Insuring your Elgrand

Have you rang them, they rely on people just auto renewing.
Ring them and remind them you have the house too and your not happy, sometimes good results come from a couple of threats to leave
Pity you have to go through this merry dance isn't it, and they don't just recognise your customer loyalty 🙄

I'm with Churchill, last year £382 this year £234. The first year it was £560 with Admiral.

Just got my renewal quote from Churchill
Last year £836.32
This year £1423.46
I know I live in a bad post code area but this is a rip off ,last year I told them I had retired and did not need business so it should have come down as the risk is less not the other way round, so when I am home on Tuesday ( I am in Weymouth visiting family) I will be going on line to check if I can get insurance for the over 60 s as I only need socal, domestic and pleasure and I have full no claims and van is parked of road when not in use,ti say I am piss off at the moment would be an understatement
When an insurer doubles your renewal quote like that it means they just don't want you to renew. Every insurer has a particular customer risk type they want to cover, and when you drop out of that they put the renewal up a stupid amount to nudge you to go elsewhere.

Also, i have noticed insurers seem to class off road parking aa a higher risk than on road nowadays. When i changed the parking location for my convertible from the road to the drive the price actually went up. This is probably as the majority of remote key attacks and cat thefts happen on drives rather than on the road, as they are closer to the house for the first and easier to hide in the shadows for the second.

Edit- i meant off road parking is a lower risk than on the drive now.

Hi Tim that's been my thinking from day one I will be going on line to find other quotes, back in the day it was cheaper to have your car on a drive but I get what you are saying about today's cars my house insurance will also go elsewhere, I will be looking tomorrow and renewing before the end of the week ,I also believe they are using A1 to sort their quotes last year I may the mistaken of auto renewal, I won't be doing that again

Yes, you always have to ask for a cheaper quote. I am on admiral multicar and AI handled my discussions to get a cheaper combined quote directly online. Went down from £830 to £730 for both an E class convertible (1 year NCB) and hyundai santa fe (15 years NCB that replaced the Elgrand). To be honest I never paid more than £350 to insure the Elgrand though.

Went on line today and the cheapest quote was just under 700 and that was with a blackbox fitted so have gone with Admiral for £55 move than last year my problem is my post code second highest for car crime in my area and next to postcode with the number one spot ,I need to win the lottery so I can move to good area ,may need to look at blackbox or cover type next year

Being used to shopping round as also have a customised motorbike but when I got the Elgrand my current car insurers wouldn't cover it. When Compare the whatever site and ended up being cheaper to ensure than my Fiat Punto, and don't have loads of NCB as wrote off my Galaxy a few years ago. Ended up being £300 ish

Just an update on my post.
Have been playing on the named comparison site.
If you don't put the registration in but just make and model you get cheaper quotes, only when paying do you have to enter the reg, and the price doesn't change.
But if I put reg in first, the quotes were all higher.
Might help someone?

I've been reading with great interest on thus forum regarding insurance and the grey area regarding towing in the UK. Has anyone had insurance refused on the basis of adding a towbar?
I'd like to know that too!

I would think it's more a case of will a third parties insurance pay out if they mash into whatever your towing? Or vice versa and you find yourself in a legal battle as your insurance is declared void. Do you want to be the guinea pig?

It's an age old argument on here. It might be possible to have your Elgrand tow rated in the UK by a government approved assessor. Here in France I am banned from towing as there is a strict policy that requires manufacturers specifications on the VIN plate, of which there are none. I could have it tow rated here but it's not worth the expense as I don't need to tow anything.

They also don't count roof bars or a roof box as a modification so that's my present sorted 😂

I am looking to buy a second hand (in UK terms) E51, being the better ones tend to have enthusiast owners, lots are modified in one way or another.

Out of interest is there a rule of thumb over what we need to declare and what we don't (ie what the insurers consider modifications)?

You should really declare everything thing and they will ignore what they need to , they classify such as lights etc as cosmetic etc but if not declared they may use it against you in a claim.
If everything is declared and you have an accident you’re covered.
The only things I’ve found to raise the price of insurance has been such as mechanical ( brakes especially) or engine mods and to be fair some companies don’t raise your policy as they feel if you’ve spent x amount you will look after it.
Just never expect to get what “ you “ feel your motor is worth as that will probably never happen —— modding is a labour of love at a cost lol

Makes sense, thanks, will go with declare everything I know about approach if there are any known mods.

Got the added complication of not having a policy for a while, so probably going to be an expensive first year 😉

Yea you need to declare anything, some companies will not insure any vehicles that have been modified in any way if you do a comparison and end up insured through one of them they will decline your insurance in it's entirety, I was reading about a fishing guy who had put a seat in the back of his van for when he was away fishing, made a claim think it was stolen, recovered damaged, they declined it, he went to insurance ombudsman and they ruled in favour of insurance company.
