My E51 is in for its MOT and I’ve just been told it will need the driver’s side driveshaft replacing. I’ve tried JDM Car Parts but they don’t sell them. Does anyone know somewhere that does sell them? Any help is much appreciated

Do they mean the complete unit comprising shaft, 2 cv joints and 2 cv gators or just one/some of those components?

It’s the front one, and I think it’s the actual shaft itself - I’m waiting for the garage to get back to me with a clearer picture of what is needed.

Like my local garage, I guess yours likes to buy a complete shaft assembly because it is easier but I couldn't find one so bought both joints from JDM and garage will fit them to old shafts.

Recently on a Corsa I needed to change at least a CV gator perhaps also the CV joint (with the broken gator). I bought a complete new read made up driveshaft including both CV joints and gators because it was only £30 while just a CV joint and gator would have been close to the same amount... and obviously there's far less work to do if you're changing the complete unit rather than swapping CV joints on an old shaft.

But that was on a Corsa, not sure if the price difference would be anything like as close for an Elgrand but I suspect not. I recently changed just an inner CV joint gator on my black E51 and only bought the new gator, so did the usual and removed the complete shaft, end cap off the CV joint, clean old grease off, remove circlip, remove the CV from the shaft, put the new gator on, refit the CV, refit the rebuilt complete driveshaft on the car.

Thanks, you’ve been really helpful. I’ve spoken to my garage and they are going to do exactly the same for me. I’ve just ordered the parts from JDM.

But which part(s) of your driveshaft do the garage say are at fault?

I ordered and will replace both joints, I don't care about the cost of the parts I just want it fixed first time. May not be the same for this other gent.
