What do you have on your TV AUX

It is but not my idea. There is a thread where a member used the built-in Elgrand ariels and that gave my the idea but I used the ariel that came with the unit. Not such a neat solution but you know it’s gonna work.
I think the USB socket is for a big memory stickso you can record a programme. I don’t think you can download from another device and expect the tuner to play it. I reckon the HDMI will take a firestick, now tv, apple thing tho.
Let me know when you test it. I have a sneaky suspicion that HDMI might be an output rather than an input which would scupper my plans...

Google chromecast for me, basically turns it into a smart TV with a remote. Considering one of the cheap gaming emulating hdmi sticks as another upgrade in the future..
I've got one of the gaming sticks. I don't use it as much as I'd like to as I tend to be driving, but the lads I drove up to my mate's stag do enjoyed mario kart all the way up the M1...

Many have tried and given up. The aux in is a composite signal and remains so all the way to the screen.
And not needed, the sound quality is very good in the Elgrand despite its age, and that goes for the image quality of the screens if you have a good clean composite video signal (i.e. not a cheap hdmi to av box, but a good one)

I think my issue with the quality is, if the text is small, you just can't see it, it's just too fuzzy, example Google maps... when searching for a destination, the text is so fuzzy you really have to struggle to read it. Where as if you compare it to the quality of the text displayed on the actual head unit, its far far superior. SD just isn't up to the job for small text.

With regards to the HDMI to AV converter do you have any recommendations? When you search for them, more or less the same one always pops up, and you're right it isn't great quality... (this one: https://amzn.eu/d/1aIeF4M )

I did find this one as well, which I thought looked a better quality product, but it was worse ( this one: https://amzn.eu/d/63mK9Yv )

In my opinion the quality of the rca is awful... but then again I work in film & television so I suppose I have high standards....

I actually have the second one... well looks the same but not that branding. Imo it's better than the first type you see everywhere.

Agree on text quality, but I use a car based launcher on my android box and increased the system font size slightly.

Yep, if you are in the TV industry, your standards are prob a little high...😀

I am now using a DVB tuner and it is easy for me to change from the lowest resolution to the highest HD, way beyond the capabilities of the screens and it doesn’t seem to make any noticeable difference. Small text like at the bottom of a news programme is unreadable. However, it is better and actually readable on the drop down screen. I don’t know if this is becuase the rear system/ screen is better quality or whether front is just worn out.
I suggest that spending more on the converter will make no difference. I have tried cheap and expensive and both were same.

The quality of the cables can make a big difference. And of course the length of the run.

Changing the subject slightly but staying on the aux input theme, I installed the Canm8 cruise control over the Easter weekend and whilst working around the fuse box area I noticed what looks like another aux input plug? Dose the Elgrand have 2? One in the front and one in the back or was it something else?

I took a gamble on this one - https://amzn.eu/d/1aIeF4M

It doesn't work, I'm not surprised though, it's very cheap. Can't tell if it's getting power or not but not really inclined to spend much time fiddling with it. I've seen one on Amazon which someone has confirmed working in an Elgrand in one of the reviews, can anyone verify? I'm a little wary because it is also very cheap! But seems like at least one person has it working in an e51 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09WDMWMJG/

The first one should work if set to ntsc... maybe it's faulty. I have one and works fine.

I second this, the first one should work. Yes it's cheap so it could be faulty, I have the same one. Make sure its set to ntsc, (they do work set to pal just black and white and very distorted) usually if its working you'll get colour bars and a no signal sign.. if your not seeing that then there's likely a problem with it.

I will say tho not sure if it's the box or just the rca in general, but there is a bit of interference with that first box, on blacks you can see some noise.

If you do get the second one. Let me know what the quality is like... if it sounds better than my one I might upgrade.

Thanks Bog and Jimmy, good info, I might fiddle with it just a bit then if you've had success with that same one. I'll have a different cable to power it with lying around somewhere, and the AV cable is pretty aged as well so worth trying another.

If I can't get it going I'll try the other one and report back. I'm not expecting much from either in fairness, in terms of picture quality, but would be handy to be able to put a film on.

I love these cars have an AUX IN for the TV tuner. The possibilities are endless.

What do you all have running through it?

I've experimented with a few things so far & these are my findings.

I've never liked Proprietary navagation systems, you always have to pay for updates and your so restricted on what they display regarding speed cameras etc... so Google maps & waze was the way I wanted to go anyway.

So my first mod was to disable the TV aux turning off when moving/handbrake released. Once that was sorted, My first attempt was a HK ONE Android box. I connected a U Blox USB GPS device to it & an air mouse for control and it worked really well with all android apps.

The most annoying thing with this system was, I powered the android box from the 12v supply in the boot, so I would plot my journey on maps, start the engine, and immediately reset he box because the supply dies when you hit the starter!

My next idea was to add a battery buffer to stop it restarting every time i started, I experimented with a few batteries. Annoyingly power banks didn't allow "pass through power" so if they were connected to a charge source they wouldnt output any power. So that won't work.

My solution was a UPS device that was designed for 12v Internet routers.

Unfortunately when charging from the 12v socket and outputting power at the same time to the android box, it would create the most awful interference in the screen. So again no joy.

So now ive currently switched to using an old galaxy S9 with a HDMI output in to the aux. The phone charges on the 12v output and uses its internal battery to stay alive when you start the engine do no waiting for Android to boot.
Hi can you point me in the right direction for the handbrake mod, is it on the Nav / DVD player

Yes, the DVD/Nav unit, series 1 at the bottom of the centre console and series 2 in the glovebox.

Thanks it’s an s2 , what wires / plugs do I need to modify ?

There's a 24 pin plug on the rear and you need to ground two of the pins as in the pic. Or if you want a plug and play solution....

Wow thanks that’s really useful
Cheers

I have setup a Raspberry Pi 3b with Batocera (Games Emu) and Kodi as a music player.

On car ignition the RPI boots up direct into Kodi and auto plays a random Party playlist which displays via the RCA socket feed

I have adjusted the fonts in Kodi and Batocera to account for the poor screen resolution, however I could not figure out how to bypass the park brake!
