Fuel Economy

Not picking fault with anything you've said mate but just using your numbers as an example...

If work were say 21 miles away then on the return trip from work you'd have used 1 gallon, while on the trip there you'd have used 0.778 gallons, so 1.778 gallons total to do 42 miles total, which works out at 23.62 mpg. The reason I'm saying this is because it would be easy to think the total mpg would be the average between 21 and 27mpg which would be 24mpg, whilst really the lowest mpg number has a bigger effect on the overall average than the highest mpg number so the longer term average is usually closer to the low mpg numbers shown by the computer than to the higher numbers.

Short term average readings can be quite a way off long term average readings and can easily be affected by driving uphill/downhill or depend on when the computer was reset, e.g. if work is 100m lower than home then over the full distance from home to work you've effectively driven down a big hill on the way to work, or if the driver gets up to speed then resets the computer the mpg reading won't include the fuel used in getting up to speed, all things that can 'throw the numbers off'.

Of course if start the engine then immediately reset the computer before setting off the computer should be relatively accurate but still if you start using the vehicle for other types of trips including stop/start driving the long term average will probably be quite a lot lower than the average on a decent cruising conditions trip.

Good luck getting the 30. I still haven't memorised where the fuel info is on the Elgrand.
