Insuring your Elgrand

Insurance is always a hot topic of conversation, especially when it comes to Japanese Imports.

As a general rule of thumb, there should be no real "premiums" for insuring the Elgrand over any other vehicle in it's class. The problem you may find is that insurance databases are not always as up to date as they should be when it comes to imports.

Typically, you want to be going for a Japanese Import Specialist insurer. These are usually the best in terms of keeping up to date with import vehicles on their database. They will also, USUALLY, be the most competitive.

Do NOT bother wasting time with comparison sites for your Elgrand... they will throw up ridiculous quotes and just be a waste of your time. Go to insurance companies directly.

My general advice to anyone who asks is to follow the below:

Contact Adrian Flux. Give them all your details and get a quote - I would not recommend taking a policy out with Flux due to the level of complaints I have seen/heard from people in the event of a claim. But, this is just hearsay really, so it's up to you if you choose to insure with them.

Ring Sky Insurance, give them all your details and the quote you got from Flux, they will, most of the time, beat it.

Ring GreenLight Insurance (our Insurance partner), give them your details, give them your cheapest quote, and then tell them you are a member of ElgrandOC to get your 15% discount. If they cannot beat the quote from Sky, go with them.

There are a lot of members who are more than happy, or have had their best quotes from some of the normal, big name insurance companies such as Direct Line, Admiral, Aviva etc. So if you really want to get a comparison across the board, ring some known insurance companies too and see if they can be competitive or not. But I would advise you ring the three Jap Import Specialist insurers listed above first, and then go to the big known insurance companies.

There is a whole different routine you will have to take to insure a FRESH IMPORT that has NOT BEEN REGISTERED. You need to insure on the Chassis number etc, and things are more complicated overall... so if you are looking at insuring an Elgrand off the boat to get in home for MOT etc, then please check in the "Import Experiences" forum section to see what others have done.

Hope this helps.
Great info!

I'm getting quotes around the £600 mark Direct Line and Admiral. To be honest it's only £100 more than my current car so not too bothered, and beats the £1k Adrian Flux quoted, even with a phone call they only got it down to £800ish. I can do Direct Line Multicar with our other car for about £1k so that feels ok to me.
Not sure how people get these super low prices! I'm middle aged, married, professional job, years of no claims and it still won't go below £500. Perhaps my street has a bad insurance rep or something??!

It's probably location but its all hidden in their algorithm. I found admiral to be the cheapest for me on multi car (M, 48, street parking, 10k miles business use, high risk area ) but I never paid more than £300 to insure the Elgrand. However. It did have all my no claims on it.

£500 does seem a lot to me, but it's one if those things you can't do much about in the end.

Quick question on insurance...is the removal of the rear cats (or core removal) a modification to be declared when insuring?

I wouldn’t, it’s not a performance or value thing, it’s maintenance.

It's technically illegal to modify or remove emissions control equipment, so probably not a good idea to mention it!

In australia, Elgrand be very pop, have data in most company.

For my US brethren, State Farm was the best company I found for insurance that wasn't a huge hassle.

Any modification should be disclosed to insurance because if they can find any way to say ohhh sorry but we are not paying, they will.

Yes, but removing cats is not something they would understand, as they will probanly refuse to insure if yiu tell them. It's a very grey area legally. You aren't allowed to remove cats. The fact you generally remove secondary ones on Elgrands is justifiable, but as UK cars don't have them an insurer will likely not see the difference .Telling them you have done something technically illegal is asking for trouble.

However, there is hugely more leeway with modifications for imported vehicles as they are not type approved, so yoir insurer doesn't know what a JDM car should have on it, and there is no way of checking what was standard anyway. Nissan UK wont tell them aa they do not support grey imports in any way. You also have no idea if an import was modified in Japan before you imported it anyway, so anything on it could have been done by a previous owner.

Edit: an example, I discovered after buying my Elgrand it had Nismo branded lowered suspension and uprated Anto roll bars. I had disclosed it has aftermarket wheels, as I could see them, but these parts were not listed when I bought it. If they were factory fitted when new then ĺ would assume that isn't a modification. However, if they were dealer fitted or an after sale mod then are they then? As I didn't know, didnt fit them, and no-one could actually prove it either way anyway, I didn't mention them. If someone did the same 'modification' with used parts it would be exactly the same situation, as they could have been factory parts that were not known at purchase.

For anyone who is unlucky enough to have required to claim on insurance for total loss, did the insurer offer a fair valuation? Or would it be advisable to obtain agreed value on any insurance policy since the usual price comparison sites may value these older vehicles poorly?

If in Australia, AAMI or NRMA are decent in terms of price

Very useful information

Looks like the silly coilovers are the problem. Without them I'm getting quotes at £750 which isn't bad for where I live. Looks like I'm adding a return to standard suspension on the job list.

Have you rang them, they rely on people just auto renewing.
Ring them and remind them you have the house too and your not happy, sometimes good results come from a couple of threats to leave

Just renewed mine @ 475€ which is about £412 includes breakdown cover and all the fancy extras.
