Hi Vish, welcome to the club.

Which system you chose is going to be a personal preference. You can get cheaper models by brands such as Xtrons, which will give you every feature you want, but may be lacking in performance. Or you can go for a branded unit that will give you less features that you pay over the odds for.
It's best to do some research on these to find the unit you want that meets your needs.
I've got a Pioneer unit in mine which is pretty awful to be honest, but I paid top dollar for it. Some of the cheaper units seem to be much better especially for the money, it's just going to be personal preference.

As for fitting, if you look in the how to section of the forum, there is a brilliant guide that was put together by @mattd that has helped loads of people to install a new stereo in their E51.

Hope this helps.

Agree with Karl here also. I had the dealer option Xtrons fitted in to mine which replaced all the Jap stuff already in there which was no good to me.

My selling UK Elgrand dealer offered me this option for £550 all in and fitted. What do I now have for my money,

1. Satnav which works great and is full UK and European maps
2. Cd, Radio and DVD options plus all other add on options you get with modern stuff
3. All 3 of my screens linked and working when playing a DVD which is what I wanted
4. Blue tooth phone connection

Its all touch screen too albeit sadly he could NOT re-connect the steering wheel volume controls back up nor the rear floor mounted subwoofer unit.

I have taken advice on these 2 points though from a specialist car audio installer in Swindon who knows the Elgrand model well and he said " DONT BOTHER " its too complicated and can mess up the cars " canbus " system.

So for now I am more than happy with what I have and it serves me well.

There's a good 'how to' somewhere on the forum about connecting the steering wheel controls (SWC) and I remember following it without difficulty.

As for whether the SWC and sub woofer are part of the CANBUS system - I'm fairly confident that that is not the case, although I'm happy to be corrected.

Edit - here's the SWC link

Cheers Alan but my selling dealer did say he could NOT connect them to work on the Xtron unit I now have fitted??

One for how to get the sub going as well some where :grinning: trouble is they take more than the usual 5 min plug an play radio install
@Vish all i can say is set your self a budget and the features you want you can pick up some bargains if you go with Yester years models with the branded stuff as for the chinese headunits im yet to be convinced they offer lot of functions for the money but i tend to think of them as a Alan sugar special on the sound output stage

You can also pick up the oem dual zone E51 SOUND function if you buy the right head unit aswell as the usual video research is key

Fair enough @Brendan1969 - I guess not all head units have the appropriate connection points for the Elgrand SWC - something else for @Vish to take into consideration
Yeah its a shame Alan but I can live with it TBH. One of the brother owners of WRM where I bought mine from ( Del ) is an auto sparky wizard and he has spent a few years trying to work out the most suitable and safest way and best way regarding Elgrand audio systems and after market fitment systems. He said they personally found the Xtron unit I now have to be one of the most suitable units out there for the price and with its functions it has which is why they offer it specifically.

I am pretty sure though some bright spark has already worked it all out though. maybe I will get Chris Wills to look at mine to see if he can connect the steering wheel controls for me and maybe the rear sub box and also one of those D1 throttle controllers too seeing as he is quite close to me.

As a (long) retired military electronics and radio engineer, I would not expect full UK DAB radio coverage (good for urban and near urban areas but not so good cross country) and even less coverage for TV, irrespective of make/model of head unit (although some will be better than others).

Anecdotally (from forum members), the Xtrons appears to give better radio reception than say the Pumpkin range.
