Thought I'd start a thread to keep track of my post import / registration progress with my 'new' 2002 Highway Star. Initially I have no real plans to mod the car just overhaul it and get it nice and useable.

The first things added were the rear fog light and uk towbar electrics. These were done by a local garage as they were putting it through MOT.

Fog light & UK spec towing electric socket fitted by -BitchinRob ( http://MrRob.in )-

It needed front arm rear bushes replacing for MOT so Powerflex items were purchased from @BMR. I was persuaded by the mechanic not to do all the other bushes at the same time ... something I now regret as there are plenty of rattles as we drive country lanes at 20-30 mph.

While I was waiting for the registration to come through I took the van apart to fix the one issue I knew it had from the auction report... a missing nav/DVD unit and non working aftermarket digi tv.

DVD Drive module is missing by -BitchinRob ( http://MrRob.in )-

ElgrandUK on eBay provided the nav drive for £40 and I ordered a Bluetooth/ memory card module to plug into the headunit cd changer port in case I couldn't work out the line in on the oe system.

Thankfully the new nav unit worked great and the oe line in only took about 4 hours button pressing to work out. The Bluetooth module won't seem to register as a source on the headunit...

The car looked like this when the registration came through...

First ride out in the car and it became apparent that something was very wrong with the suspension. The car rides fine on ultra smooth surfaces but bumps crash and undulations launch the car into the air.

So I get the jack out to have a look see what's going on underneath and discover some HKS coilover adjusters. Thankfully my first thought was 'ah ... coilovers have been removed before sale' rather than think they were there ...

Because I might have been even more disappointed to find ...

Bump stop less rear coils

And salvaged dampers?

Well there really is no money left to re-fit even cheap coilovers so the choice is between airbags or refit the oe bump stops as see how the ride is even though these springs seem very soft.

But the more I look at he car the more I like it with the car running very low at the rear so oe springs and bumpstops or HD springs are out for now and I'm going to try Murano Air Lift airbags in the existing coils to see how it rides. For £100 (Amazon.com) they seem like a good way to vary ride height and spring rate and perhaps allow me to save for some cheap coilovers.
They just push into the rear coils so there are no fitting costs either as I can DIY this ;)

The front suspension rattles are hopefully simple bushes and / or drop links but I'll get the car to my 'trusted mechanic' to sort them and the major service items ...

@MrRob_in , please excuse my questions when you're obviously busy with the new HWS but:

a. why were you re-fitting the Nav/DVD unit?
b.
Bluetooth/ memory card module to plug into the headunit cd changer port
- can you elaborate on this adaptation please as I'm keen to understand what you're upto:nerd:
c.
and the oe line in only took about 4 hours button pressing to work out
- again, can you elaborate on where to find the 'line in' and what you will be doing with it?

I ask this as although I'm busy with my camper conversion at the moment, I've yet to look at the AV/ICE side yet but will be doing so in due course.

Many thanks,

Simple answer is nav/DVD unit was missing.

And I put a new headunit in the last one so had no idea how to switch to rear AV Aux in source via TV button and on screen menus on the standard system ;)

Oh sorry, video line in / audio phono / rca plugs should be in rear second row right panel next to inverter 100v ac supply. It feeds via tv tuner to nav unit to screens & headunit...

Though I found mine in driver underfloor cubby with aftermarket digi tv module;)

Ah right, @MrRob_in, thanks for that -
I've got a Bluetooth dongle plugged into the aux in now.
. By AUX IN, do you mean the White and Red RCA connectors by the mid seat, or is there another input somewhere?

What sort of dongle are we talking about please?

I have the rear RCA connectors extended out into the rear wardrobe of my camper conversion waiting for me to do something with. (my first idea is to feed bumper camera video in via his cable - but that's for a later project)

Yep that right My Bluetooth thing is

Kinivo BTC455 Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit for Cars with Aux Input Jack (3.5 mm) - Supports aptX and Multi-point Connectivity
Using it would leave video free for whatever ntsc feed you want to watch but you'll need a parking brake override to see it in front screen when driving. Luckily mine had one fitted for the aftermarket tv.

As a side note, if you ever get rid of the HKS suspension could I purchase your spanners please? :)

The HKS Coilovers and rear coils and dampers were removed before it got to me
So if I have no need for the spanners (ie the airbags and bump stops work to my liking and I don't have to run the gauntlet of persuading my wife she needs new suspension for my car for her birthday) then you can have them. Give me a nudge if I forget in a couple of weeks.

Oh yes there has already been a slight change of plan because I've been advised the missing bumpstops are 'an issue at MOT' and tbh after seeing how big the rubber bumper / cushion is I will be re-fitting them and the airbags so rear end will gain at least a couple of inches in height even before the bags are inflated (which will now likely be only for towing).

Are you gonna use it to tow rob cos I think it's the added weight of your towbar that's causing the car to sit so low....... I can be very kind and help you out by removing said towbar and taking the problem away from ya if you like.

Son has caravan/ games room/man cave that I have to haul off septic tank to empty it*. Obviously I'd never venture onto a public highway with a trailer...

Hi Rob - I want to take out the cigarette lighter & cup holder drawer, spare drawer like you have in the last photo above.

What screws & clips & tips n tricks do I need to remove them.

Thanks

Phil.

I just took out the headunit and worked my way down, there is a 'how to' somewhere on here.

In essence just pull out the top row of buttons and unscrew underneath above cig lighter socket after pulling trim there too. Then it's quite obvious from there.

I took photos as I went to remind is screw & plug connections and worked slowly.

The only clips to break were the ones holding the lower trim panel in place at bottom in each footwell.

Just got the car back from my mechanic with most of the outstanding jobs done including full engine and drive train oil change, front drop links and rear bumpstops and airbags fitted.

The Murano items fit perfectly without having to trim the oe rubber cones on the bumpstops so would be a very easy driveway install with just one side at a time meeting to be jacked up to push the bags into the coil.

At max psi of 35 they only just come into contact with the oe bumpstops.

E51 Elgrand rear suspension by -BitchinRob ( http://MrRob.in )-

And unlike some other install I've seen don't jack the rear up too high at full pressure.

I've only driven it directly home but ride is great at 35psi and handling seems good too. I'll update further after I've had a play with various pressures.
