Fuel Economy

me driving at 70 got around 5.8l/km which is 13.64mpg. i didnt floor it like crazy. wonder if others also have this or is 20mpg only realistic at 55
I get about the same on journeys down to Weymouth which is motorway and A road, my E51 is AWD so an little bit heavier than Rear wheel drive was going to replace front O2 sensors but have not got round to it but I do run LPG so that makes up for it

Our 3.5L petrol Elgrand is a late 2005.
We tend to cruise from Woolpit, Suffolk to Felixstowe between 60 & 65 mph so to avoid being
constantly overtaken by HGVs.
This trip is just 38 miles each way, 85% dual carriageway & mainly level ground.
We only use 97 Octane E10 fuel & I’m very light footed maintaining a constant speed.
The last time I checked we were averaging 24.8mpg, which considering the Elgrand’s weight & size
is good.
Tip - It helps the mpg figures if the tyres are 40psi..

I run at about 40psi and can see 30mpg on an uninterrupted run at about 60mph, the minute you hit stop-start it soon plummets to sub-20mpg. But hey, it's an Elgrand, it's about SMILES per gallon NOT MILES per gallon.....

EDIT: Booting it at the lights DOES NOT help economy, makes me smile though, a lot 🤣

LPG conversion is definitely worth it. It pays for itself in no time with no loss of performance.

Agreed.

I've converted over 800 Elgrands to LPG.

During just the last 4 weeks I have saved £hundreds by running my own Elgrands on LPG.

I don't like running on petrol because it costs a lot more and causes my engine internals and oil to get dirty. LPG is much cleaner burning, better for the engine and better on the pocket. Also LPG is 110 octane and never 'goes off'... it's 110 octane when fresh from the refinery and would be 110 octane even after being left to sit in a tank for 100 years, contains no ethanol and no sulphur.

Evening All,

Today, I did my first journey for work of any significant length to south of Doncaster from Bishop Auckland, so i decided to see what MPG I could achieve, (i don't know how accurate the onboard computer is, did re-set it when I topped up the half full tank with premium petrol this morning before starting out.....) here are my results.

Distance travelled (return trip)........ 309.5 KM = 192.3 miles.... . got 10.8 km/l which works out to 30.5 mpg, was averaging 60 to 65 mph (with a few "blasts" past the "middle lane hoggers" 😒 - (well!!! you got to, havent't you! 😉), using less than half a tank! ........... pretty pleased with hitting 30 mpg!! 😍

Cheers Maurice

Must have had a good tail wind!

Expect poor economy. Really. I'm not gonna lie to you.

They are a 2 tonne bus with pretty appalling aerodynamics and large engines. They are designed for comfort and luxury, not for cheap motoring.

As a brief run down:

E50 QD32 3.2 Diesel - 26mpg average. 18mpg around the doors. 36mpg on long runs at 55.

E50 ZD30 3.0 Diesel - 28mpg average. 20mpg around the doors. 40mpg on long runs at 55.

E50 VG33 3.3 V6 - 18mpg average. 14mpg around the doors. 28mpg on long runs at 55.

E50 VQ35 3.5 V6 - 16mpg average. 12mpg around the doors. 28mpg on long runs at 55.

E51 VQ25 2.5 V6 - 22mpg average. 18mpg around the doors. 32mpg on long runs at 55.

E51 VQ35 3.5 V6 - 20mpg average. 16mpg around the doors. 30mpg on long runs at 55.

These are worst case scenarios. If you are getting less than this, you have a problem (either with your engine or your right foot). If you go into buying an Elgrand with these figures in mind, then you won't be swearing 6 months down the line when you are on first name terms with every petrol station attendant within 30 miles of your house.
Yup, first thing I noticed lol

I found the best economy is to be found driving "her" Pulsar :)
There was a special on today so I threw some 100 octane in, realised the last time I put petrol in was in June!
Runs really well on the 100 as I'm sure you can imagine! Oh I know, it's just 95 with tons of ethanol added, but definitely won't be knocking any time soon

If you've got a chip conversion to MPH on the speedo (as I have) does that mean that the calculations the car is doing in terms of fuel economy are also in miles rather than kilometres?

My stated KM/L are woeful (around 4.5) but the needle doesn't seem to be dropping as fast as I would expect for the stated atrocious economy. I was wondering if the infotaintment screen is actually reading in miles per litre rather than kilometres? Anyone know?

I think you will find that the chip only affects the cluster. The info screen has separate data feed from the BCM.

If you reset the reading in the info screen menu it will start again with the average consumption calculations. With normal driving it should settle around the 7km/l mark.
