Oh the shame…..STARTER MOTOR related

I rebuilt my old starter and found the two motor bearings to be fine, the brushes x4 were half worn and the contacts on the motor were black - I cleaned all contacts with wire wool.

I think the solenoid was the fault, as the plunger would not fire every time when hooked it to a battery.

After opening and cleaning the plunger and bore with wire wool then lubricating - It fired every time.

So I replaced the brush collar in the starter with a new one and cleaned everything and now I have a good genuine Nissan starter to put in my ‘just in case drawer’.

Some of my photos disappeared- but you get the idea.
👍

Edited to add…

In several places the internal parts were stamped MITSUBISHI as is the id sticker - a bit odd.

I'm sure Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi are in some form of partnership anyway. Would maybe make sense to share parts?

I've crank started a few Fords in my youth. I had a really old one that only had a 6v battery, and that needed the starting handle nearly every day.
For starter motor solenoid problems I always carried a small hammer to give it a "technical knock".

Job jobbed.

Always disconnect battery for this job.

Easy way to access the starter is to jack up the van and remove the driver side front wheel.

Two main fixing bolts are tight as hell almost crack tight, other than that there is a bit of jiggling but easy enough.

Definitely spins over faster than before, so we shall see how it goes.

I have a refurb kit for the old starter so when I do the job I will post a thread with my findings.
Appreciated mate thank you, put the battery on charge which seems to have got it going, so will see in the morning how that goes reckon a new battery first then if still keeps happening look at the starter motor.

I've just been reading this thread and you saying that on the sticker it says Mitsubishi, I was doing my brakes yesterday and on the brake caliper is a Mitsubishi three triangle symbol. Strange. Maybe Mitsubishi so parts for the Elgrand.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Japan have got their fingers in many pies.

Even this. 👍🏻

It’s got Delica door handles and Pajero drop links…..🫤

Over the last month I might have had similar. OCCASIONALLY when I do the ignition twist to fire up, it done everything the same, but didn't fire up. Try again and fine. It did it today after driving and arriving home. I had to park it back as I had to clean moss off my extension roof. Half hour later I went to start it up and it done that turn over sound, but didn't start. Tried again fine. I actually turned it off and on again twice more as it bugged me, again both time fine. Not the battery as I put it on the ctek charger right away, and that went to 4 dots (80% charge) withing a minute. ANd I'd charged it mid last week too.

Replace the solenoid relay on the starter and it will be like new)I change the solenoid relay on the starter once every 3 years.. Although the starter still has Japanese filling, the relay is already Chinese.. And the question often arises: should I repair it with Chinese spare parts or buy a new Chinese one? I haven't found the answer to this question... yet...
This sounds good. I wonder if my mechanic can do this - will find out soon enough 😄

Great pics - really helpful. 👍
Don't suppose there's a manufacturer / part ref on the solenoid unit itself?
Any pointers for where to get hold of the brush collar for the motor would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Sorry no, can’t remember - I’ve only got those photos of the brush ring nothing else.
