Not sure if I have missed it and I'm sorry if I have but we are buying our Elgrand to then convert to a camper, once its converted I take it we just ring the insurance company again and explain? Is it likely the price will rocket? Some people have said you could keep it insured as a van and then have a sort of contents insurance, anyone else heard or done this? Thanks

Am insured with brentachre told them I would be slowly turning it into a camper and it didn't put price up at all
They just said email us and let us know when you have done stuff so your covered
As all none performance mods are covered free of charge

I'm with Direct line. They said once mine gets converted I will have to pay an extra 25 per year plus an increase of 300 in compulsory excess. Also they said it would have to be converted professionally and not a self build (which it will be done by a conversion company luckily)

Thanks for the info we want to do it ourselves as we do not want a full shiny set up just basic cooking area and pull out bench seat. Not sure how this will affect things. Anyone else got any suggestions or had any other previous experience of self builds.

Never even heard of that company, where did you find them? That's good to know. What have you done to your van? What are your plans?

Thanks, just requested a quote from Greenlight, also been in touch with Adrian Flux, and Wheelbase who sold us the bus have mentioned another import specialist, so that's looking like the way to go
I'd stay away from Adrian flux mate heard alot of bad stories 👍

I've used them for 7 years now with about 15 differnt imported cars and some UK market cars all modified
A friend put me on to them
And haven't done much yet as only had it a few days
But plan on doing a rear kitchenet and
Pop top

Brentacre. I had them when I was running a ridiculous modded VW Passat TDi. They never increased the premiums with the engine mods, the brake mods, wheels etc for five years on the trot. Great outfit.

I just ran a quote through Confused to get an idea of the market and what I'll be paying if I jump into Elgrand ownership. I got a best quote back from Admiral of £283 for 10000 miles per annum, with breakdown and windscreen cover on a 3.5 E51. I'm shocked to say the least. My Delica was somewhat more and it was old and knackered. My Saab is also old and even more knackered and costs nearly twice as much to insure each year. This Elgrand ownership malarkey is looking tasty 🤓

I have tried many companies. Direct Line cheapest by far but found going direct to green flag was cheaper than with DirectLine

I just got a quote from the meerkat. I have business use on there and price was similar to Honda CRV insurance at £330 fully comp, I’m happy with that (E51 3.5)

Again full credit to the previous posters and highlights the value of this EOC forum/ Community. I would never have considered LV as an Insurance option. I have an E51 camper conversion and have been with Direct Line since I got the van.

LV have just shaved £120 off of Direct Lines "best price" and I have better cover and the following extras all within the same premium:
* Uninsured driver damage
* Replacement locks and keys
* Wrong fuel cover
* 24/ 7 Helpline
* 180 days European cover
* £300 personal belongings cover.

Had the choice for several additional extras but I am already covered else where. Plus the exercise was totally painless. All completed on line as they even have an option for campervan conversion which is a real plus as I usually have to have a 20 minute call with a broker each time telling them about the scope of conversion..
Thanks guys, appreciated..
George that sounds, Well pretty good then, ( to quote a line from a film). Did you say what you paid?I ve been on the phone and hour or more trying to get EU cover for my likely Elgrand. I m looking for 90 days + so 180 sounds good . Saga will give me365 days - for £550.00 cos l’m an old git who has only been driving for 49 years and I had a crash taking my son to football when he was 12, he’s 36 now by the way ( and given up football). I don’t even know if I can visit France for more than 90 days? I ve applied but told them I live in an air bb room for 5 years or somewhere near a lake ( see above) .
I need to lie down now in a dimly lit Elgrand with curtains!!! 🚐

Just paid a deposit on a 2005 VG, used the usual comparison websites and got some OK prices in fairness. Then tried Adrian Flux and realised I won't be using them as they were nearly 25% more expensive.

Insurance is a hot topic in any car forum, but with Japanese Imports it's even more prominent.

No you should not be charged the earth for owning and insuring an Elgrand. Yes, parts are more expensive in the event of crash damage, so the only thing you'll really have to face is that you may find it's written off in a fender bender, where other cars might not be. This will depend on the insurer though, and the value of the car/type of damage etc.

ElgrandOC has an insurance partner with Greenlight Insurance. These have given a lot of our members some exceptionally low quotes over the last year and you get 15% off with them just for being a member of EOC. Try them first, see what they say!

Failing that, you can play the ringing game all you like. I've seen some people get stupid quotes from one main insurer, but then someone else got a ridiculously low quote from the same insurer.

It really is hit and miss, and all based on your Post Code / driving history etc.

If you want a laugh, try a comparison site... I've had some silly four figure quotes for mine on comparison sites, but once you rule them out and head towards the Japanese Import specialist insurers, you start to see more sensible numbers.

Direct Line, LV, Aviva have all given members great or terrible quotes, so try them and see. Same goes for any of the other big name insurers.

Jap Import specialist insurers include Adrium Flux, Sky Insurance, Greenlight.

Also, on the topic of insurance... if you are going down the "import yourself route". You will need to insure your vehicle on the VIN number when it arrives in the country. This means that in the event of anything happening before it is registered, you are covered. It also means you are covered to drive the car to/from an MOT station to get the first test done.
I went with Adrian Flux as they insure my self-build motorhome, still wasn't cheap though. I would be interested to know what people pay P.A. on average

Just south of £800 with Adrian Flux with 1 year NCB inherited from my self-build Motorhome, 10,000 miles P.A. I'll take a look at Greenlight this time next year..

Absolutely agree, it’s hit and miss. There seems to be no pattern to it! Do you think it may be about quotas? They sell a 1000 at one price then change it who knows? If you do the maths it a huge industry!
60 million people , maybe 30 million drivers, 20 million paying £20 - £50 pcm , it breaks your calculator!
Not sure why Greenlight did not pop up in my early comments on the site re: Insurance. I got a deal from LVE.
Thanks for the heads up for next time! Dave
