Yes, especially when they sell you an Elgrand for £13K, buy it back off you a year later, just after you serviced it, for £7.2K....to sell it again for £13K the day after 👍

On the bird thing, a few years ago the Chinese had a "directive" that the sparrows etc were eating all the grain so they had a short period where they kept them flying until they were exhausted and then when they landed they killed them, no grain eaten - great result, a year after they hardly got any crops in due to the insects that ate them, all life has a balance and the sooner we stop messing with it the world will be all the better for it, the problem is too many humans, - maybe we should keep them running around until they are exhausted !!!

I agree.

The system is broken, some say we need more and more humans to grow the economy or pay for pensions of previous generations but more humans is contrary to other stuff aimed for such as preventing climate change.
 
I don't know why the "business model" is continuous growth, nothing perpetually keeps growing, if you have a decent standard of living and a company makes a profit and pays its workers why should it have to keep getting bigger to stay in business, greed is the problem, the poorest countries are often the happiest.

The UK habit of paying without question is what drives the prices up, I'm originally from Yorkshire and you know what the definition of a yorkshire man is - a frugal scotsman! no offence meant to any other yorkshire men or scotsmen
 
Richard Heinberg's book "The End of Growth" is a good read.
My argument against constant "Growth" is that it only considers wealth as important. Happiness/contentment doesn't seem to figure much in the "Growth" equation. We are all just "Consumers" and irrelevant other than to do what we have been socially engineered to do - consume more.

Not sure. The general consensus when I was on the back end of 'growth' was kind of get over it, that's business mate. So the model must be good.

In the 70s there were books saying in the future people wouldn't work as many hours because there'd be more automation and robots doing stuff for us and plenty people including my dad believed that kind of thing. At that time the average family could have one adult go to work, other stay at home to be the homemaker, mortgage got paid and a car on the drive, averagely well off. Far from less work in the future it turned out there'd be more work in the future lol.
 
The End of Growth book looks at when "Peak" everything is reached and asks how we can continue to "Grow" the economy when there's nothing left - or what is left is so scarce that the price of obtaining it puts it out of reach.
The usual answer is "Technology" - leave it to the scientists to find alternatives - but even the cleverest of the scientists can't make something out of nothing.

What always gets me is businesses "forecast" say a 5 million profit, but then only make 3 million, so that's called a 2 million loss, but they've still made 2 million, how can it be a loss, they're never happy, then the first thing they do is lay off the workers and cause more misery and give themselves a bonus because they have "saved" money, at the expense of jobs.
