Something I just thought of...the technical threads are pretty disorganised - there is a lot of stuff in the How To guides that could be in the technical information section and vice versa. And of course there are gems of knowledge scattered everywhere and many are responses that really ought to have their own entry in tech info/how to. Loads of ICE stuff everywhere.

I'm thinking Tech Info and How To could be read-only sections for most users with entries added by nominated experts. And Tech Info should only contain tech info, and How To should only contain weather predictions (haha). Make these parts authoritative. Categorise them? Electrical, engine etc. It would be great to be able to go to these areas and quickly find the info you're looking for - then you wouldn't need to use the search function. This might take some work but it could be done in increments.

There could be other sections within technical area for questions and discussion, tech-related gossip etc 😁

Some kind of standardised form of titling would also be great. There are lots of titles like Hooray I Finally Did It or Driving Me Crazy or Help Please etc etc which are not very useful - they may contain useful info but who would bother clicking on them to find out?

Also, I very much agree with LPGC. I do think that a few tech information sections could contain the high value content that drew many of us here in the first place, and that should be ring-fenced, managed, curated etc only by people who really know their stuff. That would be a really useful change. But everything else should be easygoing 😁

Hello total newbie here, getting “brassed off” with the constant “must have 10 posts or pay” each and every time in go to look for something ! This group was suggested by a member when I posted on Facebook when I bought my first Elgrand (last week) as been the best, but hey let us look and “try before we buy”, I can understand the need to raise revenue but let us look first and cut us off after “a sample” of then either pay or lock us out until a set a mount of posts.

It’s about building a community, not raising revenue. Saying “hello” in a post is easy and, because we’re a welcoming bunch of loons, there’ll be a load who say “hello” back. Thank each of them and you’ll have your 10 posts in - and that’ll open ALL the forum without you having to pay anything at all. Those of us who’ve paid did so because we felt it was worth it, not because we were forced into it.

1. Ten posts gets people interested and avoids the numpties. Not hard to get there
2. Subscription pays for site, marquees, equipment for shows etc. It doesn't go in pockets.
3. There is general chat and technical sections. If you do not like chat just use the tech bit. Club may have started as technical know how but has turned into a friendly personable meeting place for owners who get together and share. There is a "watch - unwatch" option
4. Maybe the tech stuff with main titles like Cats, Engine etc.could be like a library, have subtitles etc and locked off. Get rid of the waffle in between and any additions to be approved by admin? A lot of work to troll through them though...
5. Cannot fault the club and admin that give their free time to make it work! Change what you feel is necessary

I have to agree with keeping the 10 post rule, even though watching someone spamming there way to 10 is sometimes infuriating,

as for off topic banter which can result in the so called highjacking of a thread, well for me that's the Hart and sole of the forum,
I don't think it should have its own section as it's normally a spontaneous/of the moment sort of thing that comes out of nowhere,

Admin do a fantastic job, I have seen the Stanley's and the pineapples of this life come and swiftly go, with a big hammer up their arse,
what with organising shows, meets, Christmas meal, club calendar, and keeping an eye on well over 8000 members, and all this in their precious spare time,,, outstanding truly outstanding,,,

I'am coming up on two years of owning my one, and this club and the forum community/family have been invaluable to me in so many ways during my first JDM journey,,

The ten post rule allows people to read a lot of what's on here and it "gentles" them into the general ethos of the club so that they have a good idea of what we are all about and when they get to ten posts they are up to speed and can access all they want. We also get a good idea of what they are like too. Then they can decide whether to pay £12 to help to finance the club or not.
Which reminds me - have I paid mine?
It's difficult to think of a better alternative.
I love the forum as it is and have nothing but praise and admiration for the mods and members as it makes being an Elgrand owner even more of a pleasure.

Deffo keep the 10 post rule , strange how some find it so frustrating, it’s as simple as saying
“ Hello” “Welcome” to other newbies & “Thank you” to those that welcome you ...
As @George322 says we all get an idea of each other by our posts , on the other hand some people just want instant information & don’t wish to socialise with a bunch of strangers !
Nicely put @Russ1 & @George322 👍

Well put George

You need something to limit the number of one-post members and stopping the technical threads being overwhelmed with repetitive questions. I don't know if the 10 post rule is the best way to do this (maybe it is) but it does seem to work. And it's not THAT hard to get to 10 posts even without spamming.

