As others have advised best go with importers on here

Forget reviews, generally bullshit!
Make you own mind up and decisions. Car Warehouse have been going over 30 years, if they were that bad would not have lasted, surely?
I found Keith knowledgeable and helpful, absolutely no pressure on sale and loads to choose from.
On the cat front, they don't de-cat, but at the same time those that do only ever offer rear cats (surely just a half way measure?)
I found my Elgrand there, just the spec I wanted and slightly cheaper than others so simply costed into the project to get front cats (the proper job) done elsewhere.

I had also looked at Car Warehouse Middlesborough, they have a very interesting list of vehicles, and current count of over 50 Elgrands! Probably the most in the UK from one seller? I was put off also by the mixed reviews, but also - there is no mention of decoring the cats on their sale prep list. I spoke with them about this and they said that decoring the cats is not needed now on Elgrands, as the problem only affected Series 1 E51 Elgrands as it was a fuel issue, therefore they do not decore. From research (on this forum) I believe this to be incorrect, and therefore I took this as a bad sign. Be interested to hear others thoughts on this. Should all sellers be decoring the cats?

Other good sellers I think (from reading reviews etc) are Worcester Road Motors, Justjapanese, and New Acre (though they tend to be mainly Alphard specialists)
I looked at Care Warehouse recently when in urgent need of a new E51 to replace mine. All of the ones advertised were either sold, reserved or still on the way from Japan. The one I was interested in was not due in till March and they suggested that I reserve it with a hefty deposit - no thanks. not till I have seen it in the flesh - that's not the way I like to doi business.

Good luck with your search - you could always buy my accident damaged one and put it back on the road !!:D

I have a 2006 series 2 E51. The previous owner, @dognero, had to replace the engine because of front cat failure

Thanks for the replies everyone that is really helpful. I am still on the lookout on the 'recommended' seller sites, just waiting for the right one to come along (I am quite picky!)

One other general question I am curious about - I have noticed that none of the dealer sites seem to suggest anything like 'O.N.O' or 'Best Offer' - like you might get in a private autotrader ad, for example.

I wondered what general experiences anyone has of haggling with dealers - do they all tend to be strictly 'this is the price' and that's it, or is there any flexibility in the price ? Thanks for any advice.

Surely it is down to your negotiation skills?
If you meekly say “ooh, I don’t suppose there is any chance of a bit of a reduction is there?” The answer is probably “no”
You need to thoroughly check the car over, discuss all aspects of it, drive it and spend the time so that the dealer has put effort into you. Only when everything else has been discussed you can say something like “ ok, I’d like it so if you will take £***** I’ll buy it” or you could try “ ok, I’d like it but my max is £ so if you will take that we have a deal”
All dealers will be very happy to sell at the ticket price but will have a little bit in there to give away a token to sweeten you and still be happy. You may be assertive enough so persuade them to sell at an unhappy price but I don’t think that helps anyone.
I think you should leave the seller in a happy state. That way if you have any issues he will be willing to help you out.
Sometimes it may be better to negotiate that the dealer does something, something that might cost you £ but will cost him less.

When i bought mine from VinePlace there was no negotiation - when the guy delivered it my plan was to find a couple of faults then try to knock some money off.

But i couldn't find any faults....none.

Thanks, some good advice 👍
