E51 New Double Din sterio advice - X-Trons Unit - TE103AP

#1
Hi all, I'm looking at upgrading my sterio, has any one fitted and used a X-Trons Unit - TE103AP - Android 8, 4GB Ram, Octa-Core. Looks like it has all the features I want, SATNAV, SPOTIFY, BLUE TOOTH and Speaker for calls but I hear that some units are too big to fit, or are a real struggle? Also If I buy the unit, what else would I need to buy? I know theres a Micra adaptor but what about the ariel? Are their any good DAB ariels anyone would recommend? Or ariel adaptors for FM radio. This will be my first radio fit so any advice would be great.
Thanks in advance

There is a whole thread on how to fit in the "how to section" which goes through all the ins and outs.

Yes there is an FM aerial adatper. These aerials are amplified, and as such need a power source, so if you just plug it in, you'll never get reception. You need the adapter that allows the power feed as well as the aerial plug.

The unit will be fine as long as it's double din. There is loads of room in the dash to fit one.

The only bad thing I've heard about the xtrons units is the sound quality isn't as good as more popular branded units, and also there are issues with the bluetooth connectivity.

As there are sooooo many units out there, you're best off searching for user reviews of particular head units, and if you are lucky enough you may get a techy website review of the unit you are looking at as well.

Try to keep away from any xtrons related websites as obviously the reviews will be biased.

Just be beware that that particular model has a 10 inch screen so it sticks out, over the fascia. The unit itself will fit as its a double din - just need to make sure the screen doesn't get in the way of the gear stick. I'm currently fitting an xtrons 6.95 inch model. You need to also check whether you have the Bose speaker system, as if you do you will need additional adaptors to make them work with the new head unit.

How do you know if you have the Bose speaker system?

wat series is your elgrand? I maybe wrong but i think the Bose system was introduced for S2 E51 as an option. I have a large speaker under the windscreen, 2 speakers next to the side mirrors all labled Bose, and also there will be an Bose Amp under passenger seat possibly. . These posts may help you further to see if you do have Bose speakers installed:-

Have been looking at this unit myself, liked the idea of the 10" screen and the octacore processor with 4gb ram sounds capable enough of running most apps smoothly both now and the near future. Wasn't sure myself how it would sit in the dash tho with the bigger screen, if it would interfear with the gearstick or cover any of the other buttons above (or be close enough to make it more of a hassle to get to them). Also try having a look at pumpkin head units (think there the same units but rebranded?), they also have the same spec of processor and ram available with the 7" screen (so normal double din size). Will be interested to see how you get on if you go for the 10" as to how it fits and looks.

Would anyone with the double din fascia be able to show measurements from the edge of the double din apature to the gearstick and also buttons above the stereo please? This might make it easier to work out if it would fit OK.

Just measured mine @DAMEscort at the Double Din aperture is 7 inches wide by 4.2 inches give or take high if this helps! :)

It was more from the edges of the apature to the surrounding equipment buddy to see how the 10" screen would fit (ie would the gearstick hit off it when you try and put in into semi auto). I've not got a double din fascia in mine yet so can't measure it myself. Thanks.

An old member that has recently sold his Elgrand @Derek had a 10" stereo if I remember rightly, heres some pics I found @DAMEscort :

 brilliant @Richard Fox thank you muchly, didn't even think of searching as I'd never heard anyone else having had one fitted lol. That looks massive and un-natural, think I'd stick with the 7" in dash unit. Can see from the photo that it would interfere with the gearstick aswell which would be a no go for me (even though I seldom use the semi auto, but still).

Yeah I think the 7" one is the one to go for, the 10" looks quite odd. So any recommendations for a 7" stereo. Pumpkin seem to do a good selection. Will start investigating..... I've got a feeling I don't have a Bose system, but will check later.

@Mark155 My thinking on it was to go for the best spec one in terms of processor and Ram, thinking of it like your mobile phone, their constantly updating software etc and even the higher end models can start to seem to slow down a bit after a year or so, therefore getting the most powerful currently available running Android 8 should last a bit longer. There are loads of add ons available aswell, tyre pressure sensors, diagnostics etc etc some sites you'll find will add these kind of things as part of a package which can save you if your thinking about adding these features in the future.

Really depends on what your looking for in a system and what you'll be wanting to run on it.

I have fitted one of those to my E50. I'm not a premium member and don't have a photo hosting account anywhere so I cant attach a picture but I can tell you that it looks fine in my motor and the big screen is so much better than the smaller version i had in my last elgrand. Yes it does obscure the heater controls a little but you can tilt the screen out the way easily enough to operate those.

The only problem with it is the access to the DVD player. Even with the screen fully tilted back its a fiddly ball ache to slot a disc in. Really though its more about the streaming media (Terrarium is very good hooked up to 4g mobile) and the micro SD card slot takes all the media you can throw at it. It makes and takes calls over bluetooth well and I havent had any problems with bluetooth unlike every other bluetooth device I have ever tried to use. You can miracast your phones screen and it connects to your phone using direct usb, wireless network or bluetooth. I am not sure why you would want to emulate your phone sreen on its screen as the android system is better than the one on my phone. Actually I have one other criticism and that is the buttons are not backlit so you cant see the volume at night. I got around this by glueing a small fishing beta light next to the volume keys.
