Insuring your Elgrand

Mine went up £90, to £442. That was renewing through Aviva. The comparison websites were starting at £500 for me.
I'm on Multicar with Admiral, Last year was £900ish for Elgrand, Motorhome & Chevy tow-car combined. Renewal due in a month so fingers-crossed for no big surprises

Just getting a quote for mine.

Admiral - £549.22
Adrian Flux - £696
Direct Line - £729.90

Yet to call Sky insurance as they are shut (I assum these? https://safelyinsured.co.uk/blog/2021/03/sky-insurance-is-now-safely-insured)

Then i'll call greenlight tomorrow afterwards and see.
To conclude this for others. We added 'Business use, class 1' as my wife will be a child minder at some point in this policy.

- Admiral £550 with multi car discount (went direct but forgot to mention Wife is main driver and needed business). Agreed a call back today at the end of the day as it seemed reasonable.
- Direct line - £689 or £729 with business use.
- Sky Insurance - Not interested.
- Aviva - Declined
- Howden (I have home and works van with them, very good professional company) - £635. Wont give a quote for business till the time comes but estimate around £100/ £150 for the year.
- Greenlight (with club discount) - £560 but wont insure for business.
Considering we both had none fault accidents in last 12 months. My car was a write off and hers was repaired I was expecting the £500 mark all in.

I felt i was going round in circles from one extreme to another. I was waiting for Greenlight to call back and was getting anxious of time as it was coming up to 4.30pm. I just typed into google "Jap import class 1 business car insurance" and the following site came up. Never heard of them: https://www.moneyexpert.com/

I did the reg and it found it right away and proceeded with my details as like everyone else. Admiral came in at £436.00, this was fully comp without Windscreen, Legal or Hire Car and did cover business. With these all added it came in £580. Told the guy on the phone what i did and he managed to do the original quote for £530.00 all in!

Pays to shop around

Try Churchill just had my renewal £327 fully comp

My renewals are coming in around this price.
Lowest was Ageas essentials at £250ish though and Trustpilot reviews are OK although I have never heard of them.
I would like to move away from Aviva zero as reviews are not great in the event you do need to claim.

Japcover aka Mark Richards was my best quote this time around. I will never use Flux, they were a massive pain in the bum.

I too would never use flux again, rip-off merchants if you need to change vehicles halfway through insurance year.

I have just bought a 2001 E50 campervan conversion and insured it with Adrian Flux. I am 67 years old and have a 19 year NCB for my car but no company seems to want to insure both vehicles and let me use my NCB with the Elgrand. I'm told it can only be used on one vehicle. Does this sound right?

Sounds right , your ncb is was accrued on one car not two so the later car will start from scratch and build up a ncb year by year .
You would normally be offered some sort of discount for the second car

Cheers Dave. That's a bugger.
Personally I’d get rid of first car and keep the Elgrand lol

This makes interesting reading

Technically, you cannot use the exact same No Claims Bonus (NCB) on two vehicles simultaneously. However, if you are looking to set up a twin-car or multi-car policy, several insurers offer a "mirrored" NCB, allowing you to apply the equivalent discount to your second car. [1, 2]
Navigating a second car policy involves a few key routes:

1. Mirrored NCB
  • How it works: The insurer reflects your current NCB from your main vehicle onto your second vehicle, giving you the same percentage discount on both.
  • The catch: If you make a claim on either car, it will affect the NCB on both vehicles.
  • Who offers it: Insurers that are known to offer this on twin-car policies include Admiral, Hastings Direct, Howden, and Keith Michaels. [1, 2, 3, 4]

2. Multi-Car Insurance Policies
  • How it works: You bundle both cars under one policy with a single renewal date.
  • Separate bonuses: Technically, each car still builds its own independent NCB under the same provider.
  • The benefit: Insurers usually provide a multi-car discount just for having both vehicles with them. [1, 2, 3]

3. Introductory No Claims Discount
  • How it works: If your provider doesn't offer a mirrored NCB, they will usually offer a "second car introductory discount".
  • The benefit: While your second car will officially start at zero NCB, the insurer will apply a discount that usually equates to the value of a 1- or 2-year NCB. [1, 2, 3]

Top Tips:
  • Check the rules: Insurers usually require you to be the main policyholder on both cars to get a mirrored discount.
  • Shop around: Don't automatically renew both cars with your current provider. Since rules vary wildly between companies, use a comparison site to see who provides the best dual-car rates. [1, 2]

Thanks again Dave, I am sure I managed to insure a kit car and an ordinary car together about 30 years ago. I will shop around at renewal times.
