Fuel gauge recall

You need to definitively establish if the fuel recall has been done. To do this, you need to remove the cluster, don’t worry, it’s easy.
If it has been done, there will be a black box on the back of the cluster. You should be able to find photos online, or in the forums.
I had the recall done recently by Nissan, after I ran out of fuel with the gauge showing 1/3 full.

Here's a tip when you remove the cluster; take a photo of the Body Control Module, it's a silver box with a white sticker on it.
The number on the sticker is required if you ever need your keys coding.

Hi All,

I had a stressful breakdown, recovery & fault finding experience & the brilliant Sugoi Campers, Fareham, suggested checking out whether the fuel gauge was part of the Nissan product recall - which brought me here to find out how.

Thanks for all the info on this thread, it gave me the confidence to contact Nissan Japan direct & found out that the recall hadn’t been done. The email did say they don’t support exported vehicles, (same as a previous post in the thread somewhere). The previous google translate tip worked wonders on the documents too.

I decided to pursue the change anyway and after a couple of head banging conservations with Nissan UK and my local Nissan dealership, I got them to speak to each other (to get my import on their system so the garage could do the work) & the recall job was done FOR FREE! Thanks Nissan Portsmouth!

I’m not saying it was easy, but might be worth others giving the emails & phone calls a go to at least find out if they’ll be charged for the work, before going to the time & effort of finding workarounds.

Cheers,

Beccy
Hi Beccy,

Just started on this journey today. I got the same email from Nissan Japan advising me to contact Nissan UK and the local dealer.

Must say Nissan JP answered within 12 hours. I will keep my fingers crossed that Nissan UK is as efficient.

Ta!
Michael

Hi @rocket59 - that's very coincidental. After removing and looking at the cluster, I found mine hadn't been done. I'm sure I checked the VIN when I bought the car (10 years ago) and it didn't come up with any outstanding recalls. But definitely no external black module on my one, and no sticker on the door.

I emailed Nissan JP yesterday night, got a response back already first thing this morning. Politely saying that I needed to contact Nissan UK. I'm just about to email them - hope they are still doing these!

Hi gball,
Good luck. Nissan Japan also said that the van would not pass the Shaken (車検) MOT without the recall issue being addressed before export. Must be some dodgy paperwork floating around in Tokyo Bay.

Hi there, did you get a reply from Nissan uk yet.
I broke down with same issue today :( if possible could you let me know which uk email address you've tried please? Il start my recall journey aswell

No reply from Nissan UK yet - apart from the automatic one saying I'd get a response in two days! (That was on the 17th July)

I do have a tracking number - was going to give them 2 weeks and then send a chaser. I sent it to: gb@Nissan-services.eu (strange looking email but it worked)

Thanks. Actually coincidentally I did get a reply today saying "please speak to your local dealer" I spoke to the local dealer who was lovely, but couldn't find anything with my VIN - probably because it wasn't a UK vehicle. They suggested I call Nissan GB - who I then called. They haven't found anything either yet, but I did relay the message from Nissan JP about it needing to be sorted by the UK. (And the JP office also gave me the reference above) They said they would chat with the local dealer and try to figure something out!

Will update the thread when I hear back from them. Fingers crossed! Once I have an update, I will also post the reference number of the chat with Nissan GB so others who are starting this can hopefully skip a few steps.

The Nissan GB person also mentioned it was worth trying to find out if any other recalls were made for the car that might have been missed. I remember from ages and ages ago something about the cat converters, but I don't think that was an E51. I will have a look on this forum history to see if there was anything apart from R-717.

Hi I've been having the same problem now for a couple weeks and i was wondering if you got any joy out of Nissan

Hi guys,
After a few emails I've only had i response which was useless
See below:
Dear Peter,

I have reached out to the dealer, and they confirmed they are not equipt to complete this recall for the vehicle and would be unable to assist. They did say that other dealerships in your area may have the equipment to do this recall service buy they dont know who specifically.

Kind reagrds,

Ryan

What crap. Job can be done with a screwdriver. Four screws then plug and play. You might find a ready modded cluster from a breaker.

Been trying to see if you can just buy the part on line and il just fit it myself but so far no luck.

I haven't had success but they are waiting on the technician at Reading Nissan dealership to get back from holidays (which apparently is this week) I'll let you know what happens next.
I was a bit worried that the part is no longer available - but the central helpdesk were not able to advise, just that they were keeping on top of Reading's dealership to try to get to a positive conclusion. I will probably find out more next week!
I'd wondered if it was a sloppy soldering joint whether it's possible to repair it - but would rather not delve any deeper into the cluster if I can get it done officially.

Yep! Leave well alone. I have been appointed a case handler at Nissan UK. They have been invaluable, and my local Nissan dealer is speaking directly to them. I am assured that they will call me when the garage is satisfied with the information forwarded.

So over 3 months later with the case handler at Nissan UK, the conversation with the local (Reading) dealership has gone to nothing as they say they can't help as they aren't "import specialists". I've asked them to check with other dealers - thank you @Beccy99 for mentioning Portsmouth, if they can't suggest any close dealer, I will mention the Portsmouth branch.

A drive to Portsmouth isn't that bad if I can at least get it fixed (and it means I won't run the risk of running out of fuel on the way back)

I reckon the only reason they won't do it is because they won't get paid.

Interesting! I had assumed that local dealerships would get paid to do recalls - or in fact garages just get paid to be there. I wouldn't mind doing it myself if it was possible to get the part!
