Started on Friday… Before and after… machine polish, a fresh set of wheels, suspension upgrade and a few extra mods… 48 hour transformation in time for Japfest today. I didn’t get to the side skirts, which need some minor repair, but they will be back on soon…

They're a little tricky.

The unit is fully sealed with wires coming out thr back, there's also a piece of plastic on the back that may be used to clip into the car they are designed for but it's not much use to you.

The front clear section has a lip all the way round which overhangs the back section, but it's not equal it's offset, more overhang at the top, about 4mm than the bottom which is about 2mm.

I wanted to set them deep inside the opening so to avoid any damage if you slightly bang the bumper so the only real method available to me was to cut a hole and hope for a push fit.

I cut a paper template of the back and marked it on the bumper. I drilled a series of 20mm holes and then used an hacksaw blade and file to open it out.

When I was happy it was something like I filled around the hole full of clear exterior silicone and also around the lamp itself and pushed it in, wiping off the excess.

The first one I did I cut the hole slightly too big and so aired on the cautious side with the other.

As for the wires.

Take off the internal covers in the boot to expose the bulb holders.

I used the grommet that the sunroof tubes go through which you can see from underneath the car, pull out the tube, feed the wires through, and reinsert the tube.

***Not sure if none sunroof vehicles have the grommet***

If you get to that stage it's just a case of identifying the correct wires and tapping off them.

I’m going to have a go later today at installing them and will go the easiest route I can find: drills, silicone and cable ties planning to tap into the wires just behind the original bulbs (is that right?). Would you be able to share the wiring instructions if you remember them please? I’m assuming black is ground, red is tail light, green is brake and white is reverse?

I’m going to have a go later today at installing them and will go the easiest route I can find: drills, silicone and cable ties planning to tap into the wires just behind the original bulbs (is that right?). Hi

Black is Negative/Earth - I fixed to the adjacent stud with a ring crimp.

Red is Fog Light - removed the wire the dealer put in from the switch on the dashboard and re-routed to to the red wire, sent another wire under the boot trim to the other light unit.

Green is Rear/Tail Light - tucked away out of use.

White is Reverse Light - found the original reverse wire the dealer had removed (Series 3 Black & White) and connected to white wire, replicated that on the other side.

Each wire feeds a different bank of leds within the unit so in theory if you sent a feed down all 3 they'd all light at once.

That means if you have used them as fog lights, by connecting the red wire, when you select Reverse the white would come on as well, none over ride each other.

I suppose you could wire them via a switch or relay to make this happen but I figured there's not going to be many times I'll be using them both together and I've still got the original reverse lights as well so won't confuse anyone....its just the fogs will look slightly "pink".

Pro tip: KwikFit finishes at 5pm for the day here, I always book a 3pm Mot slot if I can. They tend to “move quickly” towards the end of the day and stick to the things they HAVE to look at. Although touch wood so far my Beast has been immaculate in every way. I got it from Japanese MPV near Heathrow and mine has been mint so far!

No worries.

Green for extra tail lights in that case.

Like I say if your tail lights are on already when you engage reverse it will illuminate a mixture of white and low level red leds.

I think you're correct but I'll take my chances. I live next door to a traffic cop, I'll ask him if he would get involved if he saw it. Knowing him I think he wouldn't be arsed.

Thanks. I’ve also toyed with having a switch for the two reverse bumper lights, just manual, and use it as lighting for when the boot door is open as an awning.
I actually bought a red and white combined led bulb a while ago, then dropped it into the lens and gave up. I might fish it out now when doing this.

They are only held in place by the wheel studs and rust.

Sorry only just seen your question there are no screws the wheel keeps them in place, you do have to remoce the callipers of course.

Didn't take the Elgrand, but I saw a nice white '05 plate one, nice condition, parked up in 'The Wingfield Hotel' car park, down 'The Brad' (Llanbradach), when I took the car with the dog for a walk earlier.
