Over the last couple of years I have been contemplating upgrading the sound system in my Elgrand camper and decided that although I would like it to be decent quality I wanted to keep the cost to not that much more than £1000 in total on the build and the only real way to do this was either through using used parts or a combination of new, used and by using some of my home hi-fi stash which I already have which is the way I have gone.

I decided that the best way to do this would be to split the van into 3 zones

1 Driving Zone 2 channel power amp fitted in a centre consul between the front seats and a pair of 6.5 inch 3 way coaxial front door speakers decided against going with component speakers to keep the cost down although might upgrade later but decided that as the speakers I have bought were only £20 for the pair would not be too much to lose if I did decide to upgrade in future

2 Living Zone 4 channel power amp and a pair 5 1/4 3 way coaxial speakers in rear door speakers, same as the fronts I decided against going with component speakers due to the extra cost as I already had the 5 1/4 Boschmans but may in future upgrade to a pair of the 51/4 Blackface that I am putting in the tailgate zone but will see how I get on first and also a pair of 6x9 4 way way coaxial speakers in the rear camper units plus a mono amp to 8 inch sub fitted in one of the rear bench seats

3 Tailgate Zone 4 channel power amp and 2 pairs of 5 1/4 component speakers, 2 channel power amp in bridged mode to a 12 inch sub in it's own sealed enclosure fitted in one of the rear camper units

Each of these 3 zones to be independent of each other although to keep cost down and also to make the most of the space I have that zones 1 and 2 could be used together to improve the sound if wanted in the Driving zone

I also decided that I would prefer to use Class A/B amps as I prefer the warmer sound and to my ears the more musical sound they produce rather than the Class D found in most modern amps and as far as possible these would be from the same period as my Elgrand and if possible would be of Japanese origin as much as I could

My main criteria has been

Driving zone. Decent quality sound using my existing andriod head unit as a source for casual listening and sat nav use etc but with the ability to also use the living zone in conjunction with the driving zone for more serious listening to music.

Living zone. Good quality sound for use when in the rear part of the camper using a used JVC head unit that I have bought as source with the ability to go loud if wanted to also use with the driving zone to improve the sound and volume in this area.

Tailgate zone Good quality sound also using the same JVC head unit with the ability to go very loud if wanted out the back of the van

Over the last 18 months or so I have been gradually getting the parts I need together as they have came up either on offer or on ebay and have even bought and resold on a Rockford Pickford amp and a Alpine sub at a bit of a profit as I came across parts that I would prefer and thought would suit the build better.

So far I have bought

Driving zone

A used made in Japan Alpine3540 2 channel amp which dates from the early 1990's in unbelievable condition considering it is over 30 years old with just a couple of very minor marks on the casing. it is 35 watts RMS per channel and is very highly rated for its clean and detailed sound.

From what I have read it is quite a warm sounding amp so will use some chord rumour speaker cable which is silver plated that I have in my stash of about 9 metres so hopefully will be enough to brighten it up a bit

A new pair of Bassface 6.5 inch GT- FR635 3 way coaxial speakers which are rated at 70 watts RMS per speaker so should match pretty good with the Alpine amp, these have Neodymium tweeters which again would probably be quite bight so should also work well with the Alpine amp and the Chord Rumour cable

Although the Alpine amp might seem a bit underpowered for these speakers I have read that they typically output more than there rated wattage and as the Bassface have quite a high sensitivity of 90db hopefully they will be a good match and plenty loud enough especially if zone 1 is combined with zone 2

Will use Chord RCA's that I already have in my hi-fi stash to connect to the head units outputs

The amp will be fitted either in or under a centre consul that I have bought for between the front seats dependant on how the height works out on it that I have on the way from Japan

Total cost of the amp and speakers for this zone £60 not including the cost of the rumour speaker cable or the Chord RCA cable's

Living zone

A used Infinity Reference 7541a 4 channel Amp which dates from around 2005 which again is in unbelievable condition considering its age with just a couple of very light scuffs.

This amp has a rated output of 111 watts RMS per channel although from what I have read real world output is more like 120 or 130 watts RMS per channel. Reviews that I have read indicate it has deep bass and a detailed clear powerful sound

1 pair of 6x9 Boschman XLR-9949S 4 way speakers set in the rear camper units. these are rated at 200 watts RMS per speaker and have high sensitivity of 90db

1 pair of 5. 1/4 Boschmann JX-S553 3 way speakers in the rear doors, these are rated at 130 watts RMS per speaker and have a high sensitivity of 92db

The 2 pairs of Boschmans have been carried over from a previous build that I had done in the van and had been bought originally about 6 or 7 years ago as discontinued open box new.

