Rest Of World Timing chains and sprockets replacement

Mine used more fuel than my other Elgrand and now I am currently replacing the timing chain due to a broken secondary timing chain tensioner.
Hi - if you don’t mind what sort of noise did the broken tensioner make? I have a whirring coming from my engine in sync with revs

Wasn't a whirring noise on mine bud much more of a clanging noise with the chain slapping around!!
I have a few videos on my thread that might possibly help, have you checked the belts or the crankshaft pulley? On my white one the crankshaft pulley made a whirring noise and that was down to the harmonica crankshaft pulley. Good luck!

Thanks - I haven’t checked anything tbh - I’m not even a part time mechanic. Problem is directing the garage to the possible cause!! Main concern for me is understanding which of these potential causes is an engine out job =£’s

Do you have any tips on locating the sound origin?

If you think its coming from the engine bay then you can put a solid bar (minding fans etc) in various places and your ear to the other end like a stethoscope. I'd use a socket extension but can't just think of an alternative you might have round the house.

I saw your other post but can't remember if the garage had already looked? If not they may recognise the sound or locate it if not. Could be worth an initial consultation for them to diagnose and then look into options depending on the problem.

Thanks. I’m hoping to get it to a specialist in December sometime. Just struggling to find people. My usual garage aren’t interested as they don’t have experience with these vans. They’ll do the basics but not this.

I don't know why garages take this approach, they aren't any different than any other car and the majority of parts are available from motor factors. I guess they don't want the hassle of someones van hanging about if there is a delay in parts.

Fingers crossed you get sorted and its something simple, in the meantime upload a video or sound clip if you can.

I think a lot of mechanics these days refuse to do much digging into any engine, they'll change cambelts etc but stop well short of getting involved with identifying and sorting internal faults, some would rather fit a replacement engine.

They wanted to take the whole engine out just to do the rocker covers… when I said it can be done without that they just said they wouldn’t have time to accommodate it.

Here you go. Also posted on another thread. May need to turn volume up!

Hello Jeramias, I didn't, then at 150K, it didn't have the power to pull up Balmoral Ridge range, plus the fuel economy went to dishonorable lows. I had the timing chains and sprockets replaced, and it gets up the range without problem. So perhaps the answer is no to being required to change them at 100k, you will likely have steady decrease in performance and economy. I am told that when the chains get sloppy, engine damage can occur. The whole job cost me around $1400, plus I purchased the kit with chains sprockets, tensioners etc...
ebay timing chain set kit
I had a Commodore VZ that developed the same timing chain issue, but the engine got trashed. So changing them seems advisable. The improvement in economy will help pay the bill, and daughter gets to use the handicap seat lift, instead of the Phil-Lift....Phil
Bugger.
I assumed that a timing chain meant no maintenance.
Shit.
That probably explains why all the Elgrand up for sale in my area are at around 150,000kms on the odometer.
I'm just south of the goldcoast in Chinderah NSW.
Do you have a local mechanic to recommend taking my Elgrand to?
