Van drivers are often 'on a mission' because they want to get from A to B to do some work at B and hoping to get an early finish. Some of them sometimes seem out of their depth / comfort zone drivng vans if they're more used to the Fiesta they drive the rest of the time. A lot of van drivers are pushy on the road so are breaking the 'do not try to dominate on the road' highway code rule.

That said, there's a balance between being cautious and making progress. When you're learning you're expected to need to be more cautious / err on the side of cautious until you've gained enough experience to be cautious and make good progress at the same time. Maybe the van driver or other following drivers would think you were being over cautious to the extent of not increasing safety but not making decent progress, not knowing that you were getting used to driving an automatic.

We would fail a basic learner driving test by doing something unsafe or to a far lesser extent by not making good enough progress. But would fail an advanced driving test by not being polished at pre-empting hazard situations and by not making good enough progress, the advanced driver might be expected to make better progress than the basic learner while at the same time being safer than the basic learner.

I've been in cars with drivers who drive a manual car OK and smoothly but drive an automatic a lot worse and a lot less smoothly. E.g. Drive like other drivers and passengers would hope and expect they would drive a manual, enter corners at a speed that they can keep a bit of power on going around the corner to better plant the vehicle and lessen that sideways push in the seat G force feeling but not anticipate the lesser engine braking in an auto so enter a corner a bit quick then either coast around it or brake mid corner, etc. Random increases / decreases of speed, etc. But the real eye opener is when it comes to manouvering... They could probably do a 3 or 5 point turn on a hill no problem and never overshoot how far they intended to move in a manual, never do the rolling in the wrong direction thing. But put them in an automatic and they're all over the place, overshooting how far they intended to move and rolling in the wrong direction. Even more 'fun' if the automatic has a foot parking brake instead of a hand parking brake or if the parking brake doesn't work properly.

I tell people who are new to slushbox automatics that if they don't feel they have the same level of vehicle control in an automatic compared to driving a manual they should try left foot braking in an automatic. Then even if the parking brake is a bit week they can prevent the rolling around during manouveres on a hill with left foot on the brake while applying a bit of throttle. It's another trick in the box for smooth driving and sporty driving too.

An automatic gearbox is supposed to take some of the work out of driving but to a lot of people it seems an automatic gearbox makes driving more work because coming from manual gearboxes they assume they should handle the brake and accelerator pedal pretty much the same as they do in manual cars except they don't need to press a clutch pedal... when they might be better off handling the brake and accelerator pedal a bit differently in the automatic if they try it and practice it, but they never try or practice it so just assume they will always have less control in an auto compared to a manual.
There was a time when slow drivers were pulled over and made to wait as the commuters made a dash for the Mersey tunnel at clocking off time. I drive my motorhome annoyingly slowly round sharp bends and roundabouts because a) the front wheels foul the arches (new springs needed methinks) and b) it lurches like the Queen Mary. I annoy the fuck out of myself but I always give the impatient the opportunity to pass the moment the road ahead is clear.
When my boot is on the other foot and I'm behind such a vehicle, I bide my time, no rush, what's the hurry? Then again I'm not an Amazon driver on 60p a parcel....

And if I appear impatient in my hgv it's because if I go more than 30 sec over my drive time or working time I can lose my job or and be heavily fined

Just see on my news feed, Meet iris, England's new 2 legged delivery robot. However I read it as Elgrands new 2 legged etc. Is that a sign of obsession?

Why the hell is this made with a floppy handle??1000025580.jpg

It’s designed to help you spill the product, then you need to go and buy more….. clever marketing ploy really.

They do it with large milk cartons
too.

I’m sat here contemplating self harm because I changed the Plug on my favourite petrol lawn mower and for no apparent reason whatsoever it runs like a bag of spanner’s.( it ran OK beforehand )
Now, any normal person would put the other plug back in and see how it ran…. But no, not me, I convinced myself it was fuel related - so took the carb to bits.
Built it back up, stayed the same, it was at this point I was staring at the wretched thing on my bench and I noticed this warning sign, what the fuck does that mean?
Because my train of though was broken by this warning sticker I decided to look at the plug, that’s when I realised the plug cap was not clipped to the plug, so the contact was intermittent as it revved… like it was hunting.
Anyway - the mower is fine but that warning label is annoying me.

Just an update for those petrol mower anoraks amongst you…. The plug cap was loose but that was not the issue.
The issue was the condenser lead rubbing on the fan case and intermittently shorting out.

What an absolute 7W47.

Oh to answer Patrick’s question- the warning signs are on the lawnmower 🫣

I can post again! Nothing to do with the forum, apparently some thieving B+++++ds broke into the phone box at the top of the village and stole the wiring, full village plus possible other villages in the area effected, no phones (landline) or broadband all day yesterday, all up now they must have worked all night. It just shows you how reliant we are on the internet and how fragile the system is.

Yeah, but when you call to report it and get stuck in a queue, how many times do you hear the message saying it's quicker to go online?

Scum.
Hope it's sorted for you soon.