For me it was good to chat with people - I could see that this was an active and friendly club (pity I'm in another hemisphere but oh well) and that there were many users here who really know their stuff. Then I got to the technical section and that's an absolute gold mine for people like me who want to know as much as possible about what they've bought. If I recall correctly, I purchased a year's membership the next day. Money very well spent! My only regret is that I didn't find this place sooner.

This is such a great forum and is part of what makes owning an Elgrand so special. There are always things that can be improved, but it should be by evolution rather than revolution.

Keep up all the good work all of you admin volunteers.

£12 a bargain & should be advertised as such. £1 per month for all the info on here is proper value. Reminds me I must pay mine.

I know some posts are a bit near the knuckle but please, please please don't stop the banter & go all PC on us. That's all I get everytime I turn the TV on these days

£12 is an absolute bargain for all of the help, advice and information.

For me, being a total petrol head and the ownership experience of a car, is largely down to being part of a club or forum.

This owners club is by a long chalk, the best I have ever experienced.

Everyone is so helpful and friendly and nothing is too much trouble.

So I owe a big thank you to all members and especially the fine people who run this fantastic club 🙏

I have been meaning to post something about this for a while, so this request from admins has been a good prompt.

Finding technical information on something can take a long time on the forum. As has been mentioned, the search function doesn't always work that well. There are gems of information all over the forum, however they are slotted in between various bits of discussion, opinion and banter.

I first joined about 6 months before buying an Elgrand, which was just over a year ago. I used the forum a lot to get information and arm myself with the knowledge I'd need to own an imported vehicle.

I was always surprised that the Wiki that is linked to on the ElgrandOC home page wasn't being used more. I've just checked and it looks like that has been removed as the link takes you back to the home page. Having an organised and well researched resource would be brilliant.

Would it be possible to bring the Wiki back? We could then start a list of facts about the Elgrand. Things like the specification of wheels, what size bulbs a particular fitting takes, locations of fuse boxes, what oil is used. This would really help everyone, new and existing members to find things more easily.

There are of course sometimes differences between years and models, so the page would be organised to list each variation. This might not start out as a complete list, however over time details would be added.

Where each page/section would show the facts, there could also be a section marked as an opinion, where some addition information could be added. Each page/section could have a supporting forum discussion page. Here members could suggest revisions and improvements to the page.

I would be very happy to contribute things and help organise the information, as well as create graphics and diagrams.

I'm a newbie EOC member and was persuaded by the knowledge of the forum to pay the £12 for the year.

The site is well run, active and newcomers are warmly greeted.

Lot's of excellent suggestions with "evolution not revolution" being a good point to emphasise.

For future reference is there a possibility of stream lining EOC Merchandise into an EOC Shop area with items displayed with prices, stock levels and a payment protocol?

I don't know the technical name for it but would a "search tag box" on the forum front page be useful?

So when someone puts in a search term, it gets recorded and over time you will get an update of the most searched words showing as the "largest" word in a "search tag box".

It could assist with newbies & more seasoned members in finding topics that are frequently searched with links to relevant posts containing the desired info.

Great ideas there LawLoz 👍

I would also add that I find the ability to "Watch" and to "Tag" posts/threads very helpful, maybe this could be highlighted (if not already), as it gives each individual member personal responsibility for collating information to refer to later.

Any posts that I've read on various topics, I've tagged them accordingly so I have a future reference and less need to repeat already answered questions.

So my 2cents too for what it's worth.

The forum itself, I think it's great as is, yes there's a lot of banter and the search is a pain but like @Lpgc said earlier there's a big risk of changing things too much. Except for the search, if that can be improved then great.

I think the one thing that will make a huge difference, and probably solve half the problems which seems to be related to people trying to find technical information, is improving the wiki. @neebster hit the nail on the head, if we had a good, reliable, wiki for all the basic technical info that would really help people out a lot.

I appreciate the challenge of the wiki though. The very nature of a wiki relies on the community collaboratively updating the content, and even though we have some fantastic subject matter experts on here there's always going to be differencing in opinions on a few of the things. But for the basic info - cats, bulbs, fuses, tyres, oil, even ICE and dare I say it - oil, etc - the wiki will be perfect for. I think it's getting these subject matter experts to contribute that's the challenge. Is there anything that can be done to encourage these guys to sit down and actually take the time out to update the wiki?
