I went for both just to be on the safe side, plus you’ll find if you are running the rail most of the way along you’ll need to use screws to pull the rail flush to the roof as it slopes down at the front.

I’ll try and get a pic next week (I don’t have room to keep the van at home). I used two sections of rail, so 2.4m and couldn’t be bothered to cut them down. So it does probably extend past the passenger door a bit but you don’t have to use it all. For me as long as it fitted under the pop up roof that was the main criteria.
 
any idea what size screws I need ?

Is 1/2 screws enough or is 3/4 inch needed ?

Do you have to have a rail fitted proffessionally/ do you actually have to have a rail to attach an awning... Sorry I know I sound very nieve!

We’ve bought a Vango Galli 3 Air low. It fits perfectly with straps you just throw over the roof. Rail just isn’t needed.

Hope I’ve not already posted this, I’ve not read the full thread. 👍👍👍

Had it a few years now.

Thought I'd add to this thread as seemed better to keep similar info/ideas on one place for people looking searching

Finally finished my C rail setup. Didn't want to stick and/or drill permanently to roof so came up with idea of utilising the roof rack mount points in combination with the suckers I've been using to date.
Previously I've just been using the 3 awning straps, 1 attached to each sucker, which has worked fine other than leaving a gap between the vehicle roof and the awning door 'lip', creating a bit of a wind trap, and certainly not water tight!

New solution has the C rail tight against vehicle roof ( 2mm rubber strip/seal on underside of C rail).

Yet to be tested 'in the field' but seems pretty sturdy so far...

Slightly inconvenient is the fact that the distance from front roof rack mount to centre one, is different to the distance between centre and rear, and as I wanted the flexibility to attach either side (depending on campsite conditions), I cut in some slots to allow outer mounts to slide forwards/backwards to suit.
These areas were reinforced with thicker aluminium (JB Welded) to C rail, otherwise a decent breeze will probably just bend the rail.
If it turns out not to be strong enough I'll have to opt for 2 separate bolt holes, which was originally my plan but imagined it might be a bit fiddly moving brackets in the wind and rain!

I also tried using some nylon webbing straps running over the roof from the opposite roof rack mounts (i.e. connecting the metal hooked brackets both sides) instead of the suckers, but couldn't get straps tight enough, plus the webbing had the tiniest amount of give in it, so wasn't confident a strong wind wouldn't 'unhook' the brackets from roof rack mounts, if that makes sense!
