Are all E51’s this unreliable or is mine a lemon…

Yep, I’ve never had good experience buying used cars from dealers, especially big names like Evans Halshaw or A Clark. Always got shafted. At least with dodgy dealers you know you’re getting shafted 🤣

😂😂 got a good van as a base though to do properly myself i will have a go at most things so not too worried
 
Yeah, you should be alright, the issues are bot terrible, fixable for sure. Do check your power steering pump too, give a wee sniff and if you can smell a mackerel come back here, I’ll let you know what we’re cooking.

Who is the dealer?
Some poor sucker could be on their way to buy one from them, so a heads up does wonders.
 
I purchased mine for £8500 with about 25,000 miles on it. I have it serviced every year with an extra oil change at 6 monthly intervals. I use it pretty much everyday as my daily driver, short and long runs. she's been absolutely great so far. But with all second hand cars of a certain age, you can be as careful as possible but you can just get unlucky at times.
 
My 3.5 is now on 190k km plus, checked the oil before our trip to France and again this weekend after we got back, dipstick hasn't dropped more than 1mm - that's over 1500+ Miles fully loaded. I've had some teething issues (mainly due to not having ANY service history from the dealership) but nothing I wouldn't of expected to do outside of the crappy dealership issues I had for a 20 year old vehicle, I do think camper conversions are waaaaaay overpriced though. For reference I have a company supplied VW T5, after driving one of those for 3 years I can 100% say I'd never buy one with my own money.

Sounds like the 'dealer' I bought from.... Never again!
 
I get the impression that Tokyo campers haven't been in business very long? Might be worth getting an independent inspection and then a legal letter for recompense. Agree that a gearbox flush might help. Engine compression and emissions test? Any advisories on the MOT?

it had its first mot in the uk a few months before i bought it with no advisories, but just weeks after i bought it i found at least 5 faults which wouldn’t have passed an mot where i go including dangerously low brake pads I'm talking no material left.
 
I think you have been a bit unlucky OP - I ran two Elgrands for about 5 years in total and they were mechanically very sound, nothing needed doing. A few minor issues inherited (sunroofs, rear pop windows, fuel gauge etc but they are known issues). The gearbox and engine however were stars of the show, super smooth. Having paid 15k for it (I appreciate a lot of that cost is the conversion) you should definitely raise the issue quickly and expect it to be resolved.

My first one had fresh MOT when I bought it and when inspected underneath the CV boot was gone…
