Well, having no end of bother with the carPC, looks like a motherboard fault :( (stupid ASUS chassis intrusion detection)

Not sure if I should bin the whole PC thing and just get a normal double din headunit?

Next is to build my sub box. I'm using 2 x JBL GTO804 subs, these are dinky little things that pack a decent wallop and all from a tiny 0.3 cubic foot box :)

I was looking at a tablet install initially but tablets are far too limited for what I want due to lack of ports (only one micro USB)

Shame as the screens are top quality and capacitive touch and an android operating system is perfect for in car use..

I think as I'm quite invested now in the carPC route I'll source another motherboard and have a final attempt at getting it to work

Little update, just started on this as I need a little bass in my life...

I wanted something as small as possible to keep the living space a decent size so went for a couple of 8in JBL GTO804 subs.

These pack a real punch for their size and only need a 0.3 cft enclosure...

This box allows me to have the seats all the way back and also flat down in bed mode...

The center section of the box has a hinged lid for storage...

Hopefully get it finished this weekend, trimmed in same white leather and interior of trunk carpeted and leds fitted...

I had a nightmare with my first Asus board as there was a chassis intrusion fault.

New motherboard solved that...

Currently running Windows 10 and I'm having trouble getting a decent front end. I bought centra fuse and that does the job of media etc...

I may revert to an old version of Windows, XP maybe and see if i can resurrect some of the old front ends like roadrunner...

Audio wise, it's great :) 8 channel HD audio with endless software equalisers etc...

Sounds great, you got that running through the touchscreen in the front?

I've got a Raspberry Pi 2 here which would be great size wise but i reckon it would be massively under-powered and slow (not tried their windows 10 OS but it's slow enough with their Raspbian OS). What processor and RAM are you running?

I also have a raspberry pi2 as that was the original plan but I wasn't happy with the 2ch audio...

Great thing about the pi though is you could run an android distro and there's loads of stuff out there designed just for car multimedia...

If you're handy with the pi then it would be a much better option from a software point of view.

The pi2 would be quick enough for music/video playback but the latest offering would be the way to go.

Yeah my PC is hooked up to an 8in touchscreen in the dash and a 15in touchscreen in the rear...

Can't remember the exact pc specs off the top of my head but it's something like an amd quad core 3000, 4gb ram and 128gb ssd. .. Video is handled on board along with the 8ch audio. More than quick enough for what I need it for.

I did try some android emulators but they were all laggy and required lots of workarounds to act like a proper android machine.... Plus the boot up time for Windows then the emulator was getting silly

Yea the distro's available for the Pi's nowadays are huge, that was one of the reasons i had thought about it. The Pi 3 (which was the latest last time i looked) looks pretty good, on-board WiFi etc. I may try installing one of the android distro's on my Pi 2 first and see how it goes, gives far more options for expansion as opposed to the likes of the pumpkin head units and far easier to custom install software. hmmmm, i'm getting into this now lol, feeling the old spark for this idea coming back, off to look at touch screen prices now and do some research. I'm sure i seen a write up somewhere recently for using the GPIO pins as audio output to an amp for more than 2 channel sound.

@clocky280 I'm relatively old school aswell buddy but love my techie gadgety stuff, had looked at trying to install a computer in a car years ago but the hardware didnt come small enough in those days, now tho there are endless possibilities.

@Madfish Just having a quick look concerning the audio output side there, folks on the Pi forum talking about extracting the audio from the hdmi output which would give 5.1 output, can buy a cable to do this which also has pass through and still gives audio to any device you plug the hdmi into, sounds like this could be a way forward :)
