Why are CVTs used at all in general, is it a cost thing?
Mainly it's better fuel efficiency and cheaper production. Car makers love that combo!

Fuel efficiency is because the engine can be kept around the RPM in which it's most efficient - revs stay the same and it smoothly adjusts the gearing instead.

Cheaper production is because it's fewer parts and less material, with less machining and quicker assembly.

CVTs suffer from three things:

- high torque, such as accelerating hard in first gear, put a lot of strain on them. This means they'll wear out more quickly (especially in a car that is heavy or is towing).

- good lubrication is essential. Overheating destroys the lubricant, and some early CVTs had insufficient cooling. Many owners, especially those towing, will fit more powerful cooling solutions. Also, changing the fluid is a very good idea but put in the wrong fluid and you may massively increase wear, destroying your CVT in short order.

CVTs also have a reputation for not being easily repairable - presumably a new metal belt is totally different to slapping in some new/donor cogs.

That'll rule out any import with a CVT then. Also, finding a garage who'll change the cvt oil, and actually know how to do it properly, adds another unknowing factor.

I see and contribute to a lot of negativity around the E52 and the CVT, some justified. but I've been looking at the Japanese auctions recently and I'm astonished at the amount of E52s with 300k,km plus on their clocks and they sell pretty well, take a look at this one, 395k,km -

Shouldn't really post this publicly as the Japanese auction houses are very sensitive and sanction the agents.

But yes, they can handle the mileage if the CVT fluid is changed as opposed to only inspected - which is what Nissan directed dealers to do.

Japanese owners rarely keep a car beyond 60,000km or 100,000 at a push. 400,000km indicates it was used as a taxi. Quite common as airport limos and tourist links as well as "Kojin Taxis".

The fact that they can be run as taxis means that with proper servicing they are golden.
