Insuring your Elgrand

Insurance is always a hot topic of conversation, especially when it comes to Japanese Imports.

As a general rule of thumb, there should be no real "premiums" for insuring the Elgrand over any other vehicle in it's class. The problem you may find is that insurance databases are not always as up to date as they should be when it comes to imports.

Typically, you want to be going for a Japanese Import Specialist insurer. These are usually the best in terms of keeping up to date with import vehicles on their database. They will also, USUALLY, be the most competitive.

Do NOT bother wasting time with comparison sites for your Elgrand... they will throw up ridiculous quotes and just be a waste of your time. Go to insurance companies directly.

My general advice to anyone who asks is to follow the below:

Contact Adrian Flux. Give them all your details and get a quote - I would not recommend taking a policy out with Flux due to the level of complaints I have seen/heard from people in the event of a claim. But, this is just hearsay really, so it's up to you if you choose to insure with them.

Ring Sky Insurance, give them all your details and the quote you got from Flux, they will, most of the time, beat it.

Ring GreenLight Insurance (our Insurance partner), give them your details, give them your cheapest quote, and then tell them you are a member of ElgrandOC to get your 15% discount. If they cannot beat the quote from Sky, go with them.

There are a lot of members who are more than happy, or have had their best quotes from some of the normal, big name insurance companies such as Direct Line, Admiral, Aviva etc. So if you really want to get a comparison across the board, ring some known insurance companies too and see if they can be competitive or not. But I would advise you ring the three Jap Import Specialist insurers listed above first, and then go to the big known insurance companies.

There is a whole different routine you will have to take to insure a FRESH IMPORT that has NOT BEEN REGISTERED. You need to insure on the Chassis number etc, and things are more complicated overall... so if you are looking at insuring an Elgrand off the boat to get in home for MOT etc, then please check in the "Import Experiences" forum section to see what others have done.

Hope this helps.

Can anyone help. I have an e51 on UK plates, work in Switzerland, live in France, can't insure in Switzerland as not on Swiss plates, can't insure in England as overseas 6 months a year or more, in August I need new mot, do I need to return to UK? How can I get this sorted to change to French plates? If I declare at customs is 5000 francs to register vehicle, have to have owned 6 months etc, has anybody ever had similar? Thanks, Steve

That's interesting, and in future Brexit may make it even more so!! To be honest you would obviously find it much easier to either buy another car in France and leave your Elgrand in the UK, or pay to register your Elgrand in France, because you will struggle to get UK insurance as you have found. Not many underwriters will insure you in the UK for driving mainly overseas if you live overseas, as you would be expected to get local insurance. I wouldn't of thought not having a UK MOT when in France would be an issue as you aren't driving on UK roads, but it is may be a condition of your insurance if it's UK-based so could make insurance invalid?

I don't know if they have a similar car test in France you would need. Obviously if your MOT lapsed whiie in France you couldn't drive your Elgrand back to the UK as it wouldn't have one when you got to the UK. However, wouldn't you be expected at some point to register the Elgrand in France if you live there? I assume I couldn't buy a French-registered car and drive it in the UK long-term? I know in Jersey if you move there you are expected to get a new driving license and car registration as soon as possible.

Good luck, hope you sort something out!

Good Afternoon, thank you for your response, I have changed my UK license to Swiss now, I have no need for UK ANYMORE. I just bought my house so not aware of rules there yet, Paul from Worcester Road said is very hard to register there. Thanks, Steve

Really helpful info. Thank you

Being a foster carer i have to have business insurance. Just to let people know i rang greenlight and sky and both said they can't cover for business. Seriously thinking of selling as my renewal came in at £862.22

I’ve just told greenlight where to shove their policy. I have sent all sorts of information to them from copies of driving licences tocopies of other insurance policies. Whatever I sent didn’t seem to tick the boxes.
Rang LV and got sorted straight away and the bonus of it been £110 cheaper

Would it be worth trying some of the more well known companies like Aviva etc. ? Most of them seem to offer business cover these days

Yeah I needed business cover and green light wouldn’t do me either. I went with admiral in the end, they ticked all the boxes for me - could do business, could insure it on chassis number before I had the reg number from DVLA, and they listed the 2.5 litre 2008 year. It started off at £580 but when I added my old car and my wife’s, it was down to £400 on multi car. LV could do business too but only list the 3.5 not the 2.5.

I have just insured my Elgrand through Scenic Motorhomes.
I have an E51 3.5 at a cost of £456 with legal protection insurance and AA breakdown insurance.

LV wanted about £600 ish from me much the same as my renewal price from direct line. Green light insured me for just over £400 with Highway which is a subsidiary of LV! Baffles me that I got a cheaper price from a broker than directly through an insurance company.

E51 HWS 3.5 less than 200 quid as 1 of 3 on an admiral multicar policy, used aviva to batter them down so stayed with them.
I know I'm a ****

Iam with Adrian flux £350 half than the other quotes

Adrian flux quoted me about £580 to beat my existing renewal then tried to pressure me into paying a deposit claiming the quote may not be honoured as it was on a "live" system. Told them I would call them back when I had been paid. Did I call back...did I ****!

Very useful thread. It’s good to hear that admiral recognise the car. Hopefully they’ll come up with a reasonable premium should I decide to proceed.

Can I ask if anybody has had any problem with insuring a camper conversion?

My father did thay wanted photo's as it was being built.,. luckily my mum had . And a engineers report on structure

Do you know if the premium changed from being a passenger vehicle to a camper?

That part was done through DVLA same thing . photo's and report . premium was on multi car extra £50 with 5 named drivers . after DVLA changed from passenger to camper no problems with insurance

This was because it was a self build
