I know there's 4wd and all, but still as a platform isn't Delica, for example, a better choice for offroading than Elgrand? Elgrands always seemed a bit fragile to me tbh.
Excellent question.
I chose based on the following parameters:
1. Interior. Elgrand E50 has a larger and more comfortable interior, especially the 2nd row seats.
2. Engine. QD32 diesel has a cast iron block, cast iron cylinder head, timing drive - gears. Minimum electronics and durability of about 1,000,000 km without opening the engine. The Mitsu 4M40 engine is much less reliable and is afraid of overheating.
3. Transmission. Elgrand has the same as Terrano R50 or Pathfinder R50. The transmission is incredibly durable and generally serves the entire life of the car without repairs.
4. All-wheel drive. Mitsu super select. Elgrand all-mode. the same. 3 modes - rear-wheel drive, auto and all-wheel drive (center differential lock, like part time) and you can also turn on everything while driving. Low gear - here Mitsu wins, since Delica has it, but....
But until 1999, Elgrands were equipped with a transfer case from Terrano R50, and above the flange of the front cardan shaft you can see the lever for engaging low gear.. so having any lever or cable, you can implement engaging low gear on Elgrand E50.
That's all.. And wait.. LSD gear.. We buy a rear LSD gearbox Nissan Terrano R50 - 1.5 hours of work and Elgrand has LSD..
5. Frame or integrated frame. It is worth looking under Elgrand E50 and seeing a huge and strong integrated frame, it immediately becomes clear that it is not easy to break. The only downside is that in order to put more or less large SUV tires, you need to do work to increase the ground clearance, not just spacers, but moving the subframe and other things, which I have done. Here Mitsu wins, since you can install larger diameter SUV tires in stock.
Result:
For me, Elgrand is the embodiment of reliability, space and comfort on any road and in any conditions. It is worth putting in a little effort and you can make it for yourself.. And yes, I am not a fan of Mitsu, I love Nissans)
I am sure that Mitsu are excellent cars, but the harsh Siberian winter shows that the diesel hearts of Nissan survive here and show incredible reliability results.
