What have you done to your Elgrand today?

Today my radiator burst - just like that, no apparent reason, other than to pi55 me off.

View attachment 118899
A crack right along the top black plastic bit, lots of steam but lucky I was stationary on my drive when it popped.
I got impatient- my new radiator is not here until Wednesday/Thursday so I fixed the crack - how hard can it be.

I used a piece of overflow pipe and took a 30mm strip down its length.

I then roughed up the top of the rad and the inside of the pipe with 40 grit glass paper.

Then I covered the inside of the pipe and the rad top with Tiger Bond.

Left it over night with a brick sat on it and this morning I’ve done 85km with no leak.

How long until it blows? Answers on a postcard…..

Post moved to correct thread.

So, following the breeze on Thursday night we've had no power so have been living in the motorhome on the drive but, today, power has been restored and went out to fill up the Elgrand with the 7th tank of E85 bioethanol, this one being 72% ethanol according to the sensor. So that's three months since fitting the conversion kit and still running fine, and no differently than on petrol following a bit of tweaking for the winter cold start. Currently averaging around 6km/l as opposed to 7.1km/l on 98 RON which is 1€ per litre more expensive at the pumps.

Back at home I gave her the first wash of the year, which is shameful considering the amount of winter crud build up. It was only a quick once over as it's piggin' cold outside but at least it has restored the full power of whiteness.

Sorry for delay in replying.

Yes, the horn is fine with the wheel in all positions
Any answers oh wise ones.

The fault I seem to have is above but just to refresh, the steering wheel controls only work when the wheel is rotated away from its natural position.

Nice exhaust tips!
Common problem with Elgrands rear calipers seizing Im afraid!
Thankyou, very happy with them. New centre box next.

Is it? Well hopefully won't happen again for a while now once this one is replaced

Sounds like a clock spring issue, they can cause very strange and sometimes intermittent problems, not 100% though, @LeStempy may have more to add

I bought and tested the ability to charge my kids iPads in the back using the Japanese 100v AC socket. I will live inside the cupholders until they need it. £21 from eBay or £35 on Amazon.

If i use the uk plug sockets I will only using a laptop charger etc

I would whip off the airbag and check the earth wire is secure on the spade terminal as a first step.

Whats the fuel consumption like when running on LPG?
It varies quite a bit, depending on the roads and driving style. Long run on motorways at 70mph gets 24/25mpg but if I nurse it along at 55mph it gets 27/28mpg
But short 5 mile trips round town with probably 25% of the journey on start up petrol it only gets 14mpg.
I have not accurately measured the difference between LPG and petrol but @Lpgc will probably have some info

Whats the fuel consumption like when running on LPG?
Tend to get 10% less mpg on LPG than on petrol, the cost savings come because LPG is cheaper to buy than petrol. It's not as good as it has been because most forecourts that still sell LPG charge more for it now than they have at times in the past, e.g. Morrisons sell it for 99.9p now. LPG is propane, same stuff as in red bottles, I have the same type of red bottle commonly used for static caravans and by caterers etc delivered to home from a local supplier, there's 92.1litres in one of these 47kg bottles, I pump it from the bottle into my car, it costs around 85p per litre. If I use 10% more LPG than I would petrol that's like paying 93.5p per litre for petrol instead of paying £1.46 for super unleaded and LPG is higher octane than super unleaded. Still saving over a third what I'd spend on petrol by running on LPG even now. There have been other times in the past when the savings went down to only around a third like they are for me now, like for a period during the mid 2000's, but then after the mid 2000's the savings bounced back up to the longer term average of around 40% again. There have been plenty high spots for savings too, like when petrol went up to nearly £2 per litre we were still paying 60odd pence for LPG.

My Elgrand tank (underslung where the spare wheel usually fits) holds 93litres, I fitted the ability to quickly fit/remove a second tank that when fitted fits behind the rear row seats, so I can have 170 litres of LPG on board with the 2nd tank fitted, that's about 37gallons, so can have range of over 700 miles on LPG alone. The petrol tank and petrol fuel system are not affected, so even when all the LPG has run out can fall back to a full tank of petrol, so can have over 1000 miles range without needing to refuel (if I didn't mind paying for more expensive petrol lol). In practice I never use petrol, the idea is to run on LPG instead of petrol to get the savings.

Mine is an E51, obviously an E52 is a different design. On an E52 the LPG tank fits in the underfloor level 'bathtub' luggage area at the rear and the tank is a cylinder shape instead of the spare wheel shape that fits an E51. The biggest capacity cylinder that will fit in a standard E52 is 75 litres, other installers used to fit a much smaller tank before copying my idea to fit a bigger cylinder that uses a 90degree mounted valve. But an E52 is a bit more economical than an E51 anyway, so an E52 will get more range per litre. I've converted well over 800 E51's to LPG and many dozens of E52's.

My car is going into a local garage tomorrow (not the one who made a dog's dinner of various jobs on it last year) for a full service including Denso plugs, PCV valve (might as well whilst doing the plugs), aux belts and pulleys. Hoping that all of the above might help with my terrible (even by Elgrand standards) fuel economy. If the alternator or water pump were dragging, could that significantly affect fuel economy? My car resolutely refuses to average over 5km/L though this is primarily town driving.