A 8 inch Vibe Slick sub set in one of the rear bench seats rated at 450 watt bought new on offer

a Boss Audio R1100M mono amp in the same bench seat as the Vibe amp which although this is advertised as being over 400 watts RMS from what read it is no where near this and real world output is more like 120 watts RMS which makes it quite underpowered for the 8 inch Vibe Slicks 450 watts RMS but this does not worry me too much as I am not a great lover of bass heavy set ups.

This was also carried over from the previous build

Total cost for this zone has been £260

All of these I have tested and are working fine.

Tailgate zone

2 pairs of Bassface BlackfaceSPL5C.1 These are rated at 200 watts RMS per speaker and have a very high sensitivity of 97db so will go very loud

These are discontinued and being sold at a very good price for there specs.

They have far better crossovers with a high frequency switch than would be normal in there price range

A Shoc Industries 4 channel amp These are a competition SPL amp hand assembled in Taiwan and were vey highly rated in the USA for both there build and sound quality and the power they produce

This amp is rated at 150 watts RMS per channel and should provide plenty of power to the Blackface speakers

I got this amp for a very good price on e-bay as it was a over £450 amp when it was new in 2016. I have had it checked and it has been confirmed as being in perfect working condition although it does have a few marks on the case. This will not matter to me as it is being fitted in a top unit on the camper units and the top of the case will not be seen.

A used SPLX 12 inch sub in its own sealed enclosure, whilst the enclosure is in good shape it needs a bit of tidying up and I have bought a grill for it to protect the woofer and will also add a bit of polyfill in the enclosure.and will also upgrade the wiring inside the enclosure to the woofer with some cable I have in my stash which although I am not certain what gauge it is looks quite a bit thicker than what is in it at present and it will do no harm to properly solder it in as at present the existing wire is only wrapped around the woofer terminals.

This is rated at 500 watts RMS and has a 50 oz magnet.

This is powered by a new EDGE DBX 2 channel amp bought when it was on offer as open box in bridged mode giving 700 RMS in mono

A bit different to the living zone this sub set up has a more powerful amp than the sub woofer but I will set the gain to compensate for this and will see how I get on with it but could always swap this out if I feel I need a bit more bass but happy to go with this for the present as would most likely suit my preferences better anyway.

All of the speakers for this zone will be facing out from the rear camper units and this zone should be very loud if required with according to google a SPL well in excess of 120db when at full volume which is the equivalent to being in the front row of a rock concert although as it is in the open this will drop off as you move further away

Will be using a Chord Odyssey 4 speaker cable speaker cable from the crossovers to both the mid and tweeters on the Blackface as I have a short length of about 30 inches that is spare in my hi-fi stash that at one time I was using to connect to a Linn active centre speaker but have since upgraded and due to the shortness of the length am unlikely to use it elsewhere else so might as well get some use out of it and would be ideal for this.

This is 12 awg cable and will use 2 strands for each crossover making it 9awg

Same as the Chord Rumour this is silver plated cable and as the Shoc from the reviews I have read is quite a warm sounding amp similar to the Alpine with a lot of bass thump this cable should balance it out a bit.

Total cost of this zone not including the Chord Odyssey 4 speaker cable cable £290

I have bought 30.5 metres of Amazon14 awg OFC speaker cable which is far better than the CCA cable which is normal for this price point and will be using this for all the other speaker runs.

Cost of this cable was I thought a good buy at £20

Will be double running this 14awg cable for the subs and maybe for the Bassface BlackfaceSPL5C.1 to the crossovers and to the Boschman 6x9's as well if I have enough but will only run to Boschman as a single run as will be to thick to get in the doors as a double and not really needed as these speakers are not so powerful as the others so will st the gain down a bit on these.

This will effectively make the gauge11awg on these doubled up runs.

Also in the tailgate zone set into the rear camper units is a used JVC KW-V235 double din 6.2 inch screen with built in DAB + and C/DVD playback but more importantly for me has a USB connection which will allow me to play my collection of lossless FLAC files plus blue tooth for convenience which will be connected to the amps on both zones 1 and 2

This head unit has 4 volt output rather than the more normal 2 volt output found in cheaper head units.

The Cost of the JVC head unit was £50

From among my stash of hi-fi bits i have stripped back a 15 metre length of Canare made in Japan video cable that was originally made by Mark Grant that at one time I was using with a quite high end Mitsubishi HC5000 Projector which I bought used to watch the 2016 Euros which is long gone. This is very good quality studio grade cable but with the advent of HDMI is now obsolete but is perfect for sending signals.

