Insuring your Elgrand

I’m with Adrian Flux and trying to do a mid policy change from my Transit as a converted campervan to the Elgrand has pushed the annual premium from £800 to £1500.

I won't use Adrian flux out of principle, had a Toyota Surf (Japanese import) insured with them 3 months and the cylinder head went, bought a Chrysler PT cruiser to put me on, they couldn't insure that because it wasn't modified, so I said ok I'll put alloys on it cos it needs a tyre, oh no now you have told us its not modified we won't insure it, we can cancel and charge you what amounted to 75% charges, and then insure you again on another policy at the same price as the Toyota for the next nine months, told them to stuff it and cancelled, never will use them again, I'll walk first.

Looks like the silly coilovers are the problem. Without them I'm getting quotes at £750 which isn't bad for where I live. Looks like I'm adding a return to standard suspension on the job list.

Just got our new Elgrand home yesterday.

We used to own a Mazda Bongo before and we've been insured through Adrian Flux throughout the ownership of the Bongo.

So we went back to them for the Elgrand and boy did they give us a nasty surprise, to the point we'd thought we'd made a huge mistake.
As we all do now I powered on the monitor and looked for an owners forum.
Your info on the insurance was invaluable, followed your instructions and Greenlight Insurance were absolutely brilliant. Great price, helpful and friendly.

Oh and get this Adrian FLux now wants to charge us for ending the policy on the Bongo. I've never had that before, every insurance policy I have ended early has paid us back for the unused term of the policy. @*&%$%£*!!!!

See my post two up, Adrian Flux are the worst car insurance I have ever used, with Admiral my Elgrand insurance is cheaper than the Kia I also use.

F##k em springs to mind, no loyalty anymore

AF used to be good but I had to change from them after they increased my insurance 50%.

Insurance is always a hot topic of conversation, especially when it comes to Japanese Imports.

As a general rule of thumb, there should be no real "premiums" for insuring the Elgrand over any other vehicle in it's class. The problem you may find is that insurance databases are not always as up to date as they should be when it comes to imports.

Typically, you want to be going for a Japanese Import Specialist insurer. These are usually the best in terms of keeping up to date with import vehicles on their database. They will also, USUALLY, be the most competitive.

Do NOT bother wasting time with comparison sites for your Elgrand... they will throw up ridiculous quotes and just be a waste of your time. Go to insurance companies directly.

My general advice to anyone who asks is to follow the below:

Contact Adrian Flux. Give them all your details and get a quote - I would not recommend taking a policy out with Flux due to the level of complaints I have seen/heard from people in the event of a claim. But, this is just hearsay really, so it's up to you if you choose to insure with them.

Ring Sky Insurance, give them all your details and the quote you got from Flux, they will, most of the time, beat it.

Ring GreenLight Insurance (our Insurance partner), give them your details, give them your cheapest quote, and then tell them you are a member of ElgrandOC to get your 15% discount. If they cannot beat the quote from Sky, go with them.

There are a lot of members who are more than happy, or have had their best quotes from some of the normal, big name insurance companies such as Direct Line, Admiral, Aviva etc. So if you really want to get a comparison across the board, ring some known insurance companies too and see if they can be competitive or not. But I would advise you ring the three Jap Import Specialist insurers listed above first, and then go to the big known insurance companies.

There is a whole different routine you will have to take to insure a FRESH IMPORT that has NOT BEEN REGISTERED. You need to insure on the Chassis number etc, and things are more complicated overall... so if you are looking at insuring an Elgrand off the boat to get in home for MOT etc, then please check in the "Import Experiences" forum section to see what others have done.

Hope this helps.
I got mine with Sterling. They insist on giving them a mileage tho, cos if u go over that:
They cancel ur cover.
Comforting to know!

Adrian Flux are by far the worst insurance company going

Cheap though, and some people like that

Mine's £276 with DirectLine, an awfully expensive amount to pay for insurance, but I guess it is what it is

Are we getting these cheap prices with declared mods and street parking in a city?

I agree. Used to love what Adrian Flux offered for modified vehicles but the prices keep going up despite my considerable no claims discount and age also going up.

Got a quote through direct line £253.12, will be happy with that
Sounds good, thank you for the helpful info. Mine is currently insured with Admiral and Sky high.!

Just checked my most recent premiums, they are £78 per month so I need to shop around this time!

i have just switched to Admiral, somewhat cheaper than last year. FWIW, i wanted to give Green;light a try but they dont have an online system and by the time they called me back, i had pushed the button on Admiral. Will try them again next year.

I just did our Elgrand with admiral with mods for £438 two named drivers and as a brand new policy 😀
That’s good to know thanks. They are shockers aren’t they!! 🙄

Okay, thanks for the info. The thing with the insurers is that they don’t seem interesting in incentivising you to stay by lowering the price to a new-policy level. I did make a bodywork claim though 2 years ago, so maybe that’s why my premiums are higher…
