What have you done to your Elgrand today?

Not today but, finally got booked into a garage in the last couple of weeks. The replacement camshaft sensors I fitted was duff like the original. They fitted a new one. It worked. Got oil changed while it was there. Garage mentioned it needs a new front driveshaft inner boot on one side and there is some rack play on the other side there is more paying out coming soon.

Had new drivers front tyre fitted to match the passenger one I had fitted a few hundred miles ago. They said they had the import pack (not a hunter machine) software installed, owner is a JDM nut, would I like the alignment checked. After 30 minutes of swearing he comes back surprised. Import bluebird and 300zx yes, but no Elgrands at all. He was very disappointed.
 
Yeah , mines what came with the iron 0% lead 99.3% tin, it’s also fluxed so as long as I get it hot enough and never use another flux with it then it just about does the job.
Found out the hard way about mixing types of flux , joints turn to dust.
Sometimes I feel like going back to cello tape like back in the day lol

It spends half the time falling off for me lol mind think I need a new iron that's not helping things either,I did get some wella solder to try but haven't got round to it yet

My old iron has definatley seen better days and was only a cheapee when I bought it most likely 20 years ago althogh somehow or another I have managed to make quite a few different sorts of cables and connections alhough not the prettyist with it over the years without too much damage either to myself or anything else.

I have quite a bit of soldering to do over the next few months and my grandson has promised me that I can have the use of his Milwaukee cordless soldering iron which I am hoping will improve my soldering a bit as I have always found the cable to be a right pain on my existing iron always running out of cable or it tangling up at the wrong time.

Be interesting how you get on with the milwaukee I went from chord to gas which is miles more convenient if your under a dash ect mines just a cheap aldi one which I've had years it's been good but now it won't stay lit and keep having to ignite it by that time the heat has gone lol

Will do, he loves it but having said that it's the only iron he has had and I think for me it is bound to be an improvement on what I have been used to.

Like you I will have a few bits that need to be done in situ so hopefully if nothing else should make these easier

You would think so mil are normally top quality tools
 
Today my Elgrand had a funny turn. I don't often give it much welly, mainly to overtake tractors, but today I put my foot down for an overtake and it didn't want to pick up so I thought to myself an ideal opportunity to flick on the onboard NDS and have a quick look at what was going on and I was greeted with a P0174 lean mixture code. No light on the dash mind, so next I checked the Flexfuel app on my phone which monitors the ethanol ECU and it was indicating 99% ethanol and a contaminated fuel warning!

As fuel level was pretty low anyway I went to the nearest fuel station and added half a tank of 98RON petrol. After letting it run for a couple of minutes I cleared both fault codes which haven't returned as yet and performance seems to be back to normal and now indicating 32% ethanol.

So not sure exactly what happened. You would think a tank full of contaminated fuel would be immediately obvious, maybe phase separation and a bit of separated water/pure ethanol in the tank being picked up at a low fuel level? I'll bung in some anti separation additive and see how it goes.

Sounds to me like you have it sussed mate , only way to really know would be to replicate the circumstances but not sure that’s the best idea
 
Yeah! But 50€ for half of a tank of petrol stung a bit, I usually fill up for less. Might avoid using the previous fuel station again in case there's an issue with their E85.

It's a good iron, no temperature control though
