Insurance is always a hot topic of conversation, especially when it comes to Japanese Imports.

As a general rule of thumb, there should be no real "premiums" for insuring the Elgrand over any other vehicle in it's class. The problem you may find is that insurance databases are not always as up to date as they should be when it comes to imports.

Typically, you want to be going for a Japanese Import Specialist insurer. These are usually the best in terms of keeping up to date with import vehicles on their database. They will also, USUALLY, be the most competitive.

Do NOT bother wasting time with comparison sites for your Elgrand... they will throw up ridiculous quotes and just be a waste of your time. Go to insurance companies directly.

My general advice to anyone who asks is to follow the below:

Contact Adrian Flux. Give them all your details and get a quote - I would not recommend taking a policy out with Flux due to the level of complaints I have seen/heard from people in the event of a claim. But, this is just hearsay really, so it's up to you if you choose to insure with them.

Ring Sky Insurance, give them all your details and the quote you got from Flux, they will, most of the time, beat it.

Ring GreenLight Insurance (our Insurance partner), give them your details, give them your cheapest quote, and then tell them you are a member of ElgrandOC to get your 15% discount. If they cannot beat the quote from Sky, go with them.

There are a lot of members who are more than happy, or have had their best quotes from some of the normal, big name insurance companies such as Direct Line, Admiral, Aviva etc. So if you really want to get a comparison across the board, ring some known insurance companies too and see if they can be competitive or not. But I would advise you ring the three Jap Import Specialist insurers listed above first, and then go to the big known insurance companies.

There is a whole different routine you will have to take to insure a FRESH IMPORT that has NOT BEEN REGISTERED. You need to insure on the Chassis number etc, and things are more complicated overall... so if you are looking at insuring an Elgrand off the boat to get in home for MOT etc, then please check in the "Import Experiences" forum section to see what others have done.

Hope this helps.

Fantastic stuff, Karl! Thanks very much for the effort you put into helping us with that.

Got a quote through direct line £253.12, will be happy with that
That's good. I just got my renewal quote from direct line and they want just shy of £600 with 10 years ncb! Am currently shopping around!

Definitely need to shop around, different companies are great for some, crap for others. My 2 cars are with Quotemehappy and Admiral didn't come close with the Ellie.

I got quoted £917, £660...alsorts of wacky quotes but then found Aviva for £350 ish (my brand new Mini Countryman Cooper S was £260 with them just to give a comparison) so it was more despite being 10 years old and less than half the price of the mini and it was a slightly higher compulsory excess but a pretty good quote compared to the initial ones! 😊 ...yep I traded the Countryman for the Ellie!!

Don't discount comparison sites completely. I thought I'd try compare the meerkat and got a quote for£246 fully comp. Adrian Flux quoted £450. Like most things it pays to shop around.

Hi Karl.

I tried Sky today. They told me they “generally struggle” with Elgrands. They went away and did a quote, then came back and said my £900 from Adrian Flux was a bargain. (46 year old, 9 years no claims bonus)

Like people have said before must be down to Postcode areas.
52 with 9 years no claims.

They just quoted me £385 which was the best quote by far that I've had. Not sure why they said they struggle with them. Really does seem to be pot luck.

Oh dear :joy::joy::joy:

I tried all the Jap specialists & the best quote I got was £450, used moneysupermarket comparison site & got my best quote off LV= which was £302 so the Jap specialists aren't always the best for everyone, why there is so much difference sometimes is beyond me, I know post codes, age, ncb etc plays its part but like for like & there can be as much as £600 variance

I know what you mean @wizball. It seems that Person A can get a great deal from the same 2/3 companies, but person B get's shit quotes from them. But adversely, person B gets great deals from the companies that person A gets shafted by.

It really does seem to be pot luck, and almost makes the question of "recommend me an insurer" obsolete. Seems you just need to find the best one for you... and what's best for you might be worst for someone else, even if the details are very similar.

After shopping around a bit I have gone with greenlight as the comparison sites were anywhere between £600 and £1200! My renewal with direct line was just shy of £600 and green light have offered annual premium at £409. I have opted to pay monthly as it's due on 23rd December (bad move many years ago when car died and had to replace in a hurry!) and that will cost me a total of £450, £100 deposit paid and 9 instalments at £39 per month. A saving of £150 is welcome and is a similar price to what I was paying on a 2012 Toyota 1.3 verso-s before buying the Ellie. Direct line did stitch me up when I bought the Ellie as they charged me a lot more than they had quoted for the change of vehicle which is why I decided to look elsewhere. Glad I did now. Thanks for your input guys and gals.
