My tailgate shocks feel pretty week. I'm sure they will give up soon. Someone told me before I can get shocks that will pop stronger. And I am looking for roof basket that attaches to the attachment points already in the E51. Could someone please point out where on eBay can I get those? Thank you in advance.

As for tailgate struts 'JDM Car Parts' do them (have fitted myself) Gary at JDM is really handy to get parts from, he's currently sold out but here's the link https://jdmcarparts.co.uk/products/...010-heavy-duty-high-lift-tailgate-struts-pair

This is the spec for a higher stronger pop. You can probably find a supplier local to you.

There is no particular part number as you specify your own dimensions and gas pressure.

I'm so sorry but I don't know what is the OEM length and pressure of the E51's tailgate shocks
 
These are the numbers. 850N is the pressure, 350-400 is the length of the two parts of the strut, so 750mm total. 850N is a bit high for a standard tailgate, you might be better off with 800N unless you have a rack pernanently fitted.

Note. How and where the gas struts arrest the opening tailgate is imperative.

If the arrest is too late the tailgate will stop violently - also if the arrest is too early you will be standing waiting for it to open.
 
Is there any other adjustment or lubrication that needs to be routinely done on the hinges?

I replaced mine with a set of these not long after buying the car (which was less than 6 months ago):

For Nissan Elgrand E51 Heavy Duty Tail Gate Boot Struts 2002-2010. These are upgraded heavy duty struts that give an extra 20cm/8 inch lift to the tailgate. They are a direct fit with no modifications required. PART NUMBER: E51TGS.

They claim to be a) heavy duty and b) 8 inches extra lift, but as far as I can tell, they aren't either - I still need to manually push the tailgate up to get it to move the last 8 inches or so of opening, and even then, I would estimate the clearance between the ground and the bottom of the tailgate door is no more than 5 foot 9 or so (which isn't great when I'm 6 foot 2).

My car has new heavy duty rear shocks and springs so it's not a saggy rear end affecting the tailgate height - just seems not to want to open as far as it ideally (or theoretically) should.

Should I just bin these struts and get the ones from JDM? Or are there any other points I should be looking at first?

I can definitely vouch for JDM, much stronger, they stop with damping just before full extension to not top out as mentioned above and definitely lift it higher, I can now stand underneath and I'm 6 foot. Lestempy is ALWAYS good for information too.
 
Going to spring (ba-dum-tsh) for a set of those and take this as another lesson in "buy cheap, buy twice" I think...
