Japanese imports getting quotes from various insurance companies including Flux and Heritage - may well be worth a try rather than spending extra time approaching each company directly;

Will try this, cheers 🍻

Got a quote through direct line £253.12, will be happy with that
How does it change so much between people. I've done mine through Admiral for £650 which I thought was steep but Direct line quoted me £1750. Lunacy. I'm 48 and never had an accident in my life, no points ever, licence from 1993.
God knows what I'm doing wrong.

The post you're quoting is from 2018. According to the Guardian Direct Line are currently losing money, they probably don't want your business and are taking a punt with a really high premium.

Apart from losing money Direct Line have been ordered by the FCA to review all write off claims over the last 5 years to identify any where the settlement paid has been below fair market value and pay compensation too anyone affected.
I suspect given the difficulty of establishing fair market value for jdm vehicles in general their approach may have hardened somewhat.
This added to other factors has seen their share price half in the last 12 months.
Anyone currently insured with Direct Line may see premiums soar at renewal.

I tried using Green Light and the guy was not helpful at all. I insisted about the small mods, still no luck.
