E51 The E51 Catalytic Converter Problem

I had my front cats removed at a cost of $330. Service manager asked me why I wanted them removed, so I guess it's not a common thing in Australia. I felt for such a piddling amount of money it was insurance against having to potentially replace the engine.

G-train. did you mean you removed the rear cats, not front ones, unless you are having LPG fitted.

They removed the fronts. The back cats were replaced as part of the compliance process when the van was first brought to Australia, so I couldn't see the point in removing the back ones. The front cats were replaced with straight through pipes. It couldn't have been that difficult a process due to the price I was charged, maybe 2 hours work ??

After front CAT removal, Did you have any fault dash lights come on as purported by some quarters here. If not, did the garage do anything special so not to trigger the engine management light.

I didn't have any dash light issues, these people are JDM specialists, have no idea what they did, they always do a brilliant job.

Hello mate. If at all possible you could find out what they did it would be really beneficial to the club. Nobody thus far has managed a way to remove those fronts easily without dropping the engine. Certainly not a couple hours work.

I had a complete stainless still system fitted including 200 front cats they did not drop the engine it can be done in place it was done by Powerflow Southampton.

Yours didn't sound like a 2 hours job from memory Andy. And Steve Tojo hasn't found an easy way yet.

Thankfully I stumbled across this issue and I have my car off the road currently until my replacement pipes arrive. In the mean time the missus is driving her Mazda and i'm on the motorcycle so a week to wait is nothing.

Thanks for all the info guys

I got mine done at the same place as @Andyzz. No dropping engine (but took them about 2hrs to remove the fronts)

I believe a few years ago there was a link where you could run your VIN to see what warranty work or some kind of work was done? Anyone have this still?

I got told about a place just outside Bristol called Infinity Exhausts, they did the front cats for a guy called David Kennedy on one of the facebook groups.
He says they didn't take long to do them.
Maybe worth giving them a shout?

Yeah they did mine already.

I have just bough a 2003 e51 that is converted to LPG. My mechanical knowledge is not great so forgive a possible stupid question. Does boring LPG potentially block rear CAT?

Thanks,
Matt

If you have LPG then you can remove ALL the cats i think.

@Lpgc can give you a much more concise answer :)

Lpg or no lpg there is still the potential for the front cats to break down and block the rear cats. As has been said many times if you run lpg the you could remove the front cats and leave the rear cats in place and still pass the uk emissions test. I think you would be ok as far as emissions go with zero cats if running on lpg.