This will be used to connect to a Getue PRV Audio DSP 2.8X Cross over and Equalizer 8 Channel Processor which I have still to buy which will be fitted in the centre consul between the front seats along with the sub controller for the 8 inch Vibe Slick so that I can control and turn on or off and change f required the settings on all 3 zones or the sub either from the driving or living zone.

The cost of the DPS s £80.

I will be using one of the rear camper cupboards as a mini hi-fi zone with a Dilvpeotry R50 valve headphone amp also from my stash which I originally bought for use with my laptop which has long since been upgraded.

Also in this cupboard will be the Infinity amp which I am intending to mount vertically as I think it is just to nice a looking amp to hide away and so will try to make feature of it by offsetting it off the cupboard panel slightly with a neon rope around it.

Have bought a pair of new old stock Syvania 6AU6A/EF94 valves for this which should be a decent upgrade on the Chinese valves it came with.

Cost of valves £17

Will also be using and keeping in this cupboard with a upright headphone holder that I intend to modify so that I can fit it so that it is horizonal and will hold 2 pairs of headphones which will be a pair of slightly modded Grado SR80's and a pair of Silga headphones also from my stash which again have been long upgraded.

Will use this to run from the speaker outs to dedicated headphone sockets set in the camper units rather than the inbuilt headphone socket as this way it will be neater and I will be able to use both headphones at once without needing the cupboard door open.

Also still to get is approx 6 metres of 50mm welding cable to run from batteries to amps

Cost of 50mm cable £50

I do have a number of decent quality RCA cables in my stash which I could use but they are mainly in shorter 1 and 2 metre lengths so may buy some more cable to make custom lengths as required.

The Alpine amp in the driving zone will be running off my Yuasa YBX5334 starter battery with all the other amps running from my Yuasa l31-EFB leisure battery

I have recently upgraded the camper electrics with a Renology DC to DC charger and a MPPT solar controller for the 200 watt solar panel that I have fitted on the roof. I have not included the cost of this in the sound system build as I intended to do this anyway as part of upgrading the overall efficiency of the vans camper electrics

I have some18mm ply left from the camper build and will be making custom sealed enclosures for all 6 of the speakers and the Vibe Slick sub in the camper units filled with polyfill and also adding a few more brackets to the camper units to make them more rigid.

Will also be adding some polyfill in the SPLX sub enclosure.

I have also bought quite a number of bits from Aliexpress including things such as 3,1 adhesive heat shrink, different sized braided cable, butyl sound deadening mats for the doors, speaker adapters for the doors, SC terminals, 120mm fans and covers dc to dc converter, metal gold plated RCA plugs, USB extension. headphone sockets, cloth tape, cable clips, black carbon steel bolts to hold the amps down and various neon rope lights for a bit of a party effect and to showcase the amps

Total of the Aliexpess bits is approx £160

This is the first time I have ever built a car sound system this complex with up to now my limit being just adding in upgraded door speakers and power amps and a sub but I have built several quite hi end home systems and have tried to follow the same sort of principle as how I built my home systems of buying a mixture of older used decent quality gear as well as a bit of open box, discontinued or budget gear with good specs and using decent speaker cable, connections and leads and spending a bit of time to to match it all together

Total cost including the bits still to be purchased but not including bits from my stash is approx £1007 although would expect the total to be closer to £1500 if I was buying them but as I already have them and they are not being used I am not counting them in the cost as they are effectively coming for free.

I still have quite a bit in my stash that I have decided not to use as I consider it too good to be used in the van and may think of selling it to offset the cost but will hang on for now just in case I end up needing it.

I still have a few bits I am likely to need but none of these should be major money so am just about staying on my budget,

As all the amps are Class A/B and due to this run quite hot compared to Class D I will be putting a total of 10 120mm fans set into the camper units between the inner cupboards to keep the air moving and keep the amps cool,

Any advise would be much appreciated or if you can think of anything I have missed or that I could do better for not too much money.

I’m not into ICE myself @kfgas
so don’t understand a lot of the above but I do understand the amount of detail and work/thought etc going into this and as such hope it all works out as you want.
I love the fact that this is to be “yours” and not just loads of money thrown into off the shelf parts, also love the word “ budget “ ( I’m a Yorkshire man at heart) lol.

Also , congratulations on the longest post I’ve read on here for a long time, hope the pictures come soon 😍

Nice install - I said that as though I know, but I don’t….

I know nowt about ICE, but I would like to hear the sound from yours - for my ultimate experience I would select from my Spotify…

Club Tropicana - Wham, on loop.
