I keep a spreadsheet of all my domestic due dates (memberships, insurances, taxes, bills, etc.) but just noticed I hadn't updated my Elgrand insurance date. No problem as it should be a year on from the last one but... I can't find a renewal confirmation. I know I left Churchill last year as, presumably, their renewal premium was too high but I can't locate an e-mail or text confirming my transfer. Nor can I locate anything on my bank or credit card statements leading me to suspect I didn't actually renew. I know I was aware as I have emails from Confused.com but nothing I can find confirming renewal so did I?

What is against that, however, is that checking with mib.org.uk/checkyourvehicle states that it is currently insured (although not with who). Additionally, as I've driven many miles all around Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire this year, I'd have expected such an omissions to have been spotted by ANPR with a resultant nasty letter thudding onto the doormat.

So I'm all pretty puzzled by this.

Cheers,
John

Good question - according to this site you can pay MIB £4.50 for more info including who the insurer is

I have another problem - my Mitsubishi Delica D2 insurance is due soon but most insurers think it is a Mitsubishi Colt when I type the registration number in. The V5 has the correct details and I don't know how to correct the reg number datrabase insurers/comparison sites use.

If it was taxed then you get a notice off the DVLA stating you are driving an uninsured vehicle. This happened to me when I took a car off the road that still had tax on it but no insurance.

Thanks for the replies, folks - I've found an email from Aviva Zero so that's who I'm with.

My post about the Bulldog being greedy confirms why I left them and searched around - renewal was May 22nd.

I couldn't find a link to a £4.50 check but kept getting the two options I'd already seen:
  • Free to determine if insured or not (which is the one I'd used to say I was)
  • £10 but tailored to another vehicle claiming off the car being enquired about. I didn't fancy that as it would, most likely, flag my car as having been in an accident with disastrous consequences come next renewal.
All sorted now, though but it was a stressful day thinking I may have been driving an uninsured car since May!

Cheers,
John

Mid is notoriously poor at being right, I used to have a trade policy and half the time I put a car on it mid didn't show it.

I now carry all policy docs in each vehicle and scan them to the cloud as well. Many years back I was pulled for driving a car that wasn't on any database despite having all the docs at home. The Dibble left an officer with my car whilst another took me home to produce the paperwork.... nightmare

The Cloud’s a great idea, I’ll download your docs and change my reg plates😂

Years ago we had a Corsa for my son to learn to drive in, my son had a learner policy for the Corsa, I'd already had a trade policy for many years and the Corsa was a named vehicle on the trade policy, the trade policy specifically listed I was also insured for domestic and pleasure use. On this occassion my younger daughter was in the back of the car, my son front passenger and I was driving. Police pulled us over saying I wasn't insured, I expect they'll have initially noticed the older Corsa with a young lad sat in front which drew their attention, then pulled me when they supposed the older driver (me) wasn't insured. I produced my documents but police still reckoned I wasn't insured so I opted to go to court. Waiting for my case at court I thought the prosecutuon barister looked familiar but couldn't place him at first, then I realised he was a customer I'd converted a BMW740 to LPG for a year or so earlier and he'd allowed me to drive his car on my trade policy lol. Waiting for the my case to be heard I was getting increasingly fired up, knew I was in the right and even looking forward to the 'trial'. They kept me waiting most of the day, then just before my case was to be heard a policewoman (or court clerk / official, I forget which) came to sit by me and asked me about my case, I was more than happy to show her my policy that clearly stated I was insured in the Corsa, but then she went away for a few minutes, came back and told me my case had been dismissed. I was disappointed and annoyed, disappointed because at that point I was looking forward to proving I was insured and had done nothing wrong, I could imagine the look on the barister's face if he tried to 'do' me for no insurance if I asked him "Why did you let me drive your car then" lol, annoyed because I wondered if they had intentionally kept me there all day even though they knew they were going to dismiss the case for having the audacity to face them in court.

The court case was one of a few coincidences I had with the barister guy. I first met him in 2009 when he was launching a boat at Acaster slipway near York, at the time I only had a little inflatable and small outboard engine that used to be my dads. I now remember seeing him at the slipway clearly but we didn't really have much more contact than exchanging the usual pleasantries and I didn't tell him I did LPG conversions for a living. The next time I saw him was when he dropped his car off for LPG conversion but I don't think seeing him at the river came up in conversation, it might not even have occurred to me it was the same person at that point. A long time after the conversion I once called at his house near York to do an LPG service, I usually worked at base but he asked me about a service and I was already going to be passing his house so I suggested I could call and do it on my way to wherever I was going, which is when I noticed his boat and it reminded me where I'd seen him before, it all came together for sure at that point. The next time was at court.
