Fog lamp location

I'm surprised the twin colour (white and red) LED mod hasn't been mentioned.

Not sure about the legalities of white lens with red bulb foglight for MOT though but if legal it's a simple mod that doesn't take any fitting of an extra light. I've seen dozens of Elgrands with the twin colour LED bulb mod.

I understand it's not cutting edge technology but I know some members have upgraded the originals with mixed outcomes.

I believe @LeStempy told me the operating voltage is 5v instead of the normal 12v.

There should be IR LED's in the wing mirrors to aid night vision for the cameras. You could try a rear facing IR array which might aid the reverse cam.

It has been mentioned but the Gentleman has opened 2 topics regarding the fog lamp. Some of the new cars comes with white rear fog lens but bulb will turn red

Some silly stats from the powers that be.

In the UK, a rear fog light must be fitted to the center or offside rear of a vehicle. It's a legal requirement to have at least one rear fog lamp.

Here are some other requirements for rear fog lights:

• They must be red in color
  
  
• • They must be fitted at or near the rear of the vehicle
    
  • They must be no less than 250 mm or more than 1,000 mm from the ground
    
  • They must be at least 100 mm from any stop lamp
    
  • They must have a circuit-closed tell-tale fitted
    

Rear fog lights are used to indicate a vehicle's position to other drivers behind it. They are high-intensity red lights that illuminate more brightly than standard tail lights

I took off the top section of tailgate trim the other week....above the curtains..and it exposed some cabling which I assume is for the rear view camera.

I might have a play around to see if I can upgrade the existing one as I have found a 5v one on Aliexpress. If successful I'll try the same with the front.

Ours went fir it's MOT t'other week and passed.

Must admit I was concerned they'd pull it, but more for the 4 reverse lights as I believe that's a no-no as well.

He must have been happy that day.

My current fogs utilise the lower reflectors in the clusters which makes them close to original brake light.
My mot inspector simply says they don’t interfere with the quality of the original brake lights and the fact that I have lots of other brake lights all present and working, he sees no reason to fail them .
This means I keep both reverse lights which have loads of leds in ( all rebuilt by @ChrisWills )
I also only have a single switch, it has warning light etc, but I can turn it on without any other lights on, some inspectors would fail this ( swings and roundabouts and different inspectors some with common sense)

Regards reversing lights, I keep mentioning left foot braking in automatics, in addition to what I've already said about it's advantages for driving it also helps to illuminate the rear (including for the rear camera) when reversing in the dark.

My RAV4 aliexpress rear fogs turned up today. Job for the weekend to try and get them installed (weather allowing).

I went for the smoked black ones so they should blend in well with the G30 paint when switched off, and mean I can reinstate the O/S reversing light that was deleted by the supplying dealer to put the fog light bulb in the original cluster. 2 questions though...

1) does anyone have a link to a thread (ideally with pics) detailing how to access the grommet in the boot floor so I can run the cable through from the existing location, to the back bumper? I haven't spotted any wiring running under the car so I think the current foglight wiring has been run internally from the dashboard switch to the rear cluster.

2) should I only be connecting the wiring to the driver's side of the new lamp units? The law states you must have at least one, I believe, but is there any risk of a jobsworth MOT tester failing it for having two connected lamps if I wire up both? It doesn't seem like a lot more work to connect the wiring for both units and if it's foggy enough to need to turn them on, I'd rather make the vehicle as visible as possible.

Can't help with where a grommet is to feed the wiring. But on my old e50 I did the same as you're doing, and wired both sides up as fog lights. No issues with mots over several years.

My S2 had a semi circle cut out of the LH side under the rubber seal, it's above the boot floor level around 100mm up the side (painted so must be factory) I then ran under the boot cover on the floor to the other side of the car for fog wiring (which had been shoddily put in the drivers rear cluster. Red line is Rh light to lh light, yellow is through into the boot via the cutout and green is under to the other side for fog connection, hope this makes sense. Car is still fully sealed but cable is under seal through a channel.

By far the hardest part was reconnecting the chopped original reversing bulb wire due to lack of space, shortness of cable, and sausage fingers...

Also rather confused as to why the dealer who fitted the original red bulb in the reverse lamp location appears to have used household 3 core electric flex to connect it to the switch in the front... Very weird!
