Insuring your Elgrand

Hi All,

I have just purchased an Elgrand with side conversion. Admiral based on the number plate shows it as a motor caravan is this ok or do I need to tell them anything in details like its been converted etc? I'm already with them so adding the Elgrand via multi car policy.

As well as the Ellie you need to insure other things:-

Hilarious

£194 is cheap for ANY vehicle, let alone a Japanese import with a big 6 cylinder engine. Even a 1 litre Fiesta might be more than that?

Thanks for the information everyone. Starting the trawl through tomorrow

Am I right in thinking that when insurers ask about modifications I say none? Thanks

You say none of there are no modifications (edit: I missed out the no before! 🤣). You declare the modifications if there are any.

They don't usually affect the price of the insurance, but might mean you're not covered if you don't declare them.

Online forms usually have a list of common modifications. If you have to tick the 'other' box it'll probably tell you to call them. I'd then tick the 'none' box & get my quote, then call them so I know if they quote me higher.

Hope that helps, message back if it doesn't.

Another great post. Exactly what forums are about

Wow, Admiral must really like you, my renewal was over 500, and then they added another 200 when we got rear-ended a couple weeks ago, despite the other driver's insurance copping for it
As harsh and ridiculous as this seems, statistically the insurance companies now view you as unlucky. If you get hit by another car you're more likely to be be involved in another accident. This is why they ask accident regardless of fault. Sucks huh

Have been doing some cursory ringing around for a quote. Will be registered in the better halves name (26yrs old, 6y no claims, 6y driving), with myself as a named driver (26yrs old, 9y no claims and 9y driving). I own an imported legacy, with the better half as a named driver, and also have owned a fiesta ST/focus ST.

Either way, we are looking at a 2WD 3.5 Elgrand. Admiral came back with £1,100 and Greenlight refused to quote as my Mrs hasn't had experience driving a RWD car before... seems a bit loony that she could have driven an e46 318d for a year and get insurance on the Elgrand, when she has access to my 260bhp legacy and now can't.

Rang Adrian flux and they've offered in the ballpark of £650 which is better than refusing to quote I guess!

Insurance companies can be odd at times...

Try Performance Direct

Joe, have you tried a comparison site? Always my first port of call.
Comparethemarket etc

Insurance computer systems generally use Association of British Insurers (ABI) industry standard lists for many things: vehicles, occupation, accident types etc. Each specific model of car is on the list and assigned its own code and also an insurance group rating. Thatcham who do all sorts of things including ratings of immobiliser and tracking devices also maintain the ABI list of cars and update it on a monthly basis.

Cars appearing on the list are European models and type approved. Thatcham are also involved in type approval of vehicles including emissions testing for manufacturers. For example Vauxhall used to import the HSV GTS and Maloo while they were still made in Australia and sold them in the UK rebadged as Vauxhalls, they initially put one of each through type approval and although imported they become a UK type approved model and hence appear on the ABI code list.

You used to be able to do a public search of the list on the Thatcham website but I can't find that and I no longer have industry access. I believe there is an Elgrand listed (E51 3.5) but why its there I'm not sure. I've a 2002 3.5 and hence never have any bother with insurance as it gets rated by all the major insurers and appears readily on broker systems.

The brokers specialising in imports and unusual vehicles such as Greenlight will have a different computer system, often allowing free format descriptions of vehicles and they offer specialist insurance policies where rating is not based on the ABI code, only on all the other factors of the vehicle.

I'm sorry but I can't guide you with an answer to get a better range of quotes, I think you'll have to stick to specialist brokers similar to vehicles imported from the USA. Hopefully more people on the forum with experience of their insurance for models different to mine will be able to help you.
Just in case this hasn't come up since this original post, the ABI/Thatcham list now has five Elgrands listed:
(1997-2000 NISS 5E PA 3274) Elgrand
(1997-2002 NISS 5 DA 3153) Elgrand
(1999-2001 NISS 5E DA 2953) Elgrand
(2000-2010 NISS 5E PA 3498) Elgrand
(2002-2010 NISS 5E PA 2494) Elgrand

A bit odd, as the 'D' in there indicates a diesel vehicle.

The 5 is no of doors, E is estate body style, A for automatic and the numbers are the engine size.

The D vehicles will be the E50's with the QD32ETi and ZD30DDTi diesel engines 👍
