Advice on awning bars

Good evening all.
So finally got the Elgrand sorted with the DVLA and we are now legal. I joined this group for the obvious experience and expertise that you guys have. I have searched the chats and whilst there is some info. Could you please direct me on how I can fit a awning bar. What is the best type. Do I fix directly to the roof or mount on roof bars with brackets? Your help and guidance would be well appreciated 👏
 
Welcome.
There's a number of posts in the camping section but you will need 10 posts to open the technical area which is where they are.
One of the advantages of being a premium member is that the technical area is open straight away, and you can post photos.

Why not look into magnetic strip awning bars, so no install required. Not used, but seemed like a solid idea to me.
 
I know nowt about awnings but the cleverest option I've seen is used by Dognero - using rubber suction handles similar to what glaziers use to carry glass.

Get to your 10 posts and you can see all options.
 
I will look at both of your suggestions. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will go to our local supplier and ask for their advise on the options you suggested. Thank you.
 
In terms of the 10 posts... I think it is only right that I go for the premium membership. It is a small cost for all the information available to a new novice like me. The main thing is the support for the forum. 👍

That makes a lot of sense. It is really slim so it fits in the small gap. Also it doesn't ruin the look of the vehicle. That was a worry for me and I guess it also keeps out the rain when the awningis attached. Did you fit it yourself with screws and sealant?

The magnetic strip is useless on its own as it slips off easily so its used a a draft excluder. (dose not take any weight)

Fits really well and having tried various other options I found this worked best for me.
I fitted it in a very short time. it came in two separate strips. I cut one down to size after measuring against the awning itself then positioned one uncut piece to the rear and butted the cut piece up to it. Used some mastic to hold in position then 2 very small self tapping screws to each piece after drilling small pilot holes into the roof.
Simple job once you get over the anxiety of drilling into the roof!

Thank you. Must admit I am nervous about drilling holes. Needs must. I will order the rails. Thanks again.

Don't know the actual size, sorry. They were the smallest ones I could find in my drawer of useful bits and bobs. If they fit through the hole in the rail and are long enough to take hold on the roof you can't really go wrong 😉
 
Can I suggest the self tapping screws that are used to hold the front undertray to the bumper.They're relatively short, fat and grippy.

Worth a try but I think they'll be too fat for the hole in the rail. The hole is quite small iirc.
