Insuring your Elgrand

Just 3 years no claim bonus (haven’t drive in UK before), 3 points for speeding, 29 years driving license, no other driver on the insurance. The thing is that they virtually have no competition, due of lack of date base.
Yes, sounds very harsh. You're no doubt correct about no competition and the database issue. 3 points is negligible, cost wise. I reckon it's 100% that database thing, as I'll have NO no claims (another car got it), compared to your 3 years, and my cost seems to be looking at 600-mid 600 hundreds. Like you said though, that's probably as the E51 is in the databases.
Sorry to read about your plight, and fingers crossed luck changes next year.

I had my Ford Galaxy insured with Admiral. They just called me and they said they cannot insure my Nissan Elgrand E52.
Unrelated - I knew that this car it is lower, but I thought I will not go off road with it. Yesterday I couldn’t enter in someone’s drive way due to the road and sidewalk level difference.

Bizarre. I wonder what it is about the E52. I'm also with Admiral, was able to complete my insurance swap online (E51 though) without talking to anyone, and it only put my premium up to £231, an increase of £11 (and that was from a car in insurance group 22!)

It doesn’t make sense to pay so much, but it is like they have a monopoly on this segment.

For insurance purposes, it asks 'number of seats'. I'm sure my upcoming Elgrand: http://www.colinpricecars.co.uk/carsDetail.php?Nissan-Elgrand-785 has 7 seats (two front, two right at the back, two 'normal' middle seats, plus that little one between them). The write up in the listing says it has 8 seats? Surely it's 7? Cheers for anyone who can confirm I ain't going even madder
It's 8. 2, 3,3. But the people in the centre on either the middle or back rows better have a small bum.

Interesting. Why is the back bench a 3? The rear bench has two seats and only two seat belts by the look at the photo?

It has a lap belt in the middle. I agree, it ain't comfy, but it is a seat 🤷🏻

Insurance is always a hot topic of conversation, especially when it comes to Japanese Imports.

As a general rule of thumb, there should be no real "premiums" for insuring the Elgrand over any other vehicle in it's class. The problem you may find is that insurance databases are not always as up to date as they should be when it comes to imports.

Typically, you want to be going for a Japanese Import Specialist insurer. These are usually the best in terms of keeping up to date with import vehicles on their database. They will also, USUALLY, be the most competitive.

Do NOT bother wasting time with comparison sites for your Elgrand... they will throw up ridiculous quotes and just be a waste of your time. Go to insurance companies directly.

My general advice to anyone who asks is to follow the below:

Contact Adrian Flux. Give them all your details and get a quote - I would not recommend taking a policy out with Flux due to the level of complaints I have seen/heard from people in the event of a claim. But, this is just hearsay really, so it's up to you if you choose to insure with them.

Ring Sky Insurance, give them all your details and the quote you got from Flux, they will, most of the time, beat it.

Ring GreenLight Insurance (our Insurance partner), give them your details, give them your cheapest quote, and then tell them you are a member of ElgrandOC to get your 15% discount. If they cannot beat the quote from Sky, go with them.

There are a lot of members who are more than happy, or have had their best quotes from some of the normal, big name insurance companies such as Direct Line, Admiral, Aviva etc. So if you really want to get a comparison across the board, ring some known insurance companies too and see if they can be competitive or not. But I would advise you ring the three Jap Import Specialist insurers listed above first, and then go to the big known insurance companies.

There is a whole different routine you will have to take to insure a FRESH IMPORT that has NOT BEEN REGISTERED. You need to insure on the Chassis number etc, and things are more complicated overall... so if you are looking at insuring an Elgrand off the boat to get in home for MOT etc, then please check in the "Import Experiences" forum section to see what others have done.

Hope this helps.
Really helpful thank you

I think Sky are now called 'safelyinsured'?

Particularly helpful post!
Thank you very much Karl.

In the process of trying to insure my E52, I initially tried a broker who, after making some calls, got back to me saying the lot that usually deal in Jap xports with them arent currently taking on any more clients. I tried some of the usual suspects and getting absurd quotes so eventually opted to just switch over policy with Admiral from my last car and pay the difference. They offered the cheapest quote at £618 for the year on comparisons so they might be a shout for renewal from early next year. But yes, like Ive read so far, they had difficulty with their car database and had to go through spec/model step by step.

Renewal from LV £380, gone up £100 from last year...

A search got me £350 with Adrimal but couldn't be arsed to swap over for the sake £30...
E51 3.5L 2 drivers,full no claims...

I have tried to switch from the old car with Admiral, but they called after a few days saying that cannot I sure my E52. I don’t understand how it is possible for some, but not for others.

Direct Line have usually been the cheapest by far for me, but their renewal came through the other day, an increase of 41% over last year! (no claims, bumps, convictions). 10 mins on their live chat got that down to a 13% increase. Still got time to shop around...

LV are only doing continuation policies, and they're no longer doing imports if you ring up fresh. I'm with LV with the other motors, but they told me when I rang them that they now don't do imports, but would CONTINUE if I was already with them. So you're probably good to stay with them as it gives another option (their renewal quote) next year.

Yes, going by a few other owners, you may well have been fortunate to at least got someone to get on-board with the E52.
Hopefully as time goes on, more E52s will hit our shores (as they're 'newer' than E51s), and more outlets will insure them/have them on databases.
