"Tractor" diary. Elgrand from Siberia. E50.

Some one I know who lives in Zimbabwe buys Kerosene delivered in to a 1000 litre bunded container, then adds 5% of telus32 hydraulic oil and puts it in his diesel X5 - he says it runs better than it does on pump diesel.

He has not had the X5 for too long but he ran a 3.2 Pajero for 130,000 miles with no ill effects.

Prices change all the time with Boilerjuice giving an up to date price - 40p a litre in Zimbabwe apparently.

Obviously you can’t use it in your car over here as it is illegal.
I ran five sprinter 312vans each averaging around 400miles each day on recycled veg oil without any problems ..those 5 pot 2.9 engine's are the best Merc ever made they all did over a million miles each with regular oil and filter changes ..the government don't care what you run on providing you pay the correct fuel tax on what you do and a explanation note in each cab incase they got fuel checked by ministry..never any problems... can't run modern units with fancy electrics on the though

I would recommend buying a 3.2 diesel, not a 3.0.
3.2 is a cast iron tractor, simple and reliable like an AK-47. Any problems with the 3.2 are only related to the wiring, the mechanical part is eternal.
3.0 is certainly progressive, but has a bad reputation, both on Elgrands and on Patrols.
Yeah it’s 3.2 that I have on the radar.

My only concern is the drivetrain/transmission as I would probably be spending time again restoring everything I can.

Also noticed the wheel are a bit like typical 4x4 with 6x139.1(5.5”) pcd, unlike the later 5x114.3(4.5”)

Also, are there any service manuals for qd32 or e50 for that matter?

The transmission is almost eternal, you just need to change the oils. The rear suspension is very strong. MacPherson in front, in my opinion, not a very good idea for such a heavy bus. But...
Yes, a typical 4x4, since structurally it is a Nissan Terrano, but a bus.I have a manual, but it is in Russian.

I have found some Terrano service manuals with QD/TD engine this morning and they seem to be useful. There are section regarding tolerances/torque spec etc. Piston rings, valves… so far looking good.

I might give you a shout for it if I’m stuck on anything, my wife learned russian and I kind of know few words.

Can see the engine was used on forklifts too hahaha.

Here is a link to a book on Elgrand in Russian for different engines.
If you have any questions, write to me)

I’ll have a look once I get home, thanks!

A sudden hello)So one early morning I decided to open the radiator cap.. so what??
Oil.. oil everywhere, throughout the entire cooling system. I take out the dipstick to check the oil level - no antifreeze, which is good.
I remember April 24, when I removed the heat exchanger and installed a used one. The problem is in it.I ordered a bunch of gaskets..
I expecting a big job next weekend. We will have to dismantle - starter motor, power steering pump, vacuum pump, fuel injection pump, a bunch of hoses and bolts, pour out all the antifreeze and fill in new)

Definitely not a five-minute job Boris. Have you figured out where/how the oil got into the cooling system?
This is a heat exchanger or, in other words, an oil cooling radiator, there are gaskets that harden and crumble over time. The oil pressure is higher than the pressure in the cooling system and, as a result, the oil gets into the cooling system. And since the oil is lighter than the antifreeze, the oil rises to the surface, which can be seen by looking into the radiator.

Oil hello!
So.. The gaskets arrived.
I drove the tractor into the garage.
Winter has come:
I dismantled the vacuum pump, power steering pump, starter motor, fuel injection pump.
Installed new gaskets
Installed the fuel injection pump according to the marks. I adjusted the injection advance angle using a dial indicator. The Bible says 0.275 +/- 0.02 mm. I set it to 0.28mm.
I filled in the antifreeze and bled it according to the book.

Good work, as you know from my earlier posts Im not a big fan of working on Diesel pumps.

Why is it all the big jobs present themselves when its Minus Baltic ?

Crispy........

I also ask myself this question.. I also don’t like dealing with a diesel pump, but what can I do, I have to drive) I’m looking at the dark side, towards gasoline engines.. but a gasoline Elgrand, only if it’s 51.. otherwise, perhaps an Isuzu Bighorn 3.2 or 3.5 - square, practical, good.

Keep going Boris 💪

Great work as always Boris.
You work miracles with your Elgrand.
Most over here would have been scrap long ago.

Nривет Boris,
Why wouldn't you consider a gasoline E50?
I am a dieselman). The purring of the engine, the noise of the gears. Life is felt. Steam locomotive power from low revs. Well, and fuel consumption. The efficiency of a diesel engine is much greater than that of a gasoline engine.
