Insuring your Elgrand

WOW I am already insured with Adrian flux on our other car.
They just quoted me £978 WTF..I told them the average quote is around £4-600 and I am in a good postcode for my other car with them.
He explained that as it is an import and an unfamiliar car to us the cost is higher! I pointed out that the other newbys with an import Elgrand that's unfamiliar to them are the same situation as us. told to ring round and they will match a genuine lower quote...DONT think so ;-)
Then I rang greenlight on the number customer services gave me for a chassis number quote only to be told we don't do it. IS IT MEEEE???
No. I just called Greenlight and they were very unhelpful and unfriendly.

I have used Adrian Flux no Problem sorting out

Hi, Insured as a car not as a camper as we are using as everyday transport with odd night away

Phone calls this week...posted elsewhere but sensible to repeat here

Adrian Flux came out best though they are my current insurer
Greenlight said they couldn’t get anywhere near AF and don’t bother with Direct Line!
Honest and open I suppose...
AF quote is 440 but I’m city centre, camper, with no allocated parking, so I leave the Dangler all over the place.

Went for LV trhough TopCashBack. £365 for wife, me and two sons-in-law. Also European breakdown cover for just over £100. Worth taking the hit of £50 admin fee to cancel existing policy. :):):):):) All the way to the bank!

I just called Greenlight to be told they won't offer a quote until its less than 21 days before I need the cover, strange number when everyone else is 30 days, oh well. Directline was £536 and LV were hopeless, I didn't even get a price from them, 35 minutes on the phone and they kept arguing with me that my job/industry was not on their system, computer says no, FFS LV, sort it out, lol

Try using the internet for LV and particular do it through TopCashBack (must admit that the system crashed when I tried to pay, and had to pay by phone in the end). Wife and I are retired, but I did have a bit of a problem getting exact match for sons-in-law's occupations, but near enough. I know we have to be truthful or it can have nasty repercussions, but let's face it if you have a claim, is the insurance company really going to delve into the exact nature of your occupation? There must be something in their list of possible occupations that is not too far off what you do. I don't know how much mileage you intend to do, but don't overestimate it or it will cost you and you may be paying for something you are not going to use. 😊

Thanks for the advice. It was quite funny but just stupidly time-consuming and getting nowhere fast. I said I was a web designer and she said what industry, and I said web design/IT'ish, I build websites and she said, 'oh, I'll just put you in as a self-employed builder in the construction industry then...' and it continued like that for ages. I've got nothing against builders but know they sometimes have a higher premium because they carry tools in their cars/vans, so it was important to get it right, but she insisted I was a builder, lol. I'll give them a call another day, as I'm sure they were just having a meltdown day. I normally do about 3-4000 a year, so nothing huge

By coincidence, one of my son-in-laws is a web designer. I am sure there was something on LV's drop down list that was close to that. IT consultant maybe?

I did intimate to her web design/IT'ish so thought that IT consultant or something similar would come up but she was having none of it, lol. she might have just been having a bad day :)

Insurance is a hot topic in any car forum, but with Japanese Imports it's even more prominent.

No you should not be charged the earth for owning and insuring an Elgrand. Yes, parts are more expensive in the event of crash damage, so the only thing you'll really have to face is that you may find it's written off in a fender bender, where other cars might not be. This will depend on the insurer though, and the value of the car/type of damage etc.

ElgrandOC has an insurance partner with Greenlight Insurance. These have given a lot of our members some exceptionally low quotes over the last year and you get 15% off with them just for being a member of EOC. Try them first, see what they say!

Failing that, you can play the ringing game all you like. I've seen some people get stupid quotes from one main insurer, but then someone else got a ridiculously low quote from the same insurer.

It really is hit and miss, and all based on your Post Code / driving history etc.

If you want a laugh, try a comparison site... I've had some silly four figure quotes for mine on comparison sites, but once you rule them out and head towards the Japanese Import specialist insurers, you start to see more sensible numbers.

Direct Line, LV, Aviva have all given members great or terrible quotes, so try them and see. Same goes for any of the other big name insurers.

Jap Import specialist insurers include Adrium Flux, Sky Insurance, Greenlight.

Also, on the topic of insurance... if you are going down the "import yourself route". You will need to insure your vehicle on the VIN number when it arrives in the country. This means that in the event of anything happening before it is registered, you are covered. It also means you are covered to drive the car to/from an MOT station to get the first test done.
Great information to know here! Thanks for some good advice! All makes looking to buy one a little less stressful when looking at everything else involved :)

I just called Greenlight and they wouldn't offer insurance as we don't have any modifications.....

Barry Grainger (BG insurance) was best price for me (LPG and camper conversion)

I Must admit that I called Green Light (GL) today and got a great offer with LV around £350.00. Cheaper than even calling LV directly 🤔

Adrian Flux was good too but GL price was almost £80 cheaper.

I'm yet to try more, that's tomorrow's job. I'll let you all know.

Give "Quote me Happy" a try, I'm with them, they are part of Aviva. Cheapest quote I had and £80 cheaper than Mark Richards renewal quote.
