E51 The E51 Catalytic Converter Problem

cheers mate just realised

I can also do decat at the same time as LPG conversion for £100. I can't promise to do this for everyone who wants it at the same time as LPG conversion... much depends on what other LPG work I have on in the same week and also depends on how busy my mate's exhaust place is at the time. I take the vehicle to them, they take exhausts off and put them back on, I do the decat while the exhaust is off. But usually if someone wants me to do the decat at the same time as LPG conversion I am able to get it done.

The front cats will do most of the clean-up work... If running on petrol I'd expect more chance of passing an emissions test with the rear cats removed than with front cats removed, if running on LPG it should pass an emissions test without any cats. When I've put my new engine in my Elgrand won't have any cats ;-)

No front cats may well cause OBD codes, after all just about the entire purpose of post cat probes is to make sure cats are working and they're obviously not working if decatted... Post cat probes cannot check rear cats because they are fitted between front and rear cats so removing rear cats won't cause any OBD codes but removing front cats probably will. There are ways to prevent removal of front cats causing OBD codes (probe spacers / electronic emulation fixes).

1. Emissions is one aspect concerned in the MOT, 2. Another aspect is modification of a vehicle's emissions control equipment.
At least until recently a vehicle presented for MOT running on LPG side-steps both aspects because a vehicle presented for MOT running on LPG should have a 'no cat emissions test' which is similar to a carb emissions /emissions equipment test and carb vehicles don't have cats.
But removing all cats entirely is getting into a grey area especially in the light of recent changes to the MOT... So best advice is probably if you intend on decatting all cats at least make it look as though there is a cat (on each side) in place. I can't see anyone having a problem putting straight through pipes on in place of rear cats because then there will still be front cats in place and an MOT tester will probably only expect one cat each side of the engine anyway. But there might be a problem or future problem if straight through pipes are fitted in place of all cats. I'll just be decoring all my cats but leaving the cat bodies in place. I suppose if I wanted to be really fancy I could weld a straight through pipe inside the cat bodies...

Hi All

New to the forum as need some advice really. Have had E51 since last June but been off the road since December as it began spluttering and then just died. Couldnt get it started again and had it towed away. The garage has spent last 6 months looking at it periodically and dont know what is wrong with it. They have got it going again, drive it, gets seriously hot, load of smoke out of the exhaust and thats that. Then i see the past above and i wonder if that could be it. Before the cats get blocked, would there be shuddering and lack of response? I think I will point the above post out to them.

The mechanics said that there is excessive fuel getting into the system but they dont know where it is coming from. I know i havent given too much info here, but any advice would be greatly welcomed as only drove it for 5 months and now been off road for 6!
Watching this post, a bit concerning to read, having just bought an E51

Mine have been removed, but white smoke on startup

Yes, not actually smoke but condensation, it's a big old exhaust system that holds a lot of moisture.

Mine is the same. Soon clears.

But should it smell acrid ?

Mine smells when cold but then so does my Volvo, it's the rich mixture for cold running.

I know that smell, my Frontera did it, this is more like an acrid burnt smell :scream:

Is it using oil, as in do you need to top it up regularly?

To soon to say only driven it 3 times so far, will be doing oil change tomorrow so will be monitoring closely

I only made it to page 9 of 20, but a massive thanks for all the invaluable info in this thread. My local garage is getting the Elgrand up on the ramps tomorrow to see what’s what with the cats. I’m now fully loaded with info and will know what I’m talking about... I think!

Just about to do a deal on a 3.5 rider autech on eBay but the seller refuses to decore rear cats due to "legal" reasons...fair enough i guess. As mentioned in my intro post I'm based in Oxford could anyone recommend someone who could do the work if i do go ahead with the purchase ?

There will be plenty of garages in your area that will do it for you. I can't recommend any in your area but a quick phone around will find you 1 in a jiffy. I hate traders that refuse to de cat. It would make me take my business else where.

Yeah, any Elgrand dealer specialist won't have a problem sorting the rear cats, I'd be hesitant buying from a garage that wouldn't be willing to do that work.

Any decent exhaust fabricator will be able to sort them for you or go for an exchange set from @Winchester
