hi everyone this is general question so I apologise first. so we have a 1972 vw camper van which we can't maintain and want a van we travel in. I have been looking at the elgrands and I think they are amazing. so does anyone have any importers they recommend and also 2 or 4wd drive and 2.5 or 3 litre..this is important for us as it's our lifestyle change or does anyone know of genuine people selling well looked after van. our budget is around 23k

thank you for any comments but

Welcome along. First read this.

Hi Andy, it’s difficult to recommend anyone as that accepts some responsibility. I’m sure a dealer on this OC will connect but also stick around and a nice one may come up for sale on here. Also someone in your area will connect and give you a steer. Moving to the Darkside will be a good upgrade from the Dub, they were never the vans you were looking for!

I went for 4wd drive and the 3.5. reason being mine is a camper and I will be taking her off the beaten track and up mountains etc. I'm already glad I did because I took her up a steep hill this week and the rears were spinning so I knocked her into auto and away she went! Of course all depends on your situation and how you plan to use the van?

Plus I went for the 3.5 for the extra grunt and the fuel consumption compared to the 2.5 is minimal but the power increase is substantial. Plus they sound mega! These are big heavy buses so these options are importing my eyes. Others will have more to say and offer advice, this forum is the bees knees.

I got my van from Worcester Road motors, but there is also Stuart Spencer both dealers in and around Birmingham seeing that you have got 23k to spend then is it a camper you are after ,I know there is a company in the Birmingham area but can't remember their name at the moment but believe other members will let you know where they got theirs from good look with the hunt

Hello and welcome.
As @Griffy said 4WD 3.5 for me please.
23 k is a very healthy budget, keep checking our for sale section

Having been there (but I ended up going to North Wales for mine) I don't think you can go far wrong with Worcester Road - not the cheapest but they appear to have a good workshop so likely to have good prep/repairs/servicing. Just be warned they also sell Toyotas....

oh no more choices lol... I saw one on Ebay ..3.5 28k up in Leeds looks mint

Adding some balance to this:
1) Be sure you're clued up on the imported car world, meaning
a) Ensure you have a mechanic (and maybe a back up) who will/and is skilled/experienced in working on Elgrands. This might not always be the case. Parts of course aren't as easy to come by compared to 'normal' cars. Granted they can often be sourced, but maybe the mechanic you use might think it's a bit hard work and not be bothered. Maybe you're skilled yourself and can do basic work etc etc
b) Run some numbers with insurance companies (comparsion websites?) to get a gist of how much it'll cost. Insurance for imports can be VERY high, personal circumstances differ from user to user of course. Note also if the worst happens, due to the difficulty in sourcing OEM parts, insurance companies might write it off at a bar far lower than they would with a 'normal' car.
c) A big one, certainly one I wished I knew before I jumped in, is be aware that with imports there is a much more restricted path if you wish to re-sell. A lot depends on how long you intend to have the van, and how you usually sell cars. If you pass them on conventionally (dealerships/webuy outlets etc), pretty much no dice. If you often sell privately, fine, as this may well be your only re-sale avenue.

If you were aware of that lot^ and/or it don't bother you, good luck with your search. Personally I'd go 3.5L. There are lots of threads on 2.5 v 3.5.
2wd v 4wd depends on your intended use. You'll know that more than anyone and common sense/where you'll end up in it gives you the answer. Note if you didn’t really need 4wd, then it'll be another thing which could go wrong.

oh dear I have a headache..clearly I need help from you guys we learnt some hard lessons with our vw

It's certainly an enthusiasts car as you will gather from being on the forum. If you are the kind of driver who has no interest in a vehicle other than being a means to an end then an Elgrand is probably not the best choice. But if you enjoy being involved with your vehicles and don't mind putting some energy into its wellbeing then dive in.

ok...so what would you recommend...but to be honest we would get involved in it massively but a 1972 vw was one step too far..we really enjoyed the vw but maintaining a van of that age is a step to far..mechanical i can do basic stuff

Well there are a few shows on where the club will be in attendance so that might be a good place to start.
